When parliament commissioned this clock in 1854, they insisted Big Ben be the biggest, most powerful clock in the world. It takes an hour and a half to wind this massive engineering marvel!

That's amazing considering when it was built, Greenwich mean time was announced by newspaper. "The time is now...Tuesday."
Big Ben now quiet while the tower is being restored and it won't resume for four years except Remembrance Sunday and at Christmas. The tower is now being covered with scaffold all over. I think it will be three years now before it will be finished.
I know it was (originally) supposed to resume chiming this year-2021-hopefully the pandemic has not affected anything, any prior plans.

I have climbed up to see Big Ben strike twice. Both times were amazing.
There are actual words to the chimes. 4 at quarter past. 8 at half past. 12 at quarter to and 16 on the hour
Followed by the count of the hour on the hour, of course. Just like typical grandfather clocks and chime mantle clocks. I have two chime mantle clocks, one plays the quarterly Westminster chime.(The other I only have counting the hour and chiming once on the half.)
As any chime clock lover (including myself) knows, the purpose of the quarterly Westminster chime notes is: 4 at quarter past the hour is because 4 is 1/4 of 16, 8 at half past, because 8 is 1/2 of 16, 12 at 3/4 past the hour (in other words, quarter till the next hour), because 12 is 3/4 of 16, and finally all 16 notes on the hour, because the hour is up, followed by the count of the new, or next hour.

Why not just get a digital watch and sync it to time.is before going to do the time check then check if big been strikes exactly at 10:00:00 rather than using the stop watch?
Although 1854 may seem like a long time ago, it's actually quite recent. I mean, seeing that England's history goes way before 1000 AD.

Doesn't mean anything if there are no "time pieces" with the alternative of course in having a time piece all could now "check their watch and see what time it was"(accuracy of the time piece relative to Big Ben) if working the same "time" as Big Ben very good time piece greatly increasing practically inventing "produtivity." Nice backup in case all this electronic stuff fails as well..

The Clock Tower above the Houses of Parliament is truly a marvel of Victorian engineering! Who says the Victorians were stupid & thick-skinned people, far from it!
To think we have the likes of Edward John Dent who designed & built the Great Clock's mechanism & Edmund Beckett Denison who designed the Great Clock's 3 legged gravity escapement & 2 second pendulum which keeps the Clock accurate within the 2 seconds tolerance permitted!
Long may the Great Clock keep accurate ticking & the quarter chimes & Big Ben itself make themselves heard over London!

There is a common misunderstanding. Just to be clear, Big Ben is JUST the big bell. It is not any of the other bells or the clock or the tower. I often see people point at the clock tower and say that's Big Ben. But you don't see it. You only hear it.

He doesn't do it by himself. He's one of 3 clock maintainers, they go up together. They take turns winding it for a few minutes at a time, so the others can rest. There are actually three weights that have to be wound up, but only the one for the going (timekeeping) train is still wound by hand. The chiming and striking trains have motorized winding now.

I'm confused. I could have sworn that weight had no bearing on pendulum timing. I recall conducting experiments in physics classes showing that the only thing that affects the timing of the pendulum is the length.
The weight (coin) was placed on stacks of others on the shelf that forms the base of the pendulum. As the commentary explains, the position of the new weight on top of the stacks *raises the centre of gravity* of the pendulum. Since the centre of gravity is now closer to the fulcrum, the effective length of the pendulum is shorter and therefore so is its period.
basically the length of the pendulum was "changed" by raising its center of gravity resulting in its effective length being reduced and therefore, the time required for the pendulum to perform a full swing is changed.
Big Ben doesn't keep time. Big Ben is the bell. The tower is called the Elizabeth tower!

180dB is about 1 million times stronger than 118dB. That sound would literally kill you.
118dB is plausible for a passenger jet takeoff heard from a realistic distance (say 60+ metres). A military jet taking off from a carrier deck, where personnel have to be much closer, is around 130-140dB, which is why ear protectors are mandatory.
