The Pontics have been keeping me in constant siege for the last 30 years. I've held the walls every single time thanks to the amazing hoplites. I have finally taken Halicarnassus, and are now at last arriving with two relief forces, destined to defeat the brute fist that is The Pontics. Glory and Valour for Greece herself!

The 300 were the bodyguards of King Leonidas who were only soldiers Sparta was able to provide for the Battle of Thermopylae as the rest of the Spartan Army was at home celebrating a very important religious holiday. The Spartans were part of a larger collation of Greek Cities with the army at Thermoyplae numbered 7,000 by modern estimates. The Greeks for two days successfully held back the much larger Persian Army which according to modern estimates numbered 120,000 to 300,000, largely due to the Greeks used the narrowness of the Pass of Thermoplaye to prevent the Persians using their advantage of numbers. The Greek combination of using the Phalanx, having heavier armour and weapons than most of the Persian forces and rotating the units of the phalanx meant that the Greeks were able inflict huge casualties on the Persian whilst suffering very few in return, even the Immortals who were Persian King's own contingent of elite soldiers and bodyguards failed to breakthrough. However a traitor Ephialtes of Trachis informed the Persian King of a goat trail that bypassed the Pass of Thermoplaye. Ephialtes then guided a 20000 strong force including what was left of the Immortals through the trail that went over the mountain south of the Pass of ther Thermoplaye and forced the contingent of Phocians which the Greeks had sent to guard the trail, to retreat down a branching path that lead to Phocis. The Phocians were able to send a runner warning the Greeks that the Phocians failed to hold the trail and the Greek Army was now in danger of being encircled. The Greek Army retreated before the encircling Persian force arrived however King Leonidas and 300 Spartan plus the contingents of 400 Thebans and 700 Thespians and what ever helot servants the Spartans brought with them stayed behind to form a rearguard delaying the Persians for the rest of the Greek forces to safely escape the encirclement.

I have been working on a reworked roster for the Greek City states. One of the biggest changes is that Hoplites are no longer pike units but spearmen with a shield wall ability which better represents the classical greek phalanx rather than the pikemen phalanx of the macedonians. Also most hoplites will be losing their sword secondaries so they will become pure spearmen. I will be dividing them into 6 categories which will be Infantry, Missile, Cavalry, Siege, Mercenaries and Regional Units. Note regional units are units that can only be recruited in certain locations, Spartain Hoplites will be in this category. The greeks like the other Hellenic factions should have their own reforms similar to the romans which allows new types of units to be recruited
    *Infantry*
Milita Hoplites: They will be given a slight boost to their melee stats and more importantly their morale so they can hold the line a little longer than previously. Also they will be wearing tunics instead of going out barechested. They will loose the spear wall ability for a shield wall ability.
Hoplites: They will given a boost to their attack to make up the lost of the spear wall ability. A solid defensive unit that will take a long time to dislodge from the front and their shields will protect from missile fire. They will break if they get attacked from the flanks or rear by shock cavalry and armour piercing units.
Light Hoplites: These are hoplites that have shed their armour for greater mobility. They still can form the shield wall. They are fast moving for infantry and have very good stamina. Use these to defend the flanks from cavalry
Reformed Hoplites: These are units that will not be recruitable until the first hellenic reform event. These Hoplites are less heavily armoured than the classical hoplites and they have replaced their round Hoplon shields for thureos shields. This allows them to be more mobile than classical hoplites while still being well protected. They are also armed with sword side arms so they can better defend against flanking infantry. They have good stamina and fast infantry speed (those slightly slower than light hoplites) and can still form the shield wall
Chosen Hoplites: These are very strong hoplites that are very well protected, very good melee stats and have very good morale however they are vastly more expensive and have fewer troops than normal Hoplites
Thuerophoroi: These are a highly versatile unit that can only be recruited after the first hellenic reform. They are practically roman legionaries but with spears instead of swords. Having good melee combat ability and decent armoured allows them to adequately form a frontline. They have good stamina and fast speed, coupled with a bonus against cavalry allows them to be great screens for the flanks. They have javelins which allows them to skirmish. However their greatest weakness is while they can do almost anything they are less effective in each role than specalised units.
Thorakitai: These units are recruitable after the second and final hellenic reform. They are similar to Theurophoroi being a legionary like unit armed with spears but they have heavier armour than Thuerophoroi which means they sacrfice the ability at being flank screeners for great ability at being shock infantry. They have better melee stats and armour protection than Theurophoroi but more importantly they have a decent charge bonus for an infantry unit.
Machairophoroi: These units are recruitable after the second hellenic reform. They are even more like the roman legionaries than Theurophoroi and Thorakitai as they are armed with swords. They are comparable to the Roman Principies.
Greek Pikemen: Recruitable after the second hellenic reform. These are pikemen that are slightly inferior to the Pezhetairoi pikemen of the other hellenic factions
Greek General's Bodyguard: Greek General are unquie instead of being mounted on horseback they fight on foot as hoplites protected by small unit of chosen elite elite hoplites. They are stronger in sustained combat than other Bodyguard but due to being on foot they would not be able escape easily if the fight goes bad.
    *Missile*
Hellenic Skirmishers: These are very cheap and low tier skirimisher with very low morale and poor melee stats but good throwing damage. Shared
Hellenic Slingers: These are deceivingly good units being cheap and low morale and melee but they have a good range damage and are able to out range most archer units. Shared with other hellenic factions
Hellenic Archers: These are the worst archers in the game. Low range for archers, poor damage, terrible morale and melee. Shared with all other hellenic factions.
Peltasts: These are a lightly armoured skirimisher unit with good throwing ability and decent melee ability
Heavy Peltast: These are Peltasts that have adopted better armour and have stronger melee ability
    *Cavalry*
Hellenic Skirmisher Cavalry: These are highly mobile harrasement units. While they do have armour piercing melee swords they will not last long in melee due to poor armour and defense stats
Hellenistic Medium Cavalry: These are rather mediocre cavarly. Fairly fast with a decent charge and melee combat, good for chasing away skirmishers, archers and light infantry away from the battle lines and can battle, hold their own at melee with their swords and perform quick flanking attacks. They can also be used to lure heavy cavalry or cavalry generals wit their speed.
However keep them from battling heavy cavalry or spearmen.
    *Mercenaries*
Mercenary Pikemen: These are pikemen who decided to become soldiers for hire
Thracian Lancers: These are very effective medium cavalry with very good carge and a good melee ability
Thracian Peltasts: These are the best skirmisher infantry unit. Well-armored, fast, high morale and equipped with a good shield, multiple javelins and armor-piercing sicas. These men are quite capable at devastating enemy units in range or in melee combat and are also fast enough to perform flank attacks from behind enemy lines.
Thracian Rompaianai: Terrifyingly effective shock infantry armed with devastatingly effective romphaias. Once they charge into the sides of a tied down enemy unit they will just absolutely slaughter the enemy. Even heavily armoured infantry will not last long from any flanking assault from these warriors. Thracian Rompaianai greatest weakness is the lack of shield and fairely light armour which means they will melt under missle fire
    *Siege Equipment*
Katapeltai: These are basically the base game ballista but they can not move. They do great range damage against enemy units but fairly slow firing. They will do light damage against enemy buildings.
Lithoboloi: These replace onagers. These are large ballista that throw stone projectiles instead of bolts and are more accurate than onagers
Heavy Lithoboloi: These are giant ballistas that throw very heavy bolders with good accuracy. They will make short work of enemy fortifications
    *Regional Units*
Spartan Hoplites: These are Elite Hoplites that sacrfice some of their armour for greater morale and far better stamina. Recruitable only at high level barracks in Sparta.
Massilan Hoplites: These are Hoplites that are armed with a secondary sword. Recruitable only Massila but fortunately do not need any reforms. You will need to conquer Massila to get these.
Creatan Archers: One of the best archers in the game with very long range and good range dame. Also they have decent melee stats and adequate armour. Recruitable only from Crete though they can be hired as mercenaries though these are rare.
Rhodian Slingers: Best slingers in the game, have very long range, good damage and armour piercing missiles. Recruitable only from Rhodes and as rare mercenaries
Thessalian Cavalry: The best cavalry unit that can be recruited by the Greeks. These good heavy cavalry capable of destroying both light and medium cavalry in melee combat as well as unleashing a crushing charge towards the enemy. They are recruitable only in the Thessalian plains (i do not know the name of the city in Thessaly) which means if you will have to take it from Macedon
Tarantine Cavalry: These are excellent skirmisher cavalry capable of throwing high damaging javalein at good distance while having the speed to avoid pursers. Due to being well-armored and well-armed for skirmisher cavalry, they are able to defeat and pursue missile units and defeat light cavalry but they cannot defeat medium or heavy cavalry by themselves. To recruit these you need to capture southern Italy from the Romans.

How did you give them the shield wall ability? I’ve only ever managed to change their unit animations with a shorter spear but when they get into melee they push and become a mess. Nice roster though, it reminds me of the extended Greek mod roster

@@alexanderthegreat1356 I think it might be possible to port some of the Barbarian invasion coding for the sheild wall ability. I am not a modder I am just somebody who is coming up with ideas that I hope somebody would pick up and try to implement. To make the shield wall tighter it would be a good idea to use guard stance

    • @volodymyrboitchouk
      @volodymyrboitchouk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@RocketHarry865 a bit late, but I have some suggestions based upon my knowledge of greek history, particularly the peloponnesian war. The Greek cities had already begone diversifying their armies during this period and that innovation continued until their final conquest by the Roman's.
Peltasts should become an increasingly more important element of Greek armies over time. Originally created to fight as marines these light troops were later moved in land as skirmishers and flankers. Cavalry should also become more varied and significant with time. Here are my ideas for units in each reform level: (a note up front, when I write "melee defense" i mean defense skill as opposed to shield defense and armor defense.
Militia units: lowest tier units but with higher morale than most equivalent units and a combat bonus in friendly territory and/or when defending cities depending upon ease of implementation and ballance. Higher cost and upkeep but with with reduced upkeep when garrisoned in cities.
      Militia hoplite:
Troops with similar armor and shield values to roman hastati as well as a hoplite phalanx/shield wall ability. They have higher defense than hastati but lower attack, speed and no javelins.
Militia Peltast: basically an unarmored and cheap javelin unit. Average morale, no armor, decent shield, dagger for melee and average ammunition. A bit pricier than equivalent javelin skirmishers from other factions but has higher morale and a better shield, meaning it will stick around longer.
Militia toxote: basically low tier archers, slightly better armor and morale but lower missile attack than equivalent units.
Cavalry militia: light cavalry equipped with spears. Effective at flanking and running down skirmishers and fleeing enemies or unbraced enemies out of formation. Low armor and no shield make them vulnerable to sustained skirmish fire. Average charge with poor melee stats but decent morale. Dont expect them to do more than delay enemy cavalry if it comes down to it.
      Now come the regular army:
Hoplite: one of the cheapest true heavy infantry in the game. Higher armor and morale than the militia hoplite and a similar shield. Same shield wall ability with higher defense than any other equivalent unit but only low to average attack. They wont kill fast but they will hold for a long time.
Peltast: similar to the militia peltast but with better armor, melee defense, morale, and missile and melee attack. Because they use the classic greek broad sword they have a bonus against armor in melee but dont have very good attack. With one more missile attack than militia peltasts these troops make a great screening force and flankers. Like all javelins their ranged attack has a bonus against large and a bonus against armor so they can ward of cavalry fairly well early on. While the melee stats are not great, they can hold up for a bit against most light infantry. Come in regular infantry unit sizes.
Greek cavalry: poor medium cavalry unit made up of greek aristocrats. The best thing about them is their morale but otherwise they have bellow average melee stats and an average charge. Their armor is ok as well, but they are slower than most medium cavalry. Overpriced like most greek cavalry.
Aristoi: aristocratic wariors who have forgone horses in combat. These are an elite super heavy infantry unit. Same excelent shield as all other hoplite with slightly better melee attack and melee defense than the regular hoplite. Where they really stand out is in their armor and morale, which are very high even compared to other elite units later in the game. Excelent defensive infantry but expensive.
Mounted Aristoi: among the wealthiest Greek aristocrats and oligarch who can afford good warhorses and armor. Average charge, morale and armor for its class. But like all Greek cavalry it suffers from bellow average melee attack and melee defense. Overpriced, but it's on a horse.
First reforms, better skirmishers and medium infantry:
Light peltast: like the peltast but with less armor in return for higher speed and more ammunition as well as 1 more missile attack. These are a dedicated skirmisher and while their melee defense, melee attack and shield values are the same as the regular peltast, the lower armor means they will melt in melee combat. Skirmisher unit size so fewer units than the peltast as well.
Heavy peltast: has the same stats and unit size (same as most infantry) as the regular peltast except they have much better armor. This comes at the expense of slightly less ammo. This unit is effectively equivalent to a principes but trading melee stats for slightly more ammunition.
Toxotes: regular archers with some armor and a small shield on their arm. Missile attack remains, reload speed and range remains like the militia toxotes, but armor and melee attack are higher. Having a small shield also makes them more resistant to enemy skirmishers. This is a heavy skirmisher intended to counter enemy skirmishers.
Light hoplites: same basic stats as the hoplite but with the armor of a militia hoplite, faster moving than either and with one more charge than the hoplite. Either has the shield wall ability or, if it's possible to implement, has the ability to stow the shield. This causes the unit to lose its shield defense, which due to the lower armor means the unit is much more vulnerable (especially to ranged atracks). But in return the unit gets doubled charge and +50% melee attack and defense.
Xiphomachoi: medium sword infantry. Has the armor of a hoplite with the shield of a peltast. Slightly better melee attack and defense than peltasts with the same bonus against armor in melee but no javelins. Basically a heavy peltast with no javelins but slightly better attack and defense and slightly cheaper. Decent flanker and can help against heavy infantry.
Greek pikemen: a mid tier pike phalanx unit. Nothing to wrote home about. Has good morale and armor but lower melee attack. When switching to sword gets a bonus against armor.
Mounted peltast: learning from the example of tarrentum, the greeks have now taken to regularly employing mounted skirmishers. Basically the shield and armor of a peltast, slightly lower melee attack and defense but with much higher charge like all cavalry. Has slightly more javelins but lower missile attack by 1.
Second reform: keeping up with contemporaries, here is where we will see the first unit replacements.
Thorakismenoi Hoplites: hoplites with even more armor, slightly better melee attack and defense and morale. Slower moving but even tougher than the regular hoplites which they replace.
Thorakismenoi Xiphomachoi: just like the earlier xiphomachoi but slower moving and with heavier armor. Because of their high armor and armor piercing attacks these troops are intended to match legionaries in melee.
Thorakismenoi pikemen: replaces the greek pikemen. Moves slower but has higher armor.
Thorakismenoi Peltasts: same deal as the previous units. Replaces the heavy peltast and has better armor and morale at a slightly higher price. Is somewhat equivalent to early legionnaires.
Marines: replaces both the peltast and the light peltast. Armor is between that of a peltast and a light peltast. Has the missile attack, ammunition and movement speedof the light peltast and the melee attack and defense of the peltast. Same unit size as regular infantry. Costs only a little more than the peltast. Excelent light infantry/medium skirmished hybrid with deceptively high missile damage thanks to the large unit size.
Thoraksimenoi toxotes: replaces the toxotes. Moves slower but has higher armor. Trades the dagger for ab actual sword so gains slightly more melee defense and attack as well as a bonus against armor.
Hippeis: replaces the greek cavalry. Has better melee attack and defense, better charge, better morale.a prety average medium cavalry, slightlybetter armor and shield but slower moving than average. At least it's not substandard.
Hippeis lancers: medium lancer cavalry similar to the thessalonians cavalry. Slightly lower melee attack, melee defense, morale and speed. Same charge and slightly better armor and cost about the same.
Thorakismenoi aristoi: replaces the earlier aristoi. Has higher armor and a slightly higher charge. Costs only slightly more.
Hippeis toxotes: medium cavalry archer. Has bellow average speed, ranged attack and range compared to other medium cavalry archers. Comes with a small shield and above average armor. The weakest medium cavalry archer but more survivable than most.
Neo Spartiates: Sparta was nothing more than an insignificant village when the game starts. These elite troops are a resurrection of the spartan ideal with none of the horrific baggage. Made up of only the best greek wariors, these hoplites come in a slightly undersized unit (about 75% strength) but in return they have by far the highest melee attack, melee defense and charge of all hoplites. Move at the speed of regular hoplites despite having the armor of a thorakismenoi hoplite. Unbreakable morale, this unit will not retreat unless ordered to do so. Have lower attack but slightly higher defense than urban cohorts and cost more. Grants a morale and defense bonus to nearby friendly units. Have the cool red cloaks and the omega symbol on their shields.
Mercenaries remain the same except that some time after each reform mercenary units of that reform level will become availible.

Ik this is a couple years old now. But i just found your channel. I think the reason you might not find much of a battlefield use is the battle scale. At smaller scales the inaccuracy is more of an issue. When each unit is 160+ men, theres more to hit, so even if your bolt or big rock misses the intended unit, there's more other units to hit

This is one of my favorite factions to play in RTW. I love hoplites and once you get Armored hoplites and Spartans, you can basically launch a blitzkreg in Greece and Asia Minor as your army will be virtually unstoppable. These two units can stand up to almost every unit they go up against, even the post Marian Roman infantry such as the Legionary cohort and Urban cohort will have a difficult time. I usually wait for mu hoplites to put the enemy to flight then I launch my cavalry to finish the rout. The elephants of Carthage and the Seleucids may be problematic but if you have plenty of missile troops, you should be able to deal with them. Try not to attack the Italian peninsula until you get Armored hoplites and Spartans and have solidified your position on the Greek peninsula. The factions that have given me the most trouble in my experience are the Scippi and Brutti Romans, Macedon and Pontus.

I strategically blocked the 3 entrances into the town square with 3 phalanxes and the other 2 as reinforcement. The archers stood in the main square and fired fire arrows. Thus the enemy kept retreating and charging right into the phalanxes. I was not expecting to win at all, They had elite infantry and cavalry. But my hoplites performed a Leonidas and never let the enemy past the narrow passages. Then enemy routes. Win.

When a unit is completely surrounded, instead of fleeing, they will fight to the death (the same thing as what happens on walls). Note that the surrounding models have to be from at least two units. In one unit vs one unit fights the unit that gets routed will never fight to the death (except, of course, on walls).

Greek city states are the strongest overall faction with access to the best regions and access to these armies.
Armored hoplites are probably the best unit in the game when you factor in everything: you can start making them in a few turns by upgrading the building, they are some of the strongest units when used correctly (phalanx into the enemy), massive armor and good morale makes them reliable; it takes the Romans Marian reforms to catch up and narrowly exceed them, which is ridiculous.
If you really feel the need, you can get the second best archers in the game from Crete to put behind your formidable hoplites.
Spartans are NOT worth making over the armored hoplites unless you are looking for niche situations.

They really are amazing. They shut down other strategies that you might find irritating as other factions.
Archers? Haha, nope. Even the best archers in the game will do next to no damage.
Other phalanx units? Nope, yours are the best and will win any trading of blows. The only exception to this (sacred band) you will be able to VASTLY outnumber.
      Chariots? Get fucked Egypt.
Cataphracts? Not even they are that tough.
      It's great. They're so powerful.
Also, since they're so tough they are probably going to win you lots of battles and get lots of experience. Combine that with the temple of Nike and these guys can reach outrageously powerful levels.

I found that by attaching the Scipii in Messina with everything you can muster in the opening moves and getting your ships to sink Scipii reinforcements, their resources are so curtailed that they are effectively neutralised, then use the Sicilian based troops to take the Brutii’s home cities. This approach relieves pressure on the Peloponese Greeks so that they can concentrate on the Macedonians
In turn, Rhodes is a sturdy base to raise navies initially and good quality troops as the city develops
I’m also surprised by your lack of early investment in economic structures like farms and roads

I would have made Javelin throwers into short ranged but high damage and armour piercing units and also Hellenic factions can recruit a third type of Javelinners the Thureophoroi. They effectively function the same as Legionaries but instead of swords their main weapons are spears. They would have decent attack (7) and defense (14), good stamina and have bonus against cavalry. I would imagine them as a unit you want to keep close with your cavalry to eliminate cavalry sooner and then have them flank the enemy mainline . This would be especially useful for the Greek Cities as they have lackluster cavalry and they need every advantage against their neighbors such as Macedonia and Pontus on open plains they can get other wise the hoplites risk being outflanked.

Anyway fighting wars on all fronts. Recovered sparta from brutus but barely holding it bcuZ he threw everything at me. Caesar conquered Thrace and fighting me in the north.
The other tough part is fighting for control over Africa with scipio. This guy defends really well, and because he controls the sea too, it’s difficult to transport troops.

    • @MCorpReview
      @MCorpReview 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Lugotorix the game is really addictive. I managed to keep the riots down by monitoring public order. There’s still riots but manageable level, but the romans are really hard to beat man. Scipio took almost all of Egypt from me (I took his Sicily first), and heavy fighting in the euxine region (tanais areA) with brutus having the upper hand🙄 the romans seem to raise bigger armies than me and they control the sea lanes.
Only time I win is when we fight in forts or on bridges. Not sure how to proceed. Down from 38 to 34 cities but starting to lose.
Do u think it’s a good idea to play defense, wear them down, and then counterattack? Or will going on the defensive simply make the romans stronger because they just keep raising ever bigger armies.
The oracle of Delphi says Rome will prevail. Arghh! I managed to recapture Sparta but only held it for few turns bcuZ brutus kept attacking until i broke.

sorry lugotorix but i must dismiss your advice on the temples, i think you needed to work from the awesome temple rather than the pantheon. the pantheon is just an amalgamation of bonuses on top of the normal bonuses. the lower tier temples are more representitive of their respective gods' bonuses and you don't get the pantheon until the very last settlement tier so most of the time you'll work with the lower tier temples. also pantheon of hermes inceases trade MUCH MUCH more than the other pantheons, being the GO TO temple for peaceful trade-focused settlements, you skipped over the lower tier temples so you missed this fact(incease in trade amount varies from building to building but isn't shown, it's a limitation of the game).
this is something i noticed in many of your "civilized" faction overviews.

They are one of the best defensive faction because they have lots of phalanx units with great armor, but in an open battle they lack cavalry. Factions without good cavalry can be quickly surrounded and massacred, no matter how much defense they have. They are one of the best factions for siege defence that's true

It’s quite possible to stall the attack on Syracuse. Just recruit the 2 mercenary within the first 2 turns and pump out about 4 tier 2 hoplites. The Scipii wouldn’t dare. But they or the Brutii will attempt blockades. As for Macedon, you can easily blitz them with the whole of Kleomenes troops. My Macedon play had me learned it the hard way. Also, destroy Pontus fast. Their roster is annoying.

Hi 👋, this tutorial is more useful than the brutii one. Anyway I’m watching it at a later stage so have a few questions if u can help me out.
    1) I’ve lost Greece and Sicily but managed to conquer turkey 🇹🇷 holy land and much of Egypt. What do u think 🤔 I can do next? 17 cities now, but the romans are too strong. Any chance of winning?
    2) if we hit 50 cities but can’t capture Rome itself, do we win auto?
    3) u mentioned investing in temples for happiness. Does that help prevent riots or does it help soldiers fight better too?
Ps. I had problems with riots so I keep exterminating whole cities. A bit worried this influence my ability to recruit. Unfo we can’t recruit undead soldiers. Juz kidding...really wanna win.

    • @lugotorix6173
      @lugotorix6173  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi man, glad you found the tutorial useful.
1: I would have to see exact situation to give a detailed answer. However, my advice with the Romans is don't fight them on the open field. They'll soon send armies out into your territory. If they do, it means they likely aren't garrisoning some of their major cities properly. Counter attack these cities and capture them, if you do they have less capacity to recruit in the future. You're in a tough situation, but you have a strong base in the Holy Land and Egypt, so just rebuild your empire from there (probably trying to recapture Greece would be the priority).
2: To win on the long campaign you have to capture 50 settlements AND Rome, otherwise you haven't won
3: Temples do help prevent riots. Each temple has different benefits (right click on the temple icon to see its benefits). Some improve law for example (which will help prevent riots). More upgraded temples (particularly temples for Gods of War) will help improve troops as well (for example by giving them greater experience).
4: If you exterminate cities then obviously you're lowering the population so there will be less men to recruit. It depends which cities you have exterminated. If you exterminated a high growth city (Patavium for example), this shouldn't be too much of a problem, but if you exterminated a small low-growth city then you might not be able to recruit a huge amount for a while. Still, you should be able to recruit in most regions; you have to recruit a ton for it to seriously effect the population.
Hope my answers helped somewhat. Any more questions, just ask!

@@lugotorix6173 How do we turn off the fog of war? maybe that will help. My plan is to conquer to weaker states and keep the Romans for later. Right now, we've conquered Pontus and destroyed Macedon (but then lost Greece to Brutus). We've also marginalized both Seluecids and Egypt. I think after mopping up Scythia, Parthia, and Greece, we will attack Carthage and invade Europe through Spain. I can't go directly to Germany, because the Julii already blocked me and they're strong too. Then, maybe if I somehow get 50 cities...then send a really big navy just for Rome. Anyway, doesn't look likely to win, since the Romans keep beating Greece in open combat and at sea.

To turn off fog of war press ` then type toggle_fow and press enter. Your plan would probably work, but it seems like your spreading your forces over a large distance and fighting several factions at once (scythia, parthia etc). Maybe concentrating your forces on the Brutii would be better. Saying that, in my mercernary challenge I was in a similar position where I had control of the Holy lands but Brutus owned the whole of Greece. In that campaign I conquered scythia, parthia and carthage before sending a navy to rome. So either way can work

Lazy snowman433 Hi In the early game I would just have a long line of hastati or Principes, then have loads of archers behind them shooting missiles. Your infantry should be superior to any other faction, and the hastati have a missile fire as well to their advantage. Something I always like to do is have a line of infantry, and then when the enemy charges into it, have cavalry charge into the back of their line so they're trapped. Basically, if you trap any unit on all sides they will be very likely to break

I have a strategy I call the French Gate (because I developed it playing as France in MWII) which would work well with the romans.
      1/5 calvary, 1/5 archers, 3/5 infantry
Array your archers in a line facing the enemy. Draw your infantry into a line touching your archers on one side and pointed towards the enemy at 35 degree angle (a shallow diagonal), deploy your calvary on the other side of the archers.
If the enemy attacks your archers, close the gate on them with your infantry. This "crosses the T" on their line and will rolled them up quickly. If they engage your infantry, pull the infantry line back to 0 degrees right before the charge and rotate the archers to 45 degrees. Your archers will have perfect enfilading fire and should be able to route them quickly. If they split their forces between the archers and infantry, kite the units attacking your archers while your infantry defeats the numerically disadvantaged enemy. Then have them engage the units chasing your archers.
Your calvary should remain unengaged if possible. Their roll is to support the schwerpunkt. By that, I mean that if you have crossed the T on the enemy, your calvary should prevent reserve units from balancing the line. If you have enfilading fire, your calvary should screen your archers against reserve units. If the enemy is split, your calvary should screen the archers or support the infantry or exploit flanking attacks as the battle develops.

    • @K4inan
      @K4inan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Three archers. 4-5 cavalry. Rest infantry. Arrange infantry in two lines. Engage enemy with the first line, then charge your cavalry in their backs. You can also put your troops in a \/\/\/ pattern (but more stretched out). The enemy ai can only pick one of the two to attack, meaning the opposite one will start attacking their flank. I have never lost a single battle putting my troops like that in any TW single-player game, it's pure cheese.

    "Pontus is Docile"
I load up my Bruti run, and invade Anatolia, and use spys to scout.
    -Army of Chariots
-Pontus conqured Seleucia and is conquering Armenie
-Pontus took Pergamon, and the rebel settlement, and they rule all of Anatolia, half of Mesopotamian (including Partha's capital), and have an alliance with Egypt.
    "Docile"
lol can't predict things things every time.

  • @RocketHarry865
    @RocketHarry865 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I think the Greeks and other Hellenistic factions should have repalace of their archer to have its range damage reduced to 4. To compenstate they should get Slingers and Slingers should have their ranged greatly increased to long range and their slingshots should have armour pierceing. Rhodian Slingers should be increased very long range and are able to outrange all but the very best archers. Also their have melee stats and armour protection should be increased and should be recruitable for any faction that controls Rhodes.

I think you've been too hard on Militia Hoplites. They're not good, no, but compared to what other factions get from the tier 1 barracks, they are at least bronze medalists. Romans get Town Watch. Militia Hoplites will butcher Town Watch without even half trying. Parthians get Eastern Infantry. MIlitia Hoplites may have to at least half try, but they're still vastly superior to Eastern Infantry. Even barbarian factions like Gaul or Britannia, which are supposed to get better tier 1 units to make up for being stuck at tier 3 as their highest development only get Warbands. Now Warbands will beat Militia Hoplites under most circumstances, but they also suck 120 people out of their terribly low population settlements for each unit, and they're only a bit better than Militia Hoplites. The only tier 1 unit that really outperforms Militia Hoplites is the German Spear Warband, which is a larger unit of superior phalanx users with normal morale.
Militia Hoplites will do about as well as you can expect from a unit recruited from a tier 1 barracks, and will do a fine job holding down a garrison from a weak attack and blocking off any breached gates or walls from battering rams.

I always have a huge problems with the Macedonians. I havent managed to get athens or corinth ,they came and declared war to me. So i took them Corinth, now Athens will be next but i still need to keep building ships as they block my every city. My war with Macedonians is more like a sea war than a land war. Also i wanted to secure peace with the Ponts but so far i only have trade agreement. Dont know how to achieve more with them. Its really possible to get peace with Macedonians so i could focus again on Syracure ? (i lost them).
And BTW i think Crete is a good target too,you will aslo get their archers.

When I played Greece can’t really get any war dogs like the romans, but as u pointed out, they r not that useful more like pets I guess.
Btw In another video u mentioned we can unlock Spain and Thrace by editing something. Can u explain a bit how to do that? I’d like to play Spain for a change bcuZ I never played them b4. Real Madrid!!!

If it requires buying an expansion pack that’s ok 👌🏻 don’t wanna spend more real money 💰 on this. From historical fictions book 📖 I read they normally say the Numidian cavalry are the best. Hannibal used them against the romans. Is this true in total war Rome as well?
Ps. Sorry using the Greek channel to ask questions about other factions, but I’ve played Greece longest -& still working hard on winning this. I think I can take Sicily. For some strange AI reason scipio is weak in this round

    • @lugotorix6173
      @lugotorix6173  6 ปีที่แล้ว

No you don'y need to buy an expansion pack to unlock those factions. I made a video a while back on how to unlock them: th-cam.com/video/9e0ZEh3fP-0/w-d-xo.html follow the instructions and it should work! As for Numidian cavalry, it's quite underwhelming in the game comparatively to other faction's cav. Numidians do have unique javelin cavalry, although Romans have a similar equivalent called cavalry auxilia. I would recommend watching my Numidia faction guide for more information on this.
      Good luck with your campaign!

We managed to conquer 35 cities now (Asia, all the Mediterranean islands 🌴 and Egypt 🇪🇬), but scipio’s counterattack is really strong. The one problem I have is not being able to break his cavalry charge. Trying to recruit more spartan hoplites to do this, but they r hard to come by even when we’Re pretty loaded.
Not sure what to do. Are the desert mercenaries useful against Roman cavalry? I hired some green guys on 🐪 camels. Tough game.

still playing xD i keep raising forts all over the place. got 1 peasant maintaining forts in back and couple militia hoplites on front line forts. Forts are pretty great when u can round up all that breach manpower into gate-guarding phalanx deathtrap. If brutii want to reach my towns by land, thell need to kill out like 4-5 thermopylae-forts in a row first xD

Miesnieks interesting question. I would probably say Egypt because they have a strong starting position (with two world wonders), lots of easy rebel territory nearby to take (bostra,Petra etc) and weaker factions surrounding them (seleucids). Also they have a strong army roster.

Hold down the Alt key when you order any unit to attack and they will use their secondary weapons if they have one. For pikemen, it makes them use their swords. It’s good for when the pike formation starts to get overwhelmed and the pikemen are better off using their swords.

  • @mattphillips2844

The easiest and most boring campaign because of one unit, the armored hoplites. It only takes city barracks and one turn to recruit them. When you play against AI they can’t be beat. Add in the wide range of temples, starting in the richest area of the map, and all the benefits of a “civilized” faction it allows constant economic expansion and easy upgrades to units and economy. You basically just can fend off lesser factions and expand at will with very boring battles where you just let the enemy run into your spears while your archers annoy the enemy to charge in.

It’s really hard to beat scipio on mainland Africa. He controls the sea lanes. The distance from Egypt which we control and leptis magna is so far, and there are limits to how many armies u can group, so he keeps picking on them one by one as they march to leptis magna. Not sure how to beat him

To be honest, I find this to be the easiest faction in the game.
Just blitz macedon and wipe them out. Hold Syracuse and make sure you build up a bit there before launching a counterattack on Scipii (let them attack because hoplites are incredible on defence).
Once you have sicily and Greece under your control you should be able to reliably produce armoured hoplites on the regular. Congratulations, use them to conquer the world, starting with rome.
Once you have all of Italy you'll be too big to fail.

They ran in with their velites, straight into my phalanxes. By the time the Pricepes arrived, the velites broke and their infantry broke without even throwing their pila. Then they decided the best bit of the map to run to was the bit on the other side of my spear wall, so hundreds of them just impaled themselves.
The AI has its moments, but this wasn't one of them lol. Thanks for making me pick this game back up!
