- After flying from Minnesota to Pennsylvania to revival a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle (Episode 82), I ended up in Kentucky. I scratched my easy flight back home and took on this 3rd gen 1984 Chevrolet Camaro that had been previously parked for 27 years. Sitting was pretty hard on it, the entire front end was seized and took a lot of work to get it into the garage to start tearing it down. Think I'll make it 800 miles home? Watch and find out! Derek, I don't have a sense of humor. Not one drop, ask my wife. I subscribed to your channel and watch every video multiple times simply because watching you gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. You are a decent, ethical guy. That carries a lot of weight with me. It's rare to find a "feller" like you in this day and age. So, may I just say THANK YOU... You sir have my utmost respect. I was a millwright for 20 years, packed many a bearing. Best way is what your doing, cup your hand and pack 'em. TIPS: start with clean hands and a clean surface. Don't over-pack, bearings need a bit of room. Make sure the race and housing is clean also. You are doing great. Old ways are the best ways. Our grandpas didnt get grey and grumpy by taking candy-as5 shortcuts.

My Dad taught me to pack them that way, so that’s how I’ll be doing them always!
My method is putting the bearing in a ziplock baggie with the lube and smushing it in there that way….

I am being inspired by the channel to begin the tinker on my 86 Buick Regal Limited. I have let her sit too long. Wish I had a gas tank pump like in this episode. I'm a woman but I was raised by parents who worked on cars so I can do a lot of stuff myself. Changed radiator, altinator and basic stuff like that.

My 89 f150 doesn't have any cracks either, it even sat for 3 years before I got it and it's still in perfect condition, I've had it almost 6 years, Sept. 20th will be 6 years

Broken cat substrate is plugging the exhaust intermittently. There's your shutdown and also why the O2 sensor blew out. I think my mullet is growing as well watching you drive that.

I know I'm a little late but that sounds about right. When I got my 1991 Camaro with the 3.1 v6 it was sounding and acting the same way. Turned out the cat would have been clogged solid if the stuff inside didn't break apart just enough to allow some exhaust to slip through the cracks intermittently. Before I fixed it, that thing would get really hot (enough to make a cold gallon of milk on the passenger side floor get warm and spoil on a short grocery trip). Sometimes if it stalled and didn't want to fire back up, getting underneath and gently persuading the cat with a 2 pound sledge would get it flowing enough to run again. The 700R4 in it acts just like that one in the video did. ...Actually this video brought back memories of dealing with almost all those same problems. The difference was, due to it being fuel injected, I also had to replace the in-tank fuel pump (either drop the rear axle to get at the tank or cut a hole in the floor. No easy way), filter and injectors (yes, I was wishing it had the simplicity of the carb). The good part is I took a couple months working on it and didn't have to do it in only a few days then drive 800 miles. It's still a work in progress and haven't decided exactly which direction to go with it either. Right now it's just an extra car to drive.
@@shawnbrown7057 -- the easy way to fix this is to cut out the cat, ram a broom handle through it a few times until all the garbage falls out (the cat is now non-functional), and then weld or clamp it back in. Tune your to pass emissions and once you have your sticker, run it how you want...not that I'm advocating bypassing Federal emissions standards, but...

Absolutely. You can't stop the plane if something catches your eye. Nothing better than a good road trip, but I might be biased, being an old trucker. I do miss the open road, between the annoying cities.

@@rudydaberry122 yep nothing beats it. Been coast to coast, across the top, the bottom, and through the middle more times than I can count, and it never got boring for me. I wouldn't fly unless I absolutely had to be there in a hurry. Since I just don't ever get into those situations, I will probably never fly anywhere. I'm 48 years old and never have yet, so why would I want to change it now. Besides you can't stop and satisfy a craving for a huckleberry shake unless you're driving. It's little things like that, that makes driving around the country worth it.

My grandad taught to pack bearings by dropping the bearing right into the “jug” of grease he always had. Then work it in by hand like you (but while still in the “jug”. He was a true believer that if a little grease is good then A LOT was better.
I figured those original tires were going to deflate "like a Tijuana Implant" so glad you changed them.

"Had Quite a few Firsts in There" refers to the time the: 1 muffler fell off on a washboard road, 2 alternator quit producen electric trocity, 3 tierod broke and tires did the splits 4 flicked cigarette out the window and the cherry came back in caught back seat on fire or went between your legs, 5 built an awkward subwoofer box for the trunk a week before manufacturers started selling bitchin boxes built for it 6 fogged up the enormous rear window with heavy breathing and had an officer shine his maglight on your girlfriend's Fun Stuff! 7 played poker on the dash because what other car has a kitchen table for a dashboard 8 fixed up your basic Camaro to look like an RS or your RS to look like a Z28 9 lost every race to them Gull Dern new 5.0 Mustangs!!! Every ChevyMan was pissed including me!!!
I bought this exact car when I was 15. From years of cutting grass. Lots of first for sure. My dad grew up in the era of the Chevelle and Nova. He knew I would regret getting rid of it later in life. He bought it off me when I started a family and kept it for me. He passed away in 2016. It had sat for a while and needed some attention. The summer of 2017 I got her in the barn and started working on her. It took me a year, multiple watches for parts, one surgery ( cut my thumb tendon and had to repair it), and lots of tears. We had always talked about working on her together but cancer took him from me. Now any time I work on her, he’s there with me and I’ll talk to him. Still love my car. Still miss my dad. Its white btw.

That's why military, firemen, mechanics, carpenters, police, etc all have powerful relationships with their peers. My Dad taught me bodywork and that severe discipline to keep checking and rechecking before applying paint made me a helluva bodyman and gave me the ability to deal with adversity throughout my life even overcoming severe autism. Grab a project, a friend, and a cold snack and accomplish something cool.

I loved every bit of this video. The '84 Camaro; the cassette tapes; everything. But the best part is you drove on stretches of highway so familiar to me I can drive them while sleeping (which I probably have). You were literally a half-hour away from my house! Keep up the good work. I love your videos and have learned a ton watching you.

Fords will run good after the Chevy poops the bed. Then a Toyota will drive by and laugh at both.
I had a chevy impala that had the entire bank of rockers pull out of the head while I was driving. Car still made it home on the remaining 3 cylinders.
@@curtism-w6b That's true from my experience. The water utility I work for only buys Fords and it's amazing how long those 5.4 tritons last with completely shot valvetrain, (rattling phasers, timing chains slapping, etc.) A couple of them had 200,000 miles and almost 10,000 idle hours, they sounded like diesel engines they were so worn out but by some miracle still ran good enough but weren't worth fixing.
I’d rather push a Chev than drive a Ford.... and imports are way too expensive to fix

so cool ,so old school, Im 65 and remember nursing some old cars to get them home. I recall using a coat hanger to tie an outer tie rod to the ball joint, a bit shaky, but got her home. My mullet grew 2 inches that day.

I tried one of those cone bearing packer 9000 things, and it took half a tube just to get some grease going... Went to the old palm packer method and much better... Just like I had always done since the late 70's.... Well, don't read anything into that statement.... I am packing wheel bearings.... Not what you are probably thinking.... Ha, ha.... :)
we used a plastic jar thing with a stick in the middle and plastic cap, put the bearing on the stick and use the cap to shove'r down one or thrice and bam shes plum full.
Clean it, fix on the trans and some new wheels and skins and sell her. You got way more projects to wrench on!
I drove through Kentucky in 2015 (Washington to South Carolina) and it was astonishing how bad the roads were. You are easily in the top five best TH-cam creators, and top three in the automotive genre. I appreciate the comforts of my newer vehicle, but it makes a guy feel pretty nostalgic to see these older cars get another chance at life. The cassettes were worth the detour.
