    WARNING:
Rockets are not toys, and this project really should not be duplicated. This video is mainly for educational and demonstrational purposes. If you’re going to attempt it anyway, I highly suggest contacting local rocket clubs to become familiar with local laws, and how to stay out of trouble with the FAA, and avoid hurting any people or property. Playing with unstable rocket motors could result in serious injury, property damage and/or legal ramifications. Use of this video content is at your own risk.
You should be aware that misuse, or careless use, of rocket propellants or ignition of an incendiary or explosive material may not be legal in your area. Check local laws and inquire with local rocketry clubs on how to safely make and launch sugar rockets.
Music By: Scott & Brendo (“One Afternoon” - Instrumental) bit.ly/ScottBrendoiTunes
    Project Inspired By:
A few comments from viewers suggesting to combine two previous projects to see what would happen. The delay mix and ejection charges came from the book “Easy PVC Rockets” by Jason Smiley. (bit.ly/IBEasyPVCRockets) If you check out the link, please share the love and let Jason know that Grant Thompson sent you. :) Thank you!
My friend NightHawkInLight also has an awesome video on a different method of making a cored rocket with black powder. You can see that here: bit.ly/IBBPCoredRockets
    Project History & More Info:
In a previous video on how to make sugar rockets (bit.ly/SugarRocket) I promised to show how to make a delay mix and a parachute ejection charge.
I would caution anyone wanting to launch a duct tape rocket without a parachute to take every precaution imaginable. These are not toys. They can light things on fire, and fall down on peoples heads, which I imagine could cause serious injury. You may need permits, or only be able to launch these on special experimental launch days with local rocketry clubs.
My launch was out in the middle of the dessert, miles and miles away from any people, property and anything flammable. Safety precautions were in place in case anything went wrong.
I wanted to demonstrate what happens to a rocket without a parachute. You can see it basically becomes a lawn dart. And while rockets should never be launched in an area close to people, property, or highly flammable materials to begin with, they really need to have a parachute to retard the descent rate to minimize potential damage.
I made another rocket with PVC, and a parachute from a big black garbage bag and static tested the ejection charge multiple times, with 100% success.
I didn’t have a chance to launch the rocket to test the charge while air born, but I’m extremely confident there is plenty of power to push a parachute at apogee.
I’m thinking about making a project video showing how to make a rocket with a parachute from scratch, so if you’d like to see me do something like that, leave a comment letting me know.
Once again I want to reinforce that playing with rocket motors could result in serious injury, property damage and/or legal ramifications. I highly suggest contacting local rocket clubs to become familiar with local laws, and how to stay out of trouble with the FAA, and avoid hurting any people or property. My launch was out in the middle of the dessert.
Whether or not you’re interested in rocketry, I hope you learned something new, or were inspired in some way by my experiences.
For all my friends and followers in different countries who don’t have access to these materials but still want to build rockets, watch for my matchbox rocket video coming next week. I promise you’ll be able to build this next kind. :)

I have been doing homemade rockets with my eighth grade class for the past 23 years. We use the already prepared rocket engines, but the rest of the rocket is made entirely from scratch. We use cardboard packing tubes, Easter egg nose cones, balsa or basswood fins, and parachutes made form trash bags and monofilament fishing line. I would really be interested in your spring video on homemade rockets.

Adding weight to the front is actually helpful as it shifts the center of gravity farther forward from the center of pressure. the theory of stability is that the center of pressure should be the distance of one rocket body diameter behind the center of gravity (1 caliber). any closer than that and the rocket will become unstable. if the center of pressure is forward of the center of gravity, the rocket will be really unstable. So, my point is, the weight will not negatively affect the performance of the rocket, however what may be affected is the aerodynamics.

I think by this way.. (calculating the falling time after burn up as 8 sec.)
      (9.8×8)+(9.8×7)+(9.8×6)+(9.8×5)+(9.8×4)+(9.8×3)+(9.8×2)+(9.8×1)
      =352.8 m

peter kao normal weight of a normal go pro is 8.something oz. that's less then 1/2 a lb. there is more than enough thrust and more then enough speed to get the go pro WAY UP and still only lose like 30 or less feet

I like your videos. I make BP rockets and have a sugar rocket motor kits I bought on eBay. I've been using the sugar fuel as a delay in my bp rockets and works great. I've made sugar rockets by ramming the fuel the same as I do the bp ones and they work great but I've only made small ones up to 1/2". Dia. I add a bit of red iron oxide ( rust ) fine powder. And it makes it more reactive. Wander if you can do the same with your method of melting the fuel. It is a lot hotter mix. Would like to share making helicopters with the sugar fuel as well

Black powder is a poor bomb making substance. You will essentially just make large firecrackers. There are many better chemicals that can be made with in-home chemistry and supermarket supplies if you know what you are doing.

you americans would rather say 3/32 of an inch instead of using the easy, simple and majorly used metric system.. I think it is sheer arrogance. there is nothing for lower than an inch and there is nothing in between feet and mile. 1 mile is 5280 feet. it makes no sense. same with ounce to pound, ounce to gallon. why america why..

Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" Hey, I was just wondering why you use the delay mix on top of the white mix. Is it so that the white mix doesn't blow out the blackpowder too quickly? Or is it so that the rocket has time to level out a bit?

  • @Fritzafella

I was just getting into making my own rocket engines with the kids when you put this out. I've burned through 4 or 5 engines without getting enough force to deploy a chute. The energy seems to be going out the back with the rest of the fuel. I've tried a slightly bigger and slightly smaller drill bit to bore through the clay to the delay mix. I hate to just keep adding more black powder, but maybe that's what it will take. The rocket I've retrofitted is 30" with a 24" chute. Any tips?
