Theming Cinnamon is just superior IMO. Gnome doesn't let you theme all apps for no reason, on KDE theming is unnecessarily complicated and on Cinnamon it's just perfect. Drag your stuff into icons or themes and apply it to one of the four categories. No hassle, no PhD needed, just works.

Cinnnamon still uses more GTK3 apps, which is why it works so well. GNOME is still mid-transitition to GTK4, which is themed differently and still has a lot of changes due to its delevlopment. At some point it's probably gonna be the same

I really liked the video and discovered some interesting Applets, but as a Mint/Cinnamon lover that also thinks it looks WAY too old by default I found a quick way to make it look more modern without changing so much stuff.
Simply choose the "Mint-Y-Light-Dark" theme, then the "Papirus-Dark" icons (HUGE boost in terms of freshness, and both included in the default Mint Cinnamon installation), move the Start menu and docked programs to the center (like in Windows 11) and with the right greyscale wallpaper the OS looks 10 years younger with settings you can change in less than a minute!
Not taking anything away from your video of course, I love theming and this one you showed came out really nice, just wanted to add something super quick I do to my Mint computers that I want to keep close to stock without looking like Windows '98 :)

    • @DevJeremi

For me having start on center is the stranges idea that M$ ever got.

    • @agoniavr
      @agoniavr หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@DevJeremi well, it's a matter of preference but I can totally see why you think that. It was the same for me when I used only Windows and first experienced that change, as I always swore by the bottom left positioning of the Start button and menu since Windows '98.
My preferences changed when I got Windows 11 as soon as it got released, then I added a M1 Mac Mini to my setup and I started using Fedora/GNOME more and more.
I got back to Mint from Fedora since then, but at that point it was the only DE where my menu was on the bottom left by default and it kinda felt both odd and outdated to me, which is why I moved it to the center.

The Mint team is doing a great job. They will probably fork GNOME apps and make GTK4 apps without things like libAdwaita. If Cinnamon gets big enough, it will probably be something like what GNOME would have been like if it still had its old philosophy. Like GTK-based KDE. The Mint team and Cinnamon should be supported.

KDE is the most customizable desktop in linux, however theming in KDE is weird. Most themes look unstable or inconsistent except the default breeze theme. Theming in GTK desktops is better. Cinnamon is the best option for this. I very like GTK + Orchis dark theme (black + macos+solid version). The only problem with cinnamon, it's currently not good at providing a great wayland experience for now. I know it will change soon! I also hope they will remain the incredible touchpad gestures customization in wayland too

Great video! I'd love to see a similar video for MATE 💙

MATE, really? And I guess while we're already in 1998, we might as well do one for Xfce.

@jmacdono And people wonder why no one wants to move to Linux ... too much negativity in the community.
I have a few older laptops mixed in with my newer ones including a 2014 MacBook Air that can't run Cinnamon but does just fine with MATE. I'll likely be passing this down, keeping more e waste out of the trash, and I'm sure whomever gets it will be more than happy to have a functional machine and if I can "jazz" it up with better looking graphics, that's even more of a positive

I have heard burn-in is not that bad as long as you don't use overall bright imagery anymore.
Kinda scared since I also want to get one without having the Davinci Resolve interface burned in

Yes, you could style Cinnamon to have a shell like layout, or you could use gnome shell

@@MichaelNROH Ok, sorry then, it seems TH-cam is simply just doing TH-cam things...
The comment I made was sent, and I even saw it on the comment section, but hour later the comment was gone...
I did make a comment related to "ocs-url" which is the app used for "cinnnamon-look" and other sites from that domain.
      Sorry for the inconvenience.
With that app you don't have to manual extract and put files you download to your certain directory, this app simply download, unpacks and transfers everything you need to proper place - and if that place does not exist, it just creates one.
It is very Linux-new user-friendly and simply wanted to mention it since this fits to the topic of your video, that's all

    That's... that's just GNOME.
There's no reason to use Cinnamon if you're not using it the traditional way, because you'll just be using GNOME with older components.
And again, two panels are just waste of space. The original panel is already both space efficient and is easy to read.
