  • Dr. Degia makes a case for greater emphasis to be placed on the social sciences. She believes that their insights can provide a better understanding of how our society is made up; perhaps revealing uncomfortable truths. But what story do these uncomfortable truths weave and can they help us to begin to move forward as a society?
Haajima Degia is a Barbadian sociologist with research interests in identity, race, ethnicity, migration, multiculturalism, diasporas and gender. She currently teaches Sociology at the Barbados Community College and is a part-time lecturer in Sociology at the UWI Cave Hill Campus. She holds an MA in International Studies and Development from Ohio University. She was a recipient of the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship in 2005 and in 2006 she was awarded the International Peace Scholarship for Women. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy (Sociology) from UWI Cave Hill in 2014. Her groundbreaking research focuses on identity construction among ethnic Gujarati Indians in Barbados. She continues to engage in research linked to ethnicity and the intersection of social class, race and gender and how these categories work in the construction and maintenance of social boundaries.

Dr. Degia being insightful as she always is with her students. She was my favorite lecturer when I was a student because of how she was able to put across complex topics to us in easily understandable ways.

I can never get tired of listening to Dr Degia's insightful approach. Reminds me of my UWI days. She was one of my favorite lecturers. She packs a powerful punch but does so without showing off, or flaunting. I am proud of you Dr Degia! I never knew your background but was always impressed by your approach to life. keep climbing.

Dear Ms Degia, You don't know how emotional I got when I saw this. I was in your class and admired how brilliant you are. You were intelligent and it came so natural to you, that you didnt have to pretend or put on airs and graces. I however never knew the challenges you confronted to get to where you are now. You are a phenomenal woman!! Thank you for this.

Listening to this reminded me of my UWI days when I would look forward each week to going to Dr. Degia's Sociology lecture and tutorial. Great talk and I think this is the same room her lectures took place in.

We are all different regardless of our ethnicity. Every person has unique perspectives. Quit making it a ethnic problem!! We are all humans! Good night
