Thanks bro. I was sitting here debating whether or not to use the lag screws myself. I have a Husky workbench which is damned near a carbon copy of your Milwaukee version. That work top is just so thin that I don't know if using bolts will make it any stronger. You pushed my decision over the top. Gonna use lag screws, just like you did. Thanks again!
i got a 4 inch wilton bullet vise from the 70s that i bought off some old man for 250 dollars. its now one of the most important tools in my garage because i use it one way or the other every day.
Have a similar workbench (minus the drawers) and I think i'm gonna use this method so thanks for the great video and nice vise. Only minor suggestion might be to maybe wait on torqueing that first lag bolt in until you get the rest of the bolts in. Just in case your holes were off by just a bit.
Question: I noticed that the base on your Wilton vise is the same as mine (different model). And I am wondering if some instructions or logic of your own, lead you to mount the 2 (widest apart) holes at the very edge of your bench? Rather than the other way around, which would be to have the 2 (narrowest apart) holes mounted at the very edge of the bench. I am also using lag bolts on 2 of the holes, so we have that in common too. nice video!
It was a combination of the logic and instructions from Wilton. It made sense to have the wider part of the base underneath where more of the work/stress takes place. And, Wilton’s vise template shows the wider side on the edge of the bench/table that your mounting it to.
I've seen some threaded sleeves that you could put in the wood part. I'm not sure what they're called. That way you could use machine bolts to secure the vise to the wood without having to go through the metal below.
I chose the left side of the bench top because I had another Milwaukee tool box right next to the right side of this bench. The side with the most amount of space around it is how I normally choose where to put the vise.
Have the lag bolts been holding up long term? I have the same bench and was going to mount a vise. Wasn't sure if I should go with lag bolts or drill all the way through the metal and use bolts and nuts.
It all depends on how you use your vise. I would not do any major pounding or torquing if you mount your vise to this Milwaukee work bench. For anything else the lag bolts work just fine.
Can you use 3/8 bolts with nuts rather than lag screws? Lag screws may not hold vise securely enough and can loosen over time if you use this vise frequently. Great video!
tomycodd The reason I didn’t use nuts and bolts is I didn’t want to drill through the metal part of the bench, and, deal with hardware hanging down underneath there. Also, any work I do on this vise will be light duty. Look for a future video of mine where I mount my 5 inch Yost vise with nuts and bolts for more heavy duty work. Thanks for watching!

Absolutely! I’ve heard people say “A good vise is a corner stone of any good shop”. And that is so true!

This only thing missing here is a front view of the bench. So we may see exactly what this vice was being attached to.
Would of liked to see you pound and torque the 'shit out of it' to see if the cabinet and wood top took the beating.
