Gringolts is a veritable freak of nature, with those L-H fingers that can play any and all knuckle-busting combinations. "We're not worthy, we're not worthy...!"

Dear Ilya, this video will always be one of my absolute favourites on TH-cam. You really make music and your way of playing deeply touches me.
I hope to hear you in a concert at least once.
Greetings from a fellow baroque violinist,
    Arno

Fantastic performance.Even the creator of this difficult piece of music would have appreciated profusely! But I always give to the composer an edge in credits over the performer because of the reason that Locatelli must have created his music alone without even having gadgets for recording, reviewing, rewriting, etc., centuries ago! Bravo.

Locatelli was an enigmatic book seller. I wonder if he ever played the unusual things he wrote. At 8:40 the violin is playing many after-beats in quick succession which give the illusion that he is falling behind the accompaniment. Steven Staryk has recorded all of the cadenzas from these concertos - only the cadenzas.

Nella prefazione del 12o concerto dall'arte del violino Locatelli scrive che è facile entrare ma difficile uscire... Ha voluto rappresentare in musica il concetto del Labirinto! La creatività...

Music gives meaning to sound, from meaning to sound, is born emotion. Pietro Antonio Locatelli, is an Italian virtuoso violinist and composer of baroque music, one of the greatest violinists of his time. Pietro Locatelli : Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 3 No.12 entitled « Il labirinto armonico ». The score opens with the first movement Allegro - Capriccio. This piece comes from the work L'arte del violino by P. Locatelli published in 1733. The Collection includes 12 concertos for solo violin, strings and basso continuo, to which is added a capriccio for unaccompanied violin inserted in the first and the last movement of each concerto as a sort of cadenza. It's about of a diorama technical possibilities of the violin and from a technical point of view, it reaches the frontiers of the realizable. L'arte del violino has reached a renown and influential because these capriccio are considered to be the most difficult passages to perform in the violin literature of the entire Baroque period. The sonority limpid and imaginative phrasing of Ilya Gringolts are exceptional for this concerto. *Lucien*

So happy to see that one of the orchestra's only visible violists is not ostracized or banned for using a shoulder rest in a "Baroque" orchestra... Cannot quite tell if Gringolts manages to pull off all those pyrotechnics without even a chin-rest; sometimes it looks as if he has one, and other times not.^^

I wonder who made the drop-dead-gorgeous-and-sonorous sounding violin Gringolts is playing on??! Is it a Strad but strung up in Baroque fashion? It's just so bassy and tenor-ish then bright and vibrant in the higher registers and otherworldly AND CLEAR!!! In Gringolts' hands it's simply amazing :)

Thank you Liam! This is a Ferdinando Gagliano built "back" to its original condition, with gut strings of course.

@@ilyagringoltsofficialchannel Thank you for the reply, I wasn't notified that you had replied! Very sorry for my late comment here!
A Gagliano violin really is a great instrument and I'm glad it's under this setup. A Gagliano violin I played on for a day with a modern setup was still amazing of course... and in fact sounded better than a 1699 Strad that I also had the privilege to play for a few hours!
Mr Gringolts, I've been watching your Locatelli caprices recently and your renditions are definitely my favourite. I can't wait to hear more !

LOCATELLI conheceu o L`estro Armonico de VIVALDI...É um grande compositor e violinista vivaldiano...É herdeiro direto de VIVALDI e de outros mestres italianos! Foi muito mais rico e famoso que o Bach! LOCATELLI met L`estro Armonico by VIVALDI...He is a great Vivaldi composer and violinist...He is the direct heir of VIVALDI and other Italian masters! It was much richer and more famous than Bach!
