    Dr Amir Khalil thought he was just going on another job. The veterinarian from the Vienna-based charity Four Paws International had been invited to Pakistan, where he was tasked with training a five-tonne Asian elephant in preparation for his relocation to a sanctuary in Cambodia. Kaavan had spent more than 30 years in the Marghazar zoo in Islamabad, after being gifted to Pakistan by Sri Lanka in 1985.
    After decades of mistreatment, and a years-long campaign that gained international attention, Pakistan’s High Court finally ordered that the zoo be shut down, and Kaavan be moved to a new home. Dr Khalil knew moving Kaavan would be a monumental task, but he didn’t expect he’d form such a close bond with the elephant. “It is the first time in 30 years I built a relation with an animal,” he said.
    Kaavan is now in his new home at the Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary, which is still raising funds to build him a forest habitat. You can learn more at: spot.fund/Kavaan

      Actually, some zoos are beneficial to wild animal populations (for example Marwell and the Hawk Conservancy in the UK). Closing zoos won’t help the populations, particularly with the species that are being poached.
      Edit: for example, the scimitar-horned oryx was extinct in the wild, but there is now a “world herd,” which consists of different oryx from zoos from all over the world - the oryx were bred in the zoos and then released into the “world herd.”

      Yes, especially since elephants have the most simple and compassionate natures, all they ask for is love and kindness and they are full of joy. Elephants do not want to attack anyone but feel they have to if they or any of their fellow phants are threatened, that's what causes most attacks, that and males in musth. Otherwise, if phants are free of threats and treated kindly and lovingly, they truly are compassionate gentle giants. Sanctuaries are the perfect place to find the gentle phants for that reason, and males in musth are taken to a separate enclosure until their musth cycle ends. Male musth attacks in sanctuaries are rare because sanctuary staff are trained to notice the early musth signs in adult males before they enter the aggressive stage, so again, it's basically a garuntee that the phants roaming around the sanctuaries are full of joy and compassion, see how the phants at the Thai sanctuary are also

    I remember seeing kavaan since my childhood. I'm currently 16, and i remember his mate, saheli, who was always very friendly and the workers would allow us to sit on her back in exchange for money, while kavaan was chained. I was always told kavaan was insane, so i never thought about it that much, but with maturity i realized how messed up this actually was. for an elephant to be chained up for 32 years is absolutely unacceptable. I hope he gets the freedom he deserves in cambodia.

    • @careyostrer6193
      @careyostrer6193 ปีที่แล้ว

      CHeck him out at the Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary on social media, regular and frequent posts on Fb. Poor Saheli, she was so gentle, her life and death were horrible. And her death was from a simple wound that any person educated in elephant care could have treated. Zoo visitors informed the zoo for weeks that she was limping, they did nothing. They let her die a painful death and then pretended to cry over her. That fat gutted mahout made a big living out of them both and made physical threats to people who tried to help. Horrible bullying man. Kaavan was just about 2 yrs old when he was taken from his mother and had to become totally reliant upon that monster.

    How can you be a vet for that long and not have these amazing bonds with animals? I’m so glad Kaavan (spelling may be off..) was able to show him that and together it worked beautifully

    Awwww....beautiful documentary about Kaavan' journey to sanctuary and his relationship with the most amazing Dr Amir. I followed his rescue like a hawk. It was such an important rescue! And such emotional one for so many ppl around the globe, myself including. So so happy Kaavan was given home in beautiful Cambodia. Forever grateful to all ppl who made it happen: Four Paws, Cher, Cambodia Wildlife Centre, and Pakistan for letting him go, and many many more...Thank you!.
