In addition to the recipe box (and since you mentioned in a previous video that you were able to get letters but boxes were being held back by your postal service), I sent a separate envelope with some more recipe stuff. I work in the movie industry so making custom "props" including artwork is part of my job. Hope Atlanta is very successful in her endeavors!

A traditional Thanksgiving remembrance reason: The Native Americans kept some of the first European Pilgrims from starvation, during their first American Winter, c.1621. Nowadays, America marks the Last Thursday of November as a day to commemorate and celebrate all manner of thoughtfulness, thankfulness, gratefulness, gratitude, love, hope, and togetherness. From San Diego, California; I send you all Love, Hope, and Joy.

Thanksgiving is actually explained in some textbooks as a holiday that the pilgrims thanked the Indians for saving their lives. It was not that. It did happen, but the first Thanksgiving was a pious expression of gratitude, from the pilgrims, to God for their survival, and all that was part of it.

Thanksgiving was basically built around a story about one of the first set of colonist here in America, known as the "Pilgrims" of Plymouth Colony (Massechucets). The holidy was celebrate in various forms until President LIncoln made it a national holiday and set the date to the 4th Thursday in November. The basics of the Meal are Turkey with stuffing (Sage or Cornbread, or Sausage, or Oyster....or any kind you might like), Mashed Potatoes, Green Bean Casserole, Candied Sweet Potatoe (eating with the meal as one of the savories, although it will be quiet sweet), Cranberry Sauce, and Gravy. Various other seasonal vegetables (Squash, corn, Turnips) may fill out your families table, and then becasue America is a land of imigrants, lots of worldwide regional foods end up on certain ethnicities tables. I know lots of italian families that will also serve a lasagna with the dinner and serve up a full antipasta platter before the meal. As long as there are different families there willbe differnt opinions on what is the perfect Thanksgiving meal.

    • @daniellestevenson7754
      @daniellestevenson7754 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Exactly!
Also, usually some form of bread as well, either dinner rolls or biscuits (American style not English style). The time eaten also varies by when the whole family can be together. And most times extended family eat together also, if that is doable for the families involved. If people are in an area that they are away from family, or they don't have family, then they are invited to eat with friends- it is most often a fairly large group meal, because that's how it was originally. Although not everyone can do that, so it isn't always that way.

So for Thanksgiving in America, many people make candied yams (sweet potatoes) as a side dish. Here is a southern soul food candied yam recipe.
    Ingredients
    5 medium sized yams
    8 tbsp salted butter
    1 tsp ground cinnamon
    1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
    1/4 tsp ground clove
    1/4 tsp ground ginger
    1 cup granulated sugar
    1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tbsp pure vanilla extract not imitation
    Instructions
    1.) Preheat the oven to 350 F.
    2.) Wash the yams.
3.)Peel, then chop the yams ( make sure that they are about 1/2 inch thick.)
4.) Place the yams into a 9x13 bake dish.
5.) Place the butter into a medium sized pot, then melt it over medium heat.
6.) Once the butter is melted, sprinkle in the white & brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground ginger, and ground clove.
7.) Turn the stove off, mix the ingredients, then add in the vanilla extract.
8.) Pour the candied mixture over the yams, and try to coat all the yams with the candied mixture.
9.) Next, cover the bake dish with foil, then bake the yams in the oven for 30 minutes.
10.) Remove the yams from the oven, and baste them with the candied mixture.
11.) Cover the yams, and bake them for another 15-20 minutes.
12.) Remove the yams from the oven, and let them sit for about 10 minutes before serving.
    13.) Enjoy

I've the energy you guys put out in your videos...... it's so refreshing. Atlanta has my mad respect wanting to learn her way around a kitchen and use it functionally...... that is most impressive. I love that you all spotlight things you get in the mail so each person of your family can speak about a certain characteristic that is in "their box", and it seems to reflect the person's interest. Really great stuff.

The first Thanksgiving was 4 to 6 days long, with the fruits of their (Plymouth Colony) harvest set out to share with the Indians who helped them survive their first year when there was no time to plant crops and they quickly ran out of the supplies they brought with them. The turkey has been passed down as traditional, since it was plentiful and big enough to share. [They probably had venison, but it is not as easy to come by for most of us.] We don't truly know what else they had in the way of something cooked, so the dressing/stuffing (which varies from region to region), mashed potatoes with gravy (debate over white or brown), green beans mixed with mushroom soup and topped with canned "fried" onions/onion rings and yams (cooked as a casserole with miniature marshmallows and chopped nuts on top) and canned corn, have evolved as traditional foods [because that is what Grandma made]. You should be able to Google all and get numerous versions of everything, but you may have to alter the recipes to what ingredients you can get.

Thanksgiving with my family: Prep the turkey the night before and bake pies ahead of time. Spend all Thanksgiving morning cooking in the kitchen. We try to sit down and eat by the time football (NFL) games start.
Thanksgiving is whatever we want to make it. I'm used to having green beans, Mac 'n cheese, stuffing, potato salad, and sweet potato pie. Sometimes we've had mashed potatoes, lasagna, collard greens, rice, and apple pie. Though I prefer apple pie around Christmas.

Mint is my favorite flavor of Milano cookies/ biscuits.
Both the U.S. and Canada have Thanksgiving, but not on the same day (in fact, I think Canada's is a month earlier). They are both rooted in celebrations of and gratitude for successful and abundant harvests. My Thanksgiving menu includes turkey (slow roasted overnight), mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, green bean casserole, candied yams/ sweet potatoes, rolls, salad, and pumpkin pie. I love Thanksgiving dinner so much I once made one in the middle of summer! I can't wait to see yours and what you all think of the foods! Cheers from Colorado!

Greetings from Virginia USA. My mother LOVED Christmas. She had 3 trees. 1 for the children (her grandchildren) colored lights and fun decorations. 1 for her pleasure. It was white lights and only silver and crystal ornaments. The 3rd was what we called the ugly tree. It was a dead branch spray painted white set in concrete in a galvanized pail. There was a competion each year for the ugliest decoration. That actually got a little fierce. You are a beautiful family and I enjoy your vids. Thank you!!!!
