The earth's centre of gravity is approximately 40 km from the centre of the earth in the direction of the moon. Is this where the ball would eventually come to rest? And would it float in mid air, given that the force (or pull) of gravity would be equal on all sides?

Maybe because when you fall, the gravity drops you at high speed. Digging down has nothing to do with gravity. When you dig a hole, you're holding the handle. The gravity is keeping you on the ground. But when you fall, the gravity is pulling you down with high force. So that's why.

it should really be an invitation to push our boundaries, and in fact overcoming problems is what advances civilisations as the methods and technologies used and the discoveries made would carry over in advancements in other sectors of human endeavor, for instance creating equipment that can effectively withstand the heat and pressure at these depths would carry over into things like space exploration (for instance materials for suits and verhicles)
So the centre of the earth is 6000 Celsius, assuming liquid nitrogen (or something better) would work at that point and we could find something that wouldn't melt before we cool it or crack while cooling it, and that we could also drill through the earths crust, then we'd probably have a small chance of getting there....

I honestly think we should try, go to a desolate desert or tundra section off a massive area and start digging down as if we are building a quarry or an open air mine, but at an absolutely massive scale, in effect an inverted piramid of sorts, just more stable and allows the hole to be much wider, the goal should be to just go all in on this, really try to get as deep as possible all the while investigating the minerals and soil as we go until we reach our limit, likely due to the extreme heat at which point we start designing equipment that let's us go deeper still, ever further who knows maybe it would open up possibilities for geothermal energy and desalination if you use seawater for the steam
interestingly, if we were to decide to build downwards instead of upwards we could effectively put a geothermic energy instalation at the lowest levels able to power not just the residence but likely an entire cityblock, central heating would also be no problem offcourse, you could even use it for desalination purposes, letting salt water drive the system and catching the steam at the top, remineralise it to drinkwater conditions and voila, you could in addition utilise a tradition steam turbine with sterling engines which could hug a massive tank of the desalinated water on top and the lowest point of the system down below to have an even greater temperature difference than if the cool side were just the surface temperature above maybe it's just wishfull thinking but the idea clearly beats "the line" in both purpose and plausability

If you want to be sure not to make a mistake, the simplest rules to follow are: Use farther only when you are referring to distance, literal or figurative. Use further only to mean “more”
About 2800 km, at that depth there's a temperature of around 3000 Kelvin, so Tungsten could still work to build with, but lower than that and even tungsten melts. (It's not a sharp limit, just an approximation). I've been a geo scientist on the oil rigs for the last 19 years and the deepest well I've ever been on was 38,842' in the gulf of mexico.

You could drop a superheated volume of tungsten, and if hot enough, the tungsten should melt its way all the way to the core. The deeper the material goes, the hotter and softer the rock becomes, so the problem would be that beyond a certain depth the "rock" would immediately flow back into the hole. It would be like drilling through water, unless you can make a liner that will hold up to pressurized magma at whatever temperature it is at depth.
