The reason for only wanting 60% engagement is so that there is not too much strain placed on the starting motor due to binding. Having this amount of engagement ensures that the minimal amount of wear happens between the flexplate or flywheel and the starter gear. Thanks for watching! Thank you for watching :) Agreed, if there are damaged or “flat spotted” teeth from previous malfunctioning starters, it will affect how the new starter performs!
Guy, do you think you could actually show us where you are inserting the paperclip? I cannot get this thing to engage correctly no matter what shim is on it, and this video is useless for showing the gear to flywheel clearance.

Real easy when the motor is not in the car.
On my 350 chevy, I had to use 1/8 in. Shims between starter and aluminum block to keep pinion gear from rubbing on flywheel. Very poor design

@Phillip B 10-4
That's great, but how the heck do you do this on the car with a bellhousing installed?
There will only be space on one side of the starter pinion gear when checking properly.
thanks for the great video.

why only 60% engagement? seems like the steel would wear faster with less area?
Why would starter starting to
Grind after one year?
Awsome and informative thank you .
when using the paper cilp do you have space on both sides of the starter gear?

There must be a better starter out there than Powermaster. These just don't seem very durable at all.
You shouldn't have to do all of this BS... if its specifically made for a small block Chevy.
This is crap, how are you supposed to test that when the gearcase is on.. what a waste of time...
Exactly...
It wasn't bad but he DID damage the oil pan when he dropped the starter on it at 3:06
