I am 92 yrs old, I grew up listenning Fritz Crizler, Jasha Heifez and then David Oisttrakh. And after listening Augustin Hadelich for couple of times I believe that he is perfect just like them. I cannot find a proper word to describe his virtuosity.. Gokce Ergun.

I find his sound superior to anything I ever heard. I am not quite so old as you, only 82 but have been listening to all the great once and have been playing with some of them, but to day I think he might be the best I eher heard.

Very precise indeed, but I would not say it's effortless. You can see how concentrated he is, so no wonder that he's perspiring a bit. And if you listen to his rendition of Tchaikovsky Concerto in Helsinki he was covered with big drops of sweat, which shows that it's not an easy and pleasant walk in the park for the musician. He puts it all on the altar for our enjoyment.

It would be very, very difficult to find a more virtuosic performance of this Paganini Concerto than this. The runs are crystal clear and each note rings out. Such fine bowing technique. The Detroit Symphony sounds at home with this artist in Symphony Hall with marvelous acoustics. This video captures the essence of what the live concert must have been like. Loved the spontaneous applause between movements which was well deserved. World class sounds all the way around. Simply marvelous!!

He wrote his own cadenza ! and it is beautiful, very soulful. The purity of Augustin's tone, the product of his bowing technique, and his composing distinguish him from other fine concert violinists. The del Gesu is icing on the cake. What a treat!

Hadelich plays Sveryng's del Gesu. Somehow it sounds better in his hands. It has a recognisable brilliant quality to it and may be difficult to handle without beyond perfect technique. Who thought it would be possible to sound better than Sveryng with his own violin.

Every note is considered, and makes sense musically, and when he plays the music comes so far before the technical aspects (which are effortless) - perhaps how Paganini himself would have wanted it and perhaps how he played? The downward chromatic scale at around 10:55 is one example of how he takes something showy and makes music with it.

This is the most naturally musical interpretation I’ve heard of this work. The phrasing and timing is amazing and every notes ‘sings’ that you forget about how technically difficult this work is. Very different to other performances of this work I’ve heard. The Del gesu isn’t too bad either!

  • Chad Peiper

  • Nonkel Jef
    Nonkel Jef ปีที่แล้ว +27

Perfectly balanced musicality. You can tell he really thought considered how every single note would sound best, and then gave it extra nuance, while still respecting the original meaning of the music. He's not playing to impress us with technical skills, but to produce the best possible music.

This is one of the best Paganini Concerto No. 1 performances I have ever heard. Techniques ,to him, are no longer something to impress the audience but the integral part of his being. His fingers effortlessly flied on the fingerboard, producing notes that were as pure and sweet as the honey that instantly melted in your ears. The last time I had such excitement was when I listened to Shlomo Mintz played the same concerto using Paganini’s own violin “El Cannone”. Bravo👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍🎉🎉🎉🎉

I had to muster great force of will to resist from listening to the entire performance. I just heard the first two pages of the solo violin part and no more. I didn’t want to spoil it for myself because I will be attending Mr Hadelich’s performance of this very same concerto with The Florida Orchestra in St. Petersburg next month. But the little I heard has convinced me that this is the best and most beautiful interpretation of the Paganini Concerto I’ve heard in my life since Shmuel Ashkenazi’s recording on Deutsche Grammaphon from decades ago when I was a teenager. I just love his refreshingly original and innovative approach to this often-played piece. He emphasizes the singing, Bel Canto character rather than the “look at my dazzling technique” approach that most fiddlers prefer. Mr. Hadelich is the Numero Uno among today’s great violinists, in my opinion, and I’m so grateful he’s coming down to Florida soon. Thank you!! 🙏🏻🎻

On one level it is just great to hear a performance of this piece which understands that everything Paganini wrote was, above all, lyrical, and - a few obvious lollipops and flashy variations aside - not merely an opportunity to bash the way through a load of violinistic gymnastics (the contemporary newspaper reviews most often report the rapt attention which Paganini's singing tone aroused and commanded of his audience, and not the mere flashiness of his playing). On another level, if Nathan Milstein was the Aristocrat of the Violin, then Mr Hadelich is surely his rightful successor. There's my tuppence-worth ♫

Augustin Hadelich is the best, just starting with that. I want to comment on how much better the sound quality of performance videos uploaded to the internet has become over the past couple of years. It used to be that if you wanted decent recording quality and a feeling of 'liveness', you needed to go to older Perlman-type recordings, but not now, you get CD quality with a live performance.

So smoothly and brilliantly played. Fantastic technique and perfect intonation shown by Hadelich but I'm not surprised, it's Hadelich after all.

I was actually there to view it, first time at an orchestra with my piano teacher, and I got to listen to him and hear a Stradivarius. One of my most cherished gifts I ever received in my life.

Hey :D Just wanted to inform you that he didn't play his Stradivari "Ex Kiesewetter" 1723 but the Guarneri del Gésu "Leduc" 1744 at the concert :)
Yes I'm fun at parties :P

This is the first time I have enjoyed a Paganini concerto. Even the best violinists seem to struggle through it so one is always on tenterhooks. This amazing guy can actually PLAY it. One comes away richer for the experience . . . . such clarity and always always perfect intonation! Stunning.

Nothing short of extraordinary! I agree with all the comments below - a modern-day Kreisler. Hadelich owns the concerto. He brings the flair of bygone years and modern day perfection together in a breathtaking performance. Fun to watch the bedazzled expression on the faces of the string section and the admiration from the other parts of the orchestra. The cadenza is a special treat all on its own. Few have commented on the match between the soloist and the orchestra. Jader Bignamini is a highly empathetic and brilliant conductor, bringing out the best in the Detroit Symphony. The conducting of the orchestral part of the Paganini #1 is often blunt, but not here. What an awesome performance.

One of the reasons I like this version is that the link can be copied to my app and so I can cycle it over and over again. Oh how I love the sweet, warm and full sound flowing from Augustin’s magic hands!

This is fully in tune with Kogan, Francescatti, Heifetz, Ricci and the like. It could be Kogan who played this piece, it sounds so familiar - incredible. Alike the long-forgotten talent Ossy Renardi.
    In one word: Brilliant!

What a beautiful performance. I don't remember having heard this concerto played with such a neat and warm sound, but even more impressive is the passionate phrasing and Paganini's cantilena. Not just an amazing virtuoso but a true musical genius.
Looking forward to listen to you Maestro Hadelich in Sydney this June
