I'm going onto my 3rd power master starter since the rebuild one month ago. Luckily Summit has been great in its return policy, and has continued to send me new ones, after they destroy themselves. O.K, Ford 400, new everything. Can make the measurement on the face to face clearance, which is over .100, which power master recommends, but how are you supposed to do the paper clip clearance measurement, when the entire pinion to flex plate area is completely covered by the tranny housing?? These starters works great for the first 10 or so starts, but then doesn't disengage and the engine spins the pinion until the death of the starter, a sound I've become very familiar with. Now, I've purchased a heat shield wrap, new 1 gauge wires, and a new Odyssey 950cca battery. I've never has so many problems with a starter install... Oh and when I put the old Ford OEM starter back in It works flawlessly. Oh well, Saturday is the big arrival of the 3rd starter, I hope this one works, because I love the gear reduction, and they just sound cool!... Any adviCe?

Sorry to hear of the issues with your starters Bob. I'd recommend going straight to Powermaster as there has got to be an application issue or something odd happening here. Please email me from my home page and I'll try to get a contact from Powermaster to reach out to help get you squared away.

@@ingeargarage thx for the quick reply, IGG. I have their#, and have spoken with them already. The only thing the tech there recommended was to make sure there was at least 11 volts at the big wire connection stud while cranking. I had about 10.
Can this be the problem? That's why I purchased the new wires and bigger battery. I'm going to call them again before this install. Thx again- Bob

Mine are doing the same thing , but I have an ls engine . Gear keeps getting stuck on flexplate . I can't measure the clearance either, so on this last starter, I put both shims in from the get go . Starter sounded great , quiet , no odd noises. Last night , I had an issue I've been trouble shooting were my knock safely system pulls 10* at low rpm and won't reset til I kill the engine and restart it. I was close to home, so I eased it to the house before I killed and restarted the engine . Pulled into the yard, shut it down , and on restart, the system reset , but the starter stuck in the flex plate. I'm going out there now to examine and try the trouble shoot the engagement . I'm suspecting I'm getting too much engagement and need to shim the starter with the round shim . This is the second one to " stick " on me . I haven't tried to warrantee them . I think I'm setting them up wrong , but I can't measure because I can't get the gear out to check clearances before hand .

Hey Man. Good video. What do I do with my starter because the cap is too large between my starter and the ring gear? Thanks for sharing.

How far of a distance do you have? At this point, you're going to need to verify the right flexplate/flywheel for your application (the starter too). What are you working on?

@@ingeargarage Good question. This motor is out of a 1968 or 69 Camaro. It is a 307 SBC. I don't know what the starter is out of. I am building a 1954 Doge Fargo 1/2 to. As I said the motor is from a Camaro. The starter is unknown, the transmission is from and 1970 Pontiac Parisian, The driveshaft is custom-built, and the rear axle is out of a 1993 GMC Jimmy. So I am going to say that you can't give me any advice. Thanks for replying.

I recently installed a new starter. The problem is the starter is free spinning. I've changed the battery terminals and installed a new battery. When I hooked up the new terminals to the battery. The starter is not engaging. What could be the problem.

Thanks for watching. First thing I'd check would be the voltage reading at the ignition terminal (small one) and the battery terminal of the starter. If there's less than 11 during cranking on the ignition terminal it may sound like it's spinning freely. I'd also recommend giving the techs at Powermaster a call to discuss your issue so they can ask questions and provide more tips along the way.
