This is happening in igboland, so if igbos can sign in hausa and yoruba in igboland why can't they sing with their own tongue in another man's land?

I love Dr Abati's take on the first topic of analysis especially when he talked about the Priest "dispatching the flock" knowing how easily some catholic faithfuls move out of the church as soon as they feel the slightest discomfort; then talking about the "wrath of God" falling on the congregants is particularly antithetical to the teachings of the Catholic Church and I was sincerely shocked to hear the priest say that. Igbo songs dominating worship at mass is something a lot of us non-igbo Catholics have come to accept and enjoy...

I think there is a discrimination in Catholic and non igbo priest are at the new living end. I spoke with one priest and what I am hearing is not good so we need to look into it. Even if igbo is majority in that church that should not give them the right to be singing igbo song all the time because the few non igbo will be marginalised

The catholic church is an institution and will handle things accordingly

Nigerians should allow the Igbo nation to leave Nigeria in order for peace to reign in this part of the world. You can not live in peace with someone you hate, it's impossible, allow him to leave, period.

Singing Ibo songs should not be an issue in the Church for him to have stopped them only God knows other things that went with it. But suspending him is too hash an action. Anyway he's not going to loose anything for he is a priest forever like the other of Melchizedec.
Knowing Ibos as a tribe, if you give them parlor in your own house, they will take your bedroom from you, then one should think twice before you judge. They overdo that speaking/singing in Ibo language, anywhere and anyhow too.

I feel for Rev. Anelu, for not being able to participate in the funeral ceremony he went to attend because he couldn't speak Igbo, I have personally experienced that severally myself, I simply blow it off anytime things such as these happen. All tribes need to be sensitive to the feelings of others and act accordingly. Before people start writing ugly comments, I would suggest they go and watch the entire video on other channels, not the summary and opinion presented here by Arise News.

As an Igbo, if the priest wants to sing in Yoruba.. let him sing in Yoruba. Why do people care so much what language is being used, Yoruba is an amazing language to sing in as in any other nigerian language. This isn't news and is being blown out of proportion. However, I can see why some people may find this scandalous but it's really not a big deal, it's unlikely the priest intended to be discriminatory. One Nigeria One Love!

Sir, that parish, Holy Trinity Catholic Church Ewu-Owa is a stone throw to my house and is where I attend Masses. The allegation against the priest is uncalled for, we need to check ourselves as Catholics and not allow sentiment and tribalism to separate us, we should not be doing things that will bring our priests down. I was present at the Mass and right inside the church when the incidence occurred, What the priest was agitating for is a balance, what is the point when you are singing and some people did not understand what the contents are, particularly when you are in your own soil. When almost 95% of the songs are in Igbo language. The priest I gathered has been telling them to balance it because of the indegines in the church but to no avail, I even gathered that he use to be with them at choir practices where they select hymns/songs prior to Sunday Masses but they contradicted this on Sunday and that was when stopped the person singing at that time. NOT THAT HE BANNED IGBO SONGS. All he has been trying to make them understand is balancing. He made instances of some areas in the east where Masses are said in Igbo language, are there no yorubas or people from other tribes there? they don't have to complain but to flow with the Mass. It was a very sad experience to see people walking out of the church when Mass was still ongoing and gathering in groups outside the church and in the compound shouting and discussing. All efforts made by the priest to explain to them fell on deaf ears, until he was forced to end the Mass. We should be guided on our attitudes particularly when it comes to the issue of tribes and the church. I am of the opinion that the Chancery took that decision in hastily and was misguided probably by some "powerful" elements in the church, now playing into the hands of sensational Journalism.
I fear for the future of the church if things like this continue happening.
I am a trained journalist and I know what is news when I see one, I wasn't told this but I was right in on the spot. We really need to pray for the church, as Nigeria factors is now threatening her existence.

I am not yoruba but it is so good what has happened. Let the so called igbos get a taste of their tribalism because the way they are going in this country when it comes to tribalism, the only people that can match them when it comes to tribalism are the fulani people. Now they denied the reverend father from saying a mass in the southeast because he couldn't speak igbo and now they are complaining the parish priest denied them from singing igbo songs in his church. It serves them right. Igbo people and the fulani people are the major problems Nigeria has when it comes to tribalism in this country and these two groups should get a taste of their own medicine anytime they call for it. They are becoming a liability to the entire nation.

Your comment is understandable, there should be serious dialogue among priests of tribes in Nigeria. Here in Benue State, a Rev. Fr, who served at the Catholic Secretariat for many years, complained on how he was treated by his lgbo colleagues at Igbo land, it was the Bishop who heartily apologized to him. The clergy should not take their differences on the lay faithful. No one should divide the Catholic Church
