      Vintage: 2019
      Med-minus straw in color. Green apple, lemon, slight hint of petrol and red apples on the nose. Apple, honey and pear, bit of lemon and cool stone, oily texuture left on the palate. It’s off-dry with short length in finish. Had sweet entry on the palate followed by bright acidity. Felt slight carbonic acid within the aftertaste. An easy drinking, crowd pleaser with fairly expressed typicity. Not much worth for further ageing.
      더 건강한 모습으로 다시 만나요, 패트릭 선생님!

    The Rieslings from Mosel and Elsass are just great. I by myself prefere the Rieslings of Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany, especially the wines from the village Forst. The winyards "Kirchenstück", "Pechstein", "Jesuitengarten" and "Ungeheuer" are very famous in Germany. That of course doesn't mean anything necessarily. But they have such beautiful mineral and tropic fruits and complexity that I just love them!

  • @drmatthewhorkey

    Love love Riesling. I'm bittersweet on the fact that it still has never caught on. It means geeks like us can get great wines at ridiculously low prices.

  • @superkinkel

    I feel compelled to comment as a German:
    - This is a great channel in general and your tasting abilities are impressive, even if you were a tad off on the first one (Bernadette was a bit too quick to give you credit for the Kabinett, even though it was a Spätlese - at least the label of the bottle showed says so).
    - The development of botrytis based wines in Germany is allegedly due to the fact that back in the day Schloss Johannisberg was property of the diocese of Fulda and harvest was only to be started upon the bishop's approval (when a messenger had brought sample grapes). That ~100 mile trip back and forth took time and one year the messenger returned only after the grapes had apparently spoilt. Being dutiful servants, they harvested anyway and found out that the result was actually very good.
    - Schnitzel in my opinion is not really typical food to be accompanied by Riesling, it works but it's certainly not a German's archetypical choice. The stereotypical German food to go with Riesling would rather be asparagus (you can have the Schnitzel on the side ...) and based on your Alsatian heritage: Choucoute or Baekkeofen.
    Anyways, keep up the good work!

    • @superkinkel
      @superkinkel 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, I now see that you simply pasted the wrong Spätlese label version of the Riesling in the video, but that you indeed had Kabinett on the table ... no I'd really like to see whether you could blind taste the difference between QbA and Spätlese QmP ... ;-)

    Riesling happens to be my favorite white and Pat has introduced me to a panapoly of them. If there was an inferior one, I haven't recognized it to be so. I'm not a wine guy but I am his friend so regardless of my unrefined nature when it comes to wines I cant help but to recognize this wine to have the most varied characteristics of any that he's exposed me to. Nice work, and thanks

    Good work on the audio and video in this one! You guys are so genuine, it's a breath of fresh air. I'm a Riesling nerd (although I watched this with some cheap weekday Italian Merlot). Prüm is a top-tier producer and I hope you bought more to stash away if you aren't already holding onto it! Or else there might be a bald headed master of wine somewhere in a cellar in Germany shrieking!!
    I would love a video on aged wine (or maybe something featured from your cellar). And if COVID calms down a guest appearance would be a cool idea. Otherwise, cheers, that pairing looks delicious.

    Pfalz, Reingau, Reinhessen, Nahe, Baden, Franken. Next time try to get some wines from these German regions. Pfalz is basically the extension of Elsass to the north, but in Germany. Warmest region in Germany next to Baden which sits directly next to Elsass :) Great video

    Production is looking great, and enjoyed your take on the different nuances of the region, and how winemakers will use carbon dioxide to add freshness. And Patrick, the way Bernadette reacted to "we need to go there, we haven't been there yet" comment about the Mosel, looks like you better start making plans and packing bags! LOL. Very nice video and production style. Sort of a mix of Jamie Oliver's Naked Chef and MTV:s "Rob the Cameraman". In the former, Oliver never looked at the camera and talked to his friend who was never visible but who also sometimes commented. Rob the Cameraman was a ubiquitos but in fact anonymous and silent cameraman. A propos, during my visit to Germany last year, I saw some older vintages of Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling TBA:s and the prices (in the thousands of euros) made d'Yqyem look like a bargain...

    Nice video, very instructive as always! Talking about Riesling, Luxembourg (which shares a portion of the Mosel river with Germany) has quite good Riesling too. I guess it is very difficult to get a bottle in the US but hope that you guys will have the opportunity to visit this beautiful region and taste it when this sanitary crisis will be behind us!

  • @jicklesjingles8134
    @jicklesjingles8134 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What I don't like about German Riesling is that they tend to have quite a lot of residual sugar while the acidity is really strong. If I would be harsh I would say they're often too sweet and too sour.
    From my experience one has to spend quite some amount to get a well balanced German Riesling.
    That's why I skip them most of the time and go with other grape varieties that offer a way higher value and quality while they cost less - especially from other countries.

    Calling the German Shepherd as the Alsatian dog may sound quite uncomfortable for the French haha. It is interesting to talk about wine, not only because the aqua vita itself is attractive, but also the wine-lover people are good cultural evangelists, too.

Looking forward to the food pairing episode. Do you recommend a go-to shop (online or otherwise) to find some of these rieslings you are tasting? Should we find it mostly from our local specialty wine shops, Costco of course for the best cost of what they have, BevMo mostly carries the biggest/factory ones, etc.? Thanks again.
