Maybe grumpy middle age glaswegians aren't the first port of call for relief of any kind

She said the responsibility to pay artists came from the record labels tbf, not that it needed to come from some social movement
think the point is more that it would take a social movement for that to happen

@@albertcumin I think it’s a start saying this infront of all of the execs at the Grammys on live tv, it’s started a conversation about it and they’re already doing targeted articles about her which makes them look even worse

Limmy has said the words ‘Chappell Roan’, what a time eh? 2025
here we are
Spotify isn't the problem - anyone boycotting Spotify is missing the point entirely.
Chappell targeted the real problem in her speech: she didn't direct it at Spotify she directed it at labels.
Artists weren't paid before Spotify existed either. Record labels were. The reason Spotify don't pay artists is because Big 3 labels have negotiated contracts with Spotify to set prices in return for Spotify getting access to their back catalog of pre-Spotify releases.
If you buy CDs or records from large labels, you're funding the companies that set up the system Spotify adheres to. If you switch from Spotify to Apple/TH-cam/Tidal you're switching to a service that has the same contracts in place with UMG, Sony & WMG. It's the "cost of doing business" as a streaming platform - it's inescapable if you want "legal" access to Big-3 artists.
If you want to boycott something, go use Pirate Bay for all Big-3 artists. Otherwise, just go sponsor your fave indie artists directly on Bandcamp & keep using Spotify.
Spot on. A convenient “boogie-man” for the majors, whilst they all have stakes in its success.
Why not switch over to Bandcamp altogether?
@@RonanS88 The operative qualifier here was "access to Big-3 artists".
Also, if it's important to you, Limmy talked quite a lot about convenience. If that's what you're looking for, there's really no good options at all (Bandcamp is great, but it's not quite at that level of ease-of-use compared to the big streaming platforms).
Otherwise, yes, use Bandcamp!
My general point is that boycotting Spotify benefits noone if you move to another medium that supports the Big 3 (buying CDs, Vinyl, Apple, TH-cam, Tidal, etc.).
@RonanS88 Loads of stuff isn't on there.
She's not talking to us, she's talking to the record company executives
What happened instead of her being listened to was hateful people screaming online about her being "Woke" and demanding that she personally should pay for health insurance for these artists, if she thought it was such a big deal.
She has a good point about how the industry grows talent, new artists can be signed and barely afford to live unless they are already wealthy or a nepo baby, that's why so many big artists are shit these days

I'm from her area, late last year she came and played here as a big star. At the time she was drawing ire from the media for voicing her positions, and so i take it she's genuine for not backing down despite backlash etc. Unfortunately I doubt what she's said will change much of anything since capitalism subsumes criticisms of itself and all that nonsense
🤮
Ok
aye?
I think apathy is the real problem. Limmy is making so much sense but I just worry that too many people don't care.
Loving Limmy's Orb t-shirt
What is left unsaid, is that Chappel dealt with mental health issues as a young person, so a lack of basic health could be the difference between a record company seeing a profit in their investment, or watching as their investment flames out due to a preventable health issue.
Enjoyed this. Good stuff Limmy 👏
Cue montage of me standing in front of a chalkboard and still coming up with nowt.
People need to be reminded that Spotify etc isn't then paying for music, but for the ease of use. If you value an artist and they're not a millionaire then you should support them.
I know what you're saying, but as a trade unionist, I feel you're missing the point completely. She's not asking you to do anything at all. Artists are workers, too, and she's criticising employers (labels) in her industry. You've turned it into some woke personal bullshit, and that's not what it is. It takes guts to do what Roan did, in a setting where you're meant to just gush and act "grateful" and thank a bunch of wankers who only helped you out of self-interest. This is about the oldest struggle in the book - workers against capitalist employers. I'm a bit disappointed that you don't get that. Roan is highlighting something valuable that people - including you, obv - forget or aren't aware of... If your art is your only form of income, you are a worker. But unlike with teachers, train drivers etc, artists don't get ANY employent benefits, because there's a toxic assumption that you have to be simply "grateful" that you are selling your music. It's bullshit, and it's wrong, and this has always affected young female artists, working class artists and black artists the most, because they're caught when they're pretty naive about the whole thing, and don't know anyone in the industry for advice, and they end up signing insane contracts that screw them over. Oh and btw, she's basically dressed as Kate Bush, who took control over her own music and production, and only releases music through her own record label now. She's in control of the means of production in the case of her music, so she doesn't have dress like some label tells her to dress, or lose weight when they tell her to.
You're absolutely right and I don't really see why limmy doesn't see it either
As someone who's consumed Limmy content for years, he's just a narcissist that doesn't understand much of the world outside himself. That's what makes him funny, but no one should take his opinions seriously.
You shouldn’t take Limmy’s rants and opinions seriously.
Everything you just said is completely correct. But I think you're the one missing the point.
Regardless of what she said, how important or valid it is, the question Limmy is asking is "what will this do to change anything?".
And no-one in his chat or in this comments section has been able to answer that.
I hope you used a keyboard to write that.
Best episode of Surprise Surprise ever.
Ah for the wholesome earthiness of home taping
Limmy is correct! So easy to be lazy and demoralised and not do the things we know we ought to be doing! Which is why we need to figure out how to reward people for doing the right thing and make it as easy as possible!

Chappell Roan is an area in Glasgow, isn't it.
Chappell Roan is a legend.
It's nice that you're learning to use words - one of these days you'll understand their meaning.
I think the best solution for all of this is just to buy the CD, or the digital dowload and just, own it. MP3 players still exist and most of them still work. You can play shit through your phone without spotify or apple music or Tidal etc. It's always important for big artists to use their platform to try for change but yeah it's obviously not the ultimate solution. Spotify has built a new consumer culture that ultimately needs to change and the only people who can do that is us. I stopeed paying for Spotify 3 months ago and started using my iPod again, literally nothing changed, if anything it was more convenient.
Unless she starts fighting with her lable legally, yeah one speech in't gonna do much.
Also just cause I'm an annoying 24 yr old, she was using american slang and she got the message acroos effectively so I'm too peeved on that point.
She'd never pursue legal action as they'd likely crush her. Good on her for speaking out though, plenty of other artists have done the same and not suffered, but nothing was ever done about it.
Limmy trying to get to the anti life equation
i think the media might be the closest to having that equation worked out.

Certain people in charge have spent hundreds of years demoralising the average person into complete apathy.
Chappell Roan sounds like a minor Game of Thrones character or something.
Some places o the east coast we would be thinking somebody was needing their churches gutters to be cleaned with a name like that.
The minor Game of Thrones characters cast very long shadows
Makes sense since it’s her stage name aha
There used to be housing for artists and help because 90% have always been poor as f**k. Everyone just assumes these artists have got Metallica money so there is a lack of sympathy too sadly.

Meander on, not getting to the point, for up to 9 minutes. Definitely, not scripted.
You can also drink from a glass or cup of water because you're not jogging.
That corporate alt look tells me she's a numpty but she does speak on behalf of the pay rights of narcissistic artists. This confuses me.
i feel like ive read academic papers with this kind of abstract equation thing, but its usually a paper that no one reads other than other academics trying to finish their dissertation. i bet loads of these equations exist but are behind a paywall for academics. then it a question of who is astute enough to take the equation seriously and share it with the world enough to the point it becomes viral
At this point the marketing campaign for these artists includes this type of grandstanding.
I don't think it was marketing at all. She was speaking straight from the heart, and she looked very nervous.
We live in a society where people speaking out gets labelled as something 😂
What is grandstanding? Should we all be quiet and get on with our lives
They must be pretty shite then if she got dropped from her record label 4 years ago
She's on stage pontificating about equal pay, after offering a nail artist 'exposure' in lieu of pay for her work two days previously.

Collective action is the only solution. Stop making music (or release it for free) until the record companies come to the table with a better deal. Blue collar workers figured this out a long time ago.
You're right, music artists should unionize just like actors and writers have! Then they will be able to more effectively make positive change within their industry 💗

Chappell Roan should work for free.
She did for years; she was dropped by her label in 2020 and had to work as an independent artist funding herself working minimum wage jobs for years before she put out her debut album in 2023. I'm glad she is advocating for other artists and change in the industry 💗

More than 20 years ago
I said streaming (for free) was never gonna work. It was blindingly obvious but every greedy twat just thought “yes, free music“ without thinking about the consequences (bands/acts not being paid to make a living and therefore only folk with expendable money being able to afford to make music). I can’t stand Metallica but they were the only ones saying the same thing and they got slagged off and accused of being greedy
