  • Tour of Stops of the new release of Evensong Music. This is the Aeolian-Skinner-Organ of the Pasadena Presbyterian Church (CA). This Demo was played on the Gloria Klassik 230 using Hauptwerk and the Skinner-Sampleset made by Evensong Music.
    I've added a bit of reverb in Hauptwerk itself (3 seconds). The original set is a bit more dry sounding.

    For those not familiar with American organs, a Flauto Dolce stop found on these organs will generally be a muted string, and a Flute Celeste found in the same division will be designed to be paired with this rank. Skinner invented this combination, and modern American organs still feature it, usually on the Swell.

    I'm just gonna leave timestamps here for the undulant stops, which I love listening to on any organ :)
    13:07 - Choir (flute céleste)
    29:11 - Swell (voix céleste)
    39:52 - Echo
    45:09 - Solo
    Thanks for doing this, Paul! Partly because of your demo, I bought a licence for this organ.

. . ich liebe es!

    Now that I've read the stoplist, I see that it's very typical of G. Donald Harrison: an excessive number of high mixtures,
    and no meaningful reed chorus on the Great.

    Wonderful demostration! Most Great Divisions on Aeolian Skinner organs do not have the regular 8' Trompete or 16, 8, 4 Reeds. Primary reason is because the Great is used for hymn playing. Also the Trompette En Chamade in the Echo was added by Schantz in 2002.

      Hey Steve, sorry to hear that! I think I havent saved the settings (it was a 14 day trial set). BUT I'm sure that I used not more than 3 or 4 seconds reverb. Its important that you set the "mixing" to about 30-50 in the reverb tab, that it sound more fluid. Please e-mail me for further info, I can send a a picture of what I mean :-)

    How do you move the file from ilok to hauptwerkV?

    • @PaulFey
      @PaulFey  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mhh - you have to activate the License for the sampleset in iLok to use the set. After this you have to download all the sampleset files (several GB) and install that in Hauptwerk - thats the way I do it usually 😀

  • @dariussala6377

    Awesome demonstration as usual. I was going to ask about the audio setup that you have. I have a Sennheiser HD660s and sometimes the audio cracks. Do you think it's because of the audio amplification on the pc (I use a 3.5mm from the audio jack to an amp) or the polyphony/compression is too low/high?

    • @PaulFey
      @PaulFey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you!!
      I know exactly what you mean - i think its computer related - Ive experienced this as well when adding a lot of stops at once - i think its a ram-speed issue, but couldnt pinpoint it aswell. In the recordings its not present though!

    • @dariussala6377
      @dariussala6377 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PaulFey My RAM is at 2133 speed. I am planning to upgrade my pc bc it's 4 years old and I want to add at least 64 gb ram with 3200 speed. That or the audio on the motherboard is not that great..

      @@dariussala6377 In general, motherboard-based audio is adequate enough "to get by on" if you're on a strict budget. If you can afford a good USB-based streaming-audio Digital-to-Analog converter, you will notice a great improvement in the sound quality. Anyone who cares greatly about music should seriously consider owning one.
      In America, there is an excellent on-line ordering source for these converters, as well as for nearly everything else a serious audio enthusiast could want (ranging from headphones to record turntables (believe it or not!), to loudspeakers, amplifiers - even vinyl LP records. Here's the web-link to "MUSIC DIRECT," the USA online vendor of all things audio:
      www.musicdirect.com/ MUSIC DIRECT is located in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A., and it has a very extensive online catalog.
      I use a French-made USB-based streaming-audio d-a converter, the "FOCAL ARCHE" together with Focal's 'Stellia' headphones. The sound from this combination, when listening to Paul Fey's stream here, is superlative.

    You mean Aeolian-Skinner Organ, right? That's what it sounds like. To say "Skinner Organ" implies an instrument by E.M. Skinner,
    or later, The Skinner Organ Company. But anyway, the sample set sounds good.

    This demonstration of the Hauptwerk samples doesn’t sound anything like what the organ sounds like in real life. The reality is it sits in a moderately dry room, doesn’t have the in-your-face presence, nor can it be described as bass-heavy as is this version. Well, that’s the beauty of Hauptwerk and other systems like it - one can fiddle with the settings until the result is either an improvement or a degradation of the original, and often a bit of both depending on the experience of the person doing the regulation. If the room only had the wet acoustics of this demo the organ would be far more interesting to listen to than it is. It is my understanding that many/most of the ranks in the Echo division (really just an antiphonal) were those saved from the church’s Murray Harris organ, hence the early 20th Century style of voicing.

    • @PaulFey
      @PaulFey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True! That’s why I‘ve added the reverb, it’s just not really pleasant to the ear otherwise 😀

    • @kevingilchrist5920
      @kevingilchrist5920 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul, the popularity of this instrument in the current room are due to the personalities involved, all of whom I consider friends. At the time of the major earthquake (1971 Sylmar/San Fernando) I was not involved with church music except for having an interest in organs - I was an oboist with a strong interest in baroque music interpretation. I never heard the Aeolian-Skinner in its original acoustic. I can only describe the current room as strange for music, and the original room, with whatever acoustic it had, was what drove its original scaling and layout, and the new room’s design must have been driven more by appearance than anything else. The acoustic didn’t even support the spoken word and there is now the ugliest speaker array hanging in the room.

    • @LauraMonteros
      @LauraMonteros ปีที่แล้ว

      The echo ranks were saved from the original church after the 1971 earthquake, as were the ranks of the main organ, but were not installed in the new sanctuary until 2003. The Trompette-en-chamade was something of a wish until a special gift made the addition possible. The original installation was in a neo-gothic sanctuary, which was probably more suited to the sound than the brutalist architecture of the current sanctuary. Still, I feel blessed to be able to hear this organ every Sunday!
