  • The penultimate round, round 8 of the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC) held at Lakeside Raceway in Queensland on July 14 1991. With stronger pace from all the top teams, all the contenders were running faster than they were in round 4 with some running a little too hard resulting in excessive tyre wear.
The Benson & Hedges team of Tony Longhurst and Alan Jones took a giant killing 1 2 victory in their BMW M3 Evolutions from Jim Richards in the Gibson Motorsport Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R.

Those DTM BMWs were mega! And they were pegged back from the DTM series to fit in the ATCC aswell.

Sure was! Especially towards the later end of 1991 when they finally fixed the handling and performance issues with the VN.

Went for a drive to Lakeside yesterday, havent been there really since this race and the ‘93 round. Fantastic memories, great track. Although I noticed the Control Tower is gone now 😳

I feel Tony Longhurst never got the credit he deserved racing the E30 M3.
