After Frank McHugh has been such prime comic relief the whole film, seeing him so solemn at the end is what always drives home the loss for me. A wonderful performance in a wonderful film.

What a beautifully acted but very sad movie. I loved the beginning when Dan and Joan first meet in a tavern with a piano playing lovely sentimental tunes from the period as he introduces her to a "paradise" cocktail.. Thought provoking and very romantic. My mother cried a lot watching this movie. I had a hard time keeping the tears back myself.

Just wrapped up my second viewing courtesy of TCM. Didn’t think this would get me misty again, but here we are. One of the gentlest precodes I’ve seen in spite of the tragedy. Although by the looks of this ending, Dan and Joan may have gone to those other golden gates after all.

Just watched it for the first time. Expected to be underwhelmed. Instead- from start to finish, I was captivated, fascinated and highly entertained. The pace of the movie was exhilerating and all of the actors were wonderful. Not generally a big Frank McHugh fan- but I have to admit, the interplay between him, Aline MacMahon and Warren Hymer was hilarious. The ending knocked me for a loop! Wow!! Yet another great turn from the great William Powell and Kay Francis was lovely. A gorgeous film.

@@stuartperry1047 I love to hear that. People want raciness from precodes but as Mankiewicz alluded to, the blueprint for Hollywood films had not been put into motion yet, so this is also something to love about them. Case in point you get a plot about a death row bound man and a terminally ill woman that gets treated with the gravitas and seriousness it deserves. But none of this is to mention the comedy with those three that you brought up, and it’s indeed scrumptious. When I first watched this, MacMahon reminded me of Barbara Stanwyck in The Lady Eve with the ease with which she slips into this outlandish persona that everybody buys, hilariously.

Aline McMahon is great as the fake countess. The ending is both touching and gut-wrenching.

@@tomc8115 Just rewatching it made me teary *again*! Just the way "Until New Years Eve" is said I think, as if they've been married for years and will for many more, and he's just being detained for awhile. 🤧

@@bespectacledheroine7292 The first time I watched it, I was like "C'mon, Hollywood, give these two a happy ending!" Alas, not to be, in the traditional sense. Such a great movie.

Frank McHugh was everywhere in the 1930s and 40s. One of my favorites.

It's horrible. And she plays it perfect...goes completely bug-eyed at the news of his arrest. Dies in the arms of her physician. And McHugh, stock straight, sober as a judge, grim faced at the bar, New Year's Eve. The kids, they are dead.
But, the cop/"Steve" and the girl/"Betty" save it from being total loss. They're this film's salvation. She'll give up the graft, cast her lot with this human being who has learned his lessons, him with her and salvage something from such agony.

So much better chemistry in this one than the only other pairing I've seen about a jewel thief and Kay...can anybody recommend a good Powell /Francis movie that's romantic like this one?

Ladies Man, 1931, is quite good and has a young Carole Lombard to boot, but not in the league of this and Jewel Robbery IMO. Have not seen their other pairings, but I should!

I believe The Love Boat series had their own version of this story during one of their big event episodes. I think it was their trip to China. John Forsythe and Ursula Andress were the doomed lovers, and there was even the broken glasses at the end.
