  • Building the Pacific PR01 F1 car as driven by Bertrand Gachot during the 1994 Formula 1 season. This car is a minor conversion of the Tamiya 1/20 scale Benetton B192 kit, using Studio 27 decals. This process was made easier by the fact that the real Pacific PR01 was itself just a 1992 Benetton car with minor changes.
    This car was not very successful during the 1994 season, and this model is not the best I have ever produced, but I still like the livery.

    Bertrand Gachot has a incredible story on a podcast with Eddie Jordan and David Couthard about a race in the Pacific where he turned right and the whole steering rack tore itself out from the chassis leaving him heading to the wall at 150mph 😂 they were held together with sticky tape and good luck so the model is more well held together than the car ever was. One thing tho I always thought Gachot was Belgin? Not French,
    Fair play for marshaling good luck and great build

      Cheers Calum. I'll have to look up that podcast! I believe Bachot raced under the Belgian flag initially, then the French flag, and later the EU flag. He's half Belgian/half French.

      Haha, I hadn't even noticed that until you point it out. Insane! These days the FIA are incredibly strict - we can't enter the track without permission, even if there is an obviously big accident. (That said, they also have a lot more biometric data from the driver to know his condition)

    I've followed F1 for years but Pacific is one team I had totally forgotten about. I had Oliver Gavin's, name in my mind now of Corvette racing fame. I had to Google it but he was their test driver.

    • @ModelNerd

      Very easily done - especially in the says when practice and even qualifying weren't always on tv (and you'd be hard pushed to find Pacific in a race session!).

    Interesting indeed.
    It really hurts me that I've gone back into this hobby after decades of absence and all the nice kits from the golden F1 era are a thing of the past and very rare.
    Where are all the modern kits of the Turbo cars of the mid 80s or the NA cars of the late 80s, they were beautiful and the last manual/mechanical F1 cars before the Playstation ones took over.
    Where's the Leyton House, the 7Up Jordan, the Marlboro McLaren, Nigel's and Prost's Ferrari.
    I guess I'll just have to wait...

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It could be a long wait for new kits, unfortunately. There are a few new kits from companies like Ebbro (70s Tyrrells). However, the older Tamiya kits are still fairly easy to get on eBay - you might have to wait a few months to find one at a decent price, but I got all of mine from there and all at decent prices.

      @@MikeUSA67 Some Just Stop Oil protestors climbed a fence and ran onto the track while it was live and sat down, with the intention of gluing themselves to do. Luckily for them the race had already been red-flagged due to an accident at turn 1. Marshals dragged them off.

    Hiya MN! I think you shouldn't be too hard on yourself - this is an excellent build, and it looks great. But why didn't you just paint on the missing green stripe in the back? BTW thanks for the educational part of your video: I didn't know that the son of Jean-Paul was a racing driver - let alone in F1. And I never heard of the Pacific team, or at least I can't remember them since 1994 was a sad, sad year from the start. I can't believe almost 30 years have passed, the memorial ceremony in Brazil is still vivid in my mind

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Mike. Yes, I could have painted the stripe but I wasn't sure of its extent (I couldn't find any overhead shots) or what the text inside said. Pacific competed in 1995 too (with a dark blue car I think), before going bust partway through the season if I remember correctly.

    Great build! Some of these early '90s F1 teams were like mayflies!
    Ilmor engines would go on to produce the Mercedes F1 engines.

      Thanks! Yes, I really enjoyed that era of F1. Sure there were teams who never made it onto the Sunday afternoon grid, but it was still interesting and less....glamourous perhaps. I've a few sets of decals for conversions of other cars, though few are as obscure ad Pacific. I've a nice Jaguar set to convert the MP4/13 :)
