After that first cycle where you skip the first attack, your clicks have to be instant to the next tile or else he’ll keep catching you. You should be ready to click the next tile as soon as you attack. Hesitating on the tiles even a little bit can mess up the cycle.

You’re probably right sir, it’s probably to do with my ping as well, but I do get a few solid kills in per trip consistently and once in awhile 10+
