Great recipe. Pretty close to my Moms. Sauce, of course needs to simmer for at least 3 hours to slow cook the tomatoes until sweet, but ingredients are spot on. Dear John, we absolutely love you - the whole family sits mesmerised watching your recipes. I need to be blunt this time. This is not the actual original lasagna recipe, and it could easily become so with a few little changes. First, the Italian herbs are not EVER going into the tomato sauce. Proper meat sauce for pasta (lasagna is pasta), is made with garlic and/or onion, carrot and celery, which are browned in olive oil, then you add the meat (beef and pork are great) and just then you add the tomato sauce with just a tiny bit of tomato paste. Secondly, the ricotta with egg is unheard of - please use bechamel instead, you will be much happier. Parsley is not necessary, oregano is not necessary, just add a few leaves of fresh basil when the sauce is ready. We are telling you this with all the love that we can muster. If you ever come to Florence, we will be so delighted to show you around and eat with you. Ciao, buon appetito.
We all decided to make a dish this year instead of showing up and asking one mom to do everything (our men are not good cooks) This is mine, just like mine but I love your take.
This looks great. I love that you teach about origins, etc instead of just instructions. I like instructions but it sort of juices it up a little when you add some food trivia/history.
Your recipes are the only ones I make without doubting their ingredients and flavor! I would like to see a recipe for a picanha barbecue (top sirloin cap), or in spanish "barbacoa de picaña"🤤
I go big when I do my lasagna, I don't do the chop everything into mince. It still looks great. Cooking the ground beef separate from the sausage is a good idea too. So you can drain any grease. Also adding some olive oil to the boil will help keep the pasta from sticking. I love the egg in the ricotta. I will be trying that one. Very cool watching how others put it together. The next dish I want to master is Halupki.
I made this today, it's in the oven right now. The meat sauce is excellent. I can't wait to taste the final product. I used six cloves of garlic, no lemon zest but maybe next time.
MADE IT: I used what I had on hand (with the exception of the Ricotta). I didn’t follow the measurements because I made a larger version to feed 6 adult men plus 3 young boys, plus myself. It turned out okay but lacked a considerable amount of flavor despite the fact that I fried the paste plus used a popular brand of jarred pasta sauce. I only had ground beef and for some reason I accidentally bought “no boil” lasagna noodles a while ago, which I didn’t even know existed but they worked despite my hesitation using them! I added diced green peppers with the onions & garlic mixture, a splash of red wine and I also added several other dried spices too (oregano, basil, thyme, onion powder and garlic salt ). In hindsight, I would have skipped the sugar because the jarred sauce was sweet enough. In addition, I added grated parm to the ricotta mixture plus black pepper. When layering, I added shredded mozzarella on top of each layer of ricotta as well as to the top. I baked @ 425 for 30 minutes covered, then another 15 minutes uncovered and broiled for 5 minutes to brown top. Served with a cranberry garden salad with feta, English cucumbers, shredded carrots & red onion. Toasted garlic bread to finalize the complete meal and poured the red wine for the adults. Everybody was happy with it but they did say it needed more flavor next time!!! UGH - not sure what else I could have thrown at it…..maybe I’ll try mixing the meats???
Excellent job on the recipe and video. Definitely going to give this a try. Normally I have been doing eggplant instead of Lasagna noodles as I find the meal doesn't sit so heavy but after watching your video it makes me want Lasagna noodles again. Thanks for a great video.
Very good video. My complements to whoever was managing the cameras; the angles were great and it was easy to see what was going on. I appreciate the closeups.
Planning to make a lasagna this weekend, just now learned you need Italian sausage AND ground chuck (before when I made them it was either or). Thanks for the recipe advice. Making a lasagna is quite a choir, but fun.
i love all your recipes. I follow all the instructions and they came up perfect. thank you so much for making my life easier. I am hooked to your dinner rolls. I do not buy bread anymore.
This was a great recipe for a starter like myself. Only thing I would do differently next time is to strain the ricotta before adding anything because my ricotta was a lot more thin than his and the lasagna came out a little too watery.
You are like a man after my food tasting buds because of all the garlic you put into your recipes. In fact sometimes there will be chunks of garlic in my recipes. YUM!
Haven't made lasagna in a long time, I'll have to get on that. I like your little food history bits. When I was teaching, I tried to add some fun facts to the demo, one of the favs was why is 13 rolls etc a baker's dozen.
You make the sauce and ricotta just like my mother did! Her family was from a town not far from Naples. actually, she grated parmesan into the ricotta, and mozzarella into the layers as well. Great job!

I made this today, it's in the oven right now. The meat sauce is excellent. I can't wait to taste the final product. I used six cloves of garlic, no lemon zest but maybe next time.
This is the best Lasagna I have ever made. I wish I could post a photo of it. The italian sausage is so flavorful and just the right amount.
Thank you for this wonderful recipe! I usually substitute honey for powdered sugar; it adds some complexity to your sauce ! 🙂
My brother just gave me stuff to make a lasagna, I’ve never made one before!!! This helped me so much!!!!
Just made this last night!!! Best lasagna ever man!!!!
Love your energy and vibe😇🔥
This guy gets me pumped to cook he puts me in a good mood !
I love that every time I watch one of your videos, I learn something new! Thanks John ❤
Nice to see you feel the same way about garlic as I do 🤣 I always use several cloves when a recipe asks for three.
This was a great recipe for a starter like myself. Only thing I would do differently next time is to strain the ricotta before adding anything because my ricotta was a lot more thin than his and the lasagna came out a little too watery.
I’m literally making your lasagna right now and the meat sauce is so good I’m eating it by itself 😅 thank you so much!
You are like a man after my food tasting buds because of all the garlic you put into your recipes. In fact sometimes there will be chunks of garlic in my recipes. YUM!
I never knew you were meant to boil the pasta before assembling, my world has officially been rocked
This was delicious! Thank you.
Hello, I made this today for my husband. So delicious! 👏 Bravo! Thank you.
i use a very small splash of red wine vinegar to brighten up the sauce, sparingly as it can overpower.
thank you for the vid! 👍
Thank you for sharing I have been looking for good lasagna recipe and now I have one I will give this a try😊
Made this for my family this evening. Fantastic!!! Thanks for the amazing recipe!
Haven't made lasagna in a long time, I'll have to get on that. I like your little food history bits. When I was teaching, I tried to add some fun facts to the demo, one of the favs was why is 13 rolls etc a baker's dozen.
Thank you John!! The lemon zest was a game changer.
You make the sauce and ricotta just like my mother did! Her family was from a town not far from Naples. actually, she grated parmesan into the ricotta, and mozzarella into the layers as well. Great job!
That handle on the pasta pot is such a great idea!
I COULD NOT believe you made the Lasagna without Bechamel sauce. It looks delicious 😋 and I will try it.
So far after starting to learn how to cook lasagna is the first meal im struggling with. Hopefully this tutorial will help me make a good lasagna!

I used your recipe. But without sausage. It was delicious. Thank you for your amazing recipe!
Try replacing the pork sausage with soy chorizo from Trader Joe’s.
