I remember when CL gained weight because of her antidepressants but she got body shamed so badly that she said she’ll stop using them to lose weight. 💀I’m over people thinking they know what’s good for someone like a persons weight somehow matter more than their actual health, mental and physical.
at the same time every public appearance of hers when she fattened up was wearing a corset or a very large coat even on live performances she wouldn't take it off supposedly to hide her physique
When people say that "society's standards are toxic" who exactly is society? YES. That's right WE ARE. Let's just admit it, instead of acting like society is some disgusting physical thing that we have no control over. Society is us.
same happened to Lana Del Rey. Ever since she has gained weight and clearly still healthy, people have said her style is a mess/basic/nothing special now -when her style has never changed. it shows the obsession people have over celebrities bodies and its sad to see.
I remember seeing people say that Taylor Swift has lost her sense of style, and she 'dresses old' somehow. But when she was wearing vintage outfits years ago they called her a style icon. Makes me wonder if it's literally just because she was skinnier, cus she doesn't dress that much different now as she did then.
Yeah it seems like it could be the case. There must be some ppl who just mean that she doesn’t dress like a gen z(which is not really what she needs to be dressing as anyway tbh), but ppl just obsessing over ppl being thin is probably the biggest group
@@sofypi7493 she tends to switch up looks depending on the albums she releases hence all of her eras & diff styles plus shes 30 cant expect her to dress the same all the time you know
The celebrities which we blame so much for messing with our perception of beauty are actually just meeting a popular demand in the market - if we keep allowing ourselves to be fed with the concept of an 'ideal body' then there will always be celebrities that rise to the demand...
Yeah, I feel like the more we become aware of these patterns and the more we consciously adjust - the better we will be overall to ourselves and others
its one of those things i feel helpless, like we cant change cause the whole system is rigged but im hopeful a future like yous have in mind will come to light.
I’m not really on twitter and i didn’t notice she had gained weight, i only saw that inerview with jessi…..damn that’s awful. Tail was an AMAZING song and SUCH a good concept, personally i loved it!
Tail is still my favourite era, the song is a banger, her choreography was incredible and the vibes absolutely perfect and they paid her dust. I didn't think about it being bc she wasn't mega skinny but it makes sense.
I became a fan of her after watching Tail. I hope people would stop thinking that beauty should determined by weight cause Sunmi is gorgeous as she is and at any weight she'll be.
Stans who say "health is the priority, please don't skip meals please eat well etc etc" are the same ones who also say "omg waist so snatched, abs so defined, etc etc". Like I'm sorry if this sounds harsh but I genuinely believe those two statements cannot coexist. This might be a generalisation, and there definitely will be exceptions, but when you say the latter phrase you're basically complimenting the same unhealthy things you're speaking against! Case in point: FMR era. Irene mentioned that nobody in RV were eating proper meals, only salads and fruits. Everyone goes, oh my god, that's so horrible!!! And immediately afterwards I saw a tweet complimenting seulgi's snatched waist getting like 30k likes. Can we please step back and think about what that means? You can't speak up against something but still admire the results of the idols who are doing the exact same things. And don't come at me with the fast metabolism active lifestyle excuse: Irene literally disproved that with that statement. Similarly, Taeyong once bubbled that he has a photoshoot the next day, and so he can only eat one meal that day. And he was wondering when he should eat it. It was said so casually, because that's the norm in the industry. People were replying to it with concern but I'm a 100% sure the very same people complimented his figure when that photoshoot came out. (I'm unsure which one it would've been as I don't closely follow 127) I'd also like to mention a fact that a lot of stans are unaware of, and that is that to get those clean cut defined abs you kind of... Have to not really eat or drink much. A lot of actors in superhero movies have spoken out about this as well. I think we all should just step back and analyse the kind of compliments we like to give, and where they are coming from, and why we feel compelled to say such things. Thank you so much for making this video as it's a topic I rarely see addressed beyond a surface level, and definitely never with this level of awareness.
Yeah I feel like there are many ways of complimenting someone without it being something that is extremely conditional like super defined abs. Of course ppl like being complimented, and you never know how you affect others exactly, but the real support in terms of time or money is always going to speak louder. If we all say that they should be healthy but not pay attention to their work when they are - were definitely the problem here, right? You reminded me of so many more situations like this Omg I remember both rv and taeyong
true, this is very true. I also thought about that. These celebrities don't just get abs and muscles or a skinny waist out of nowhere. Even Robbert Pattinson talked about 'counting sips of water' for his role in Batman.
My mother is a radiologist and has been seeing lots of women in their 30's come in because they fall over and break their bones or fracture them. If you starved yourself while and teen and before you fully developed you just do not have the bone density you need and it will continue to dietriate.Lots of young women in New Zealand now have heart problems and weak bones due to starving themselves to be skinny as teens or young adults. The damage to one's health is irreversible
It's so easy to blame the industry (kpop industry, Hollywood, etc.) but it's actually a symbiotic relationship, we respond to what it's sold to us and the media feeds off of our response. It's a cycle, and more often than not not a possitive one. Sunmi's words about her fans prefering her body to look a certain way have been told by so many other artists too, and it's just concerning how some people tell this to their faces. The standards and expectations are put there not only by the industry but by the fans and the general public too. We love to say every body is beautiful and then praise someone at an specific time for having "perfect body proportions", restricting them to that image, whether we mean it or not. It's one thing to expect artists you like and look up to to be good people and be disappointed if they're not, but it's something else to demand them to look at certain way and make it a condition of your support/love. Did you really like them in the first place if that's the case? Another thing that also happens it's that at some point we stop seeing artists as people, and with their (public) images being such a huge part of their job the lines between product and human blur in the eyes of many. But we as public, as fans, are not supposed to consumme them, but their music/movies/art. They're not the same. Also, parasocial relationships are a Thing, an artist being open and sharing stuff with their fans should not be taken as permission to demand certain things from them or start thinking they're our friends. Boundaries are healthy and are good, and I feel like these days they've become blurrier than ever. Also, it's interesting that you mentioned the natural decrease of natural promotion from these kind of accounts that aren't managed by fans (aesthetic, fashion accounts, etc) when an artist's body changes because I think that especially in these cases, coming from people that aren't invested in them on a personal level but are generally aware/interested, some times it's not even rejection but dismissal, it's not always open conscious opposittion to the new body image but the total disregard of this person and whatever new thing they're bringing with them because of it - and I don't know which one is worse. But both send the same message. Lastly, you look so good as a redhead!!! Been loving seeing you with so many different styles but this color suits you so much!! I could see the Sunmi inspiration (?) behind your look and I love it!!!
yeah I definitely agree! there's definitely more of a dismissal going on when it's with accounts that are not ran by fans, and it contributes SO much. and thank you! I really like this colour on me too, and I think you're the first one who noticed that I went for a sunmi inspired look (coincidentally most of my dresses are very heart burn, I think it's bc sunmi went for dresses with a lot of jellyfish ruffles, and I love those haha)
Also, I know people don't want to talk about this because it's so normalized, but some people consider skin without make-up unormal. People expect people to have clear skin because of filters and makeup on social media.
This is so true. And being on kpop tik tok really shows how the fans view weight. Sometimes they literally ignore how they influence their faves when it comes to weight🙁
Is not a coincidence, I'm pretty sure Demi Lovato had issues with ed because of the image of having to be a sexy woman in music and the success it comes with that. You can get a man in jeans and not even a guitar singing and all people are in awe. But women have to wear gliterry dreses, dance a little and dance WELL, wear bodysuits, etc etc
I'm so glad Taylor Swift didn't sugarcoat the truth. She didn't say I FASTED. She said, "...starve a little bit. Just stop eating." Honest woman. Awesome. :) Anyway, YOUR VIDEOS ARE ALWAYS SO COOL!!! Edit: The Cher comment at the end was neat xD Your editing skills are ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
It's the same for dua lipa she had a "glow up" and became all the craz. Yeah she put out good song but the stage are full of comment saying She sooo fine and looking much better. As If no one buillied her to learn to dance and to lose Weight. I remember all the comment left after her concert with black pink were comparing them and saying She was huge, She was going to eat them, She a big horse. I mean 🤮🤮🤮
it's a hard pill to swallow, thank you for talking about this. it's important to think about these things, especially when in the end you are coming to a conclusion that you're part of the problem, because it's opening up a room for improvement. body image issues is a deep and complicated topic and the solutions to all these problems are so so far away from us, but the more we think and talk about it, the closer we are!! p.s. i love how your lipstick and hair match!!!
I hope that if we question ourselves specifically as to why we like or dislike someone’s work all of a sudden we might move a bit closer to it! And thank you sm🤍🤍
I am in recovery for anorexia rn. I felt such a pressure to be skinny even tho I am naturally curvy. Even now I am stressing about having curves as I have a very pronounced hourglass figure a Marilyn Monroe typ of figure. I was definitely not overweight I was the awkward middle between skinny and fat. I felt so lost with this. The skinny pictures of celebrities did not affect me but the reaction of people how they praised them and how people said how beautiful they are. While curvy woman who also had a stomach had often bad comments and were heavily criticized by people. I felt like they were also talking about me then and calling me these names and thought the things about me. The celebrities did not affect me the people who supported/ not supported the artist based on figure did. I am trying. I just hit "normal weight" but I still fall back into old patterns. Thanks for making the video as usual amazing 💕 and I love the wig!!
I think some of this also has to do with what we expect from our relationships to celebrities as consumers. Someone who is famous is supposed to fulfill some level of wish fulfillment on top of whatever it is they’re famous for. A celebrity cannot simply exist or be average because it breaks the fantasy. I’ve heard it so many times where people question “what’s so special about them?” Someone can’t just have good music or be a talented actor :/ it’s like the bar can never stop raising despite celebrities just being people too. Thank you for such a thoughtful video as always! Here’s to continuously examining our thoughts and actions. (p.s I’m obsessed with your top/dress the fabric and neckline are so pretty)
Yeah you’re definitely right, we have this tendency to make people into fantasies and then expect them to actually be like that. And thank you sm! That’s a dress I found at a vintage store , I love it sm🥹
Ive had too completely overhaul the way I approach exercise. My whole childhood, I was obsessed with wanting a flat stomach. I know it came from family - brown, immigrant families have no filter or awareness of the impact of their comments. Now I try really hard to work out because its medicine for my depression and try to remember its not about pushing myself to oblivion every time I get on the mat. I live my the notion of consistent mediocrity now, just a consistent 60% effort for my brain. I began posting my workouts on my channel, so I'd have a visual to SEE with my own eyes, that I'm getting stronger, and better at yoga/pilates and exercise isnt just about trying to be thin.
This is very true. We perpetuate beauty trends by giving them our attention, placing them on a pedestal, over emphasizing the importance of beauty, and not being proud of our individuality/uniqueness. We have this concentration on improving our body image by adhering to body trends instead of focusing on self-esteem and self-worth, which is more internal.
I think it's hard to see sometimes how we affect the culture that we consume, but maybe if we keep emphasizing it from time to time it will help create some change
@@LisaFevral That’s 100% true. It’s requires you to have to look within and I think a lot of people are scared to do so. They feel as though if they’re apart of the problem, that they don’t deserve compassion. They’ll have to admit to seeing themselves in the “enemy” aka celebs, the people they have been criticizing for so long.
thank you for talking abt this especially in regards to kpop. I usually stay off of most SNS these days but the amount of times a yt video about an idol's weight loss/gain pops up when i'm searching for something completely different (like an MV or something) is honestly scary because it would be so easy for the artists to also stumble upon them. I agree that we should just not comment on people's weight at all
The inconsistency of body image is also one of the main issues. How you are in a photo vs image vs real life is different. Body shapes go in and out of style (wtf lmao). Different countries have different standards of attractiveness. I’m 164cm and around 55-60kg (I weight myself once a month max, so it fluctuates a bit). Also curvier than the average asian. In Canada I feel average, in China I feel like a fatass, in Japan I get the odd comment here and there (though there are more positive than negative). The inconsistent trends of what essentially just boils down to lifestyle and genetics really murders people’s mental health.
yeah, the amount of weird expectations is just too high, and in each country in the world the perception of the same person changes SO MUCH it's ridiculous. but at the same time, I guess it helps to put things in perspective bc in one place you are the standard of beauty in another - you aren't, so it would make you reflect on how cruel you can be to yourself if you have that problem
5:30 If anyone ever actually said this, I'd laugh in their fucking face, because Sunmi does not know how to make bad music. That sounds like stan speak (and admittedly, it is), but Sunmi has one of the best discographies in K-Pop. Her music is always fresh and innovative. Even when she's following a trend (like she did with You can't sit with us), she still finds a way to set herself apart. Nah, some of y'all are just gonna have to come to terms with the fact that y'all are weirdos.
I did not enjoy «Tail» as much as I enjoyed «Siren» and «Gashina» and that is because it is not my type of song. And it does sonically sound different than the famous Sunmi songs, so it can actually be for the music. I did not even notice Sunmi gained weight and even of she did she looked stunning in «Tail» era, but I was not a huge fan of that song.
I think it ALL boils down to capitalism. This artists, their labels and companies in general, like you said, are going to mold themselves into what makes them the more profit. It's sad, but with influencers now, even human connection and relationships are commodities.
Aaaah I love Sunmi's Tail. The Catwoman vibes! I did notice that she gained weight back then, looked great, and now she lost weight again for Heart Burn. I was wondering why Tail wasn't streamed as much 😥
I’m sure it’s a combination of things, but the product is really good, so it must be an issue of organic promotion not happening, which is unfortunately based on superficial things
great video!!! another topic that relates to this is body neutrality. basically since there's a standard that you should love your body for what it is, is unrealistic for some people which can lead to body negativity. personally, as someone that couldn't care less about how my body looks aesthetically this is a concept that i like but i don't care enough to "identify" with it either since i feel like we're always trying to fit ourselves into these boxes but the reality is that some days i will love my body, some days i won't think about my body, and some days i might be insecure about my body, but it's all apart of being human at the end of the day :)
@@LisaFevral i feel you, being alive is a weird feeling that's both physical and mental but it doesn't feel like either it more so feels like you're a spirit inhabiting a body that inhabits earth if that makes sense... lmao im not religious tho so i don't really know
This is such an important conversation. And I think we have to accept... how do I put this... that production companies and executives & the people in charge of what gets shown/promoted in media just do not have morals. That's not to let them off the hook - they should have morals! But they don't. They just promote whatever's seen to be most popular, so they can make the most money. As the audience and as consumers, if we aren't really mindful of who we support, how we support them, and if we blindly follow trends, we unintentionally have a lot of influence on which images get successful, which images we see more of in the future. Speaking as a fat person myself I want to add a little insight into the conversation around fat celebrities. I totally agree with everything you said, so none of this is a contradicting that, but there are so many conflicting factors when it comes to 'fat representation'... in fact it's so complicated I have to write some bullet points haha Some complicated factors: ☆ Because there are so few overweight or fat women celebrities, there's this sense of disappointment when one of them drastically loses weight, because it's like we're 'losing' one of the small handful of representation we have. That's not fair on the individual celebrities who lose weight for their own reasons. Not fair at all. But it's difficult when there were like 6 fat women stretched across all the possible roles in media, and now there's 5. Like I support Adele losing weight 100% since that's what she wants, it's her health, her life, her business. It's not fair of me to demand anything different from her. But there's still a feeling of loss, because before we had one single example of an overweight woman who was a beautiful, soulful, serious, emotional singer who moved the world. And now we have none. That image is gone. It shouldn't be Adele's responsibility to fill that image. The problem is so few of us getting representation in the first place. ☆ Once someone gets successful they get access to expensive physical and mental healthcare, have easier more luxurious lifestyles, and access to all kinds of resources which could allow them to lose weight which wasn't healthy for them. Of course weight isn't always connected to health, but it is a factor for a lot of people. And of course we should be happy for these individuals getting access to care and having easier lives! But it can be difficult for the fat people watching who still lack that access... seeing that gap between rich and poor being played out in real time with such an obvious physical change, brings up difficult feelings. It's like seeing someone who had the same 'struggle' as you and represented 'people like you' and then seeing them 'disappear' into the healthy wealthy norm, and your representation disappears along with it. Of course it's not fair at all to judge someone for taking up healthcare available to them, or for being successful, being happier... these are messy feelings. And really we should be aiming those feelings at the people with the most power and money in society (which generally isn't entertainers, even the really successful ones). The problem is inequality existing in the first place. ☆ Working in the media means being surrounded by a lot of very thin, very weight-obsessed people with a lot of unhealthy weight-loss habits. There's a huge amount of pressure to conform to that in an unhealthy way. There can be a perception or worry that someone isn't losing weight in a healthy way, and that they might be giving into unhealthy weight loss culture, which then gets promoted to young audiences. Especially when people lose a lot of weight over a short period, and when it gets marketed as a 'transformation' and 'she looks so much better now' etc. ☆ Hollywood (and media in general) is still so rigid. It wants people to fit into specific 'types', into these very neat boxes which can be marketed in certain ways. It's so frustrating watching how people's careers transform after they lose weight, especially with actors who were only ever allowed to be the comedy relief side character, never the dramatic lead or the beautiful ingenue or the elegant villain or the complex antihero etc... and on the flipside, seeing how someone like Rebel Wilson was told not to lose weight because she already had her marketable niche as the 'funny fat girl'. It's so limiting. This is also a factor in the perceptions around famous people losing weight - that they did it in order to access certain roles and improve their career. Which can be seen as like... instead of fighting to break boundaries about which roles fat people are allowed to be seen in, you 'gave in' to the pressure and became thinner to get those roles, therefore confirming the idea that fat people can't get them. Again, this is completely unfair pressure to put on an individual, but it's still an issue which exists in the wider sense. ☆ Fat people have to be outstanding to even be given a chance. Lizzo has been a revelation. Adele is once in a generation. But both of them have such immense over-the-top talent it allowed them to 'shine through' their fatness. Literally the only other overweight pop singer I can think of is Meghan Trainor, but her weight was literally marketed as a comedic gimmick, that was her whole image even in her one hit song, and she's barely even overweight! Also because there's so little fat representation, there's this pressure that when a fat person occasionally breaks through we MUST support them no matter what, because what if we don't? Then the higher-ups will go "see? I told you fat people aren't marketable" and we won't get another opportunity. ANYWAY I'm so sorry for this ridiculously long comment, just venting out some thoughts your video sparked! And again, I agree with everything you said in the video, just adding some extra thoughts of my own
ok ok one more thing! As a fellow kpop fan, I just remembered once upon a time back in 2013 there was a duo called 15& marketed by JYP as a 'plus size girl group' and it was such an... example... of some things. They were actually amazing singers and their 2 singles ('Sugar' and 'Somebody') were really fun, but they were considered a flop and thus this 'experiment' of having non-skinny kpop stars was never tried again. But these girls... were slim! Slim I tell you! Just... not extremely skinny! That's the kpop version of 'plus size'. It's really worth looking up their videos, because as much as I love kpop, there are some serious issues with body image. Just like with Sunmi when she suddenly isn't seen as marketable and beautiful because she was... slightly less thin? Still underweight? I mean damn, these standards are so dangerously skewed, and as a fan I think it's important to keep talking about that. It's dangerous for people who feel pressured to stay extremely thin, and it shuts out great talent who can't attain that thinness. There's only one actually overweight kpop singer I know of, called 민선e, who has a *phenomenal* voice, but she basically hasn't been allowed a career because of her weight. She won a tv singing competition a couple of years ago, got all this applause and was totally set up for a big career, but then... no offers from big companies, no opportunities, every door closed. She's talked openly about feeling she was completely shut out of the industry because of her weight.
I definitely agree with your points! It’s true that it feels like a loss when already rare representation roster shrinks, and it is definitely bc of already existing issues. And the whole thing of supporting people bc otherwise no one else who fits in the same “category” will get a chance if the higher ups don’t see profit is honestly a whole iceberg of things to address bc it’s true for so many groups of people, unfortunately. Thank you for this comment, it’s really nice to hear your thoughts on this!
This is wild! Wonder Girls was actually the first kgroup I was ever exposed to and Sunmi was my fave from the group then so I was excited to see her on her solo career. If I’m being honest I wouldn’t say I haven’t been listening to her because of any weight fluctuations (tbh I just go through phases of listening to kpop to not at all) but I feel so upset for her that she had to go from all these weight fluctuations for her fans which is really hard on your body. It’s really shitty because as it is I feel like pop stars don’t really have support from anyone really when they decide to not be as small as possible.
ALSO! Outside of the whole Sunmi thing. I’ve dealt with a lot of body issues and a big part of that comes from when I first lost a lot of weight I was able to see how differently i was treated by people. People were nicer to me, they went out of their way for me, I had people who were attracted to me etc. all things that I hadn’t had before. When that happens, you start to notice how fickle people can be when your weight ultimately fluctuates (which it does for everyone) and you’re just trying to chase that feeling that you had before and stay in that area of grace but it’s unattainable and it’s not practical or functional and even though I’m saying this online, I know it will still be hard in practice.
It was just so strange to see that after pestering her for so long ppl were not giving her work as much attention all of a sudden. It’s just so blatant that it’s a bit shocking
And yeah, the pressure to keep doing what people seem to respond well to is so heavy, even if you withstand it. And it’s especially grating if it’s about something superficial like looks
@@LisaFevral I feel like you’re so right because the last video I saw is her that popped up on my feed was the 1/6th video and that was the last one I remember seeing. I remember being excited because I’m not a hardcore kpop fan so I have a few faves that I check in on every now and then so I thought that was her new comeback and didn’t even realize she had ones before that because the way TH-cam just wasn’t having them pop up on my feed (most likely because those videos weren’t as popular for whatever reason)
@@LisaFevral exactly. I’ve been in a stage of just living in my body basically and doing what feels right/trying to listen to it and not break it and it’s really interesting to see the sudden lack of physical appeal i seem to have with people. I’m still trying to do what I can for myself and not for anyone else but it’s hard. I deleted all my social media other than TH-cam and Snapchat basically just to stop myself from doom scrolling and comparing myself to others. I also think that it’s just assumed that only younger people feel this way but I was just talking to my professor and she was telling me about how she really needs to get off of social media because it’s been really bad for her view on her own body and that the things that used to work for her when losing weight don’t anymore and how it just further causes her to spiral. It’s terrifying truly, I really am glad you talk about a lot of these things especially how it pertains to pop culture. It just makes it relatable and something everyone can understand, I really appreciate it.
When you brought up people saying Sunmi's music was "not hitting the same" when she was at a slightly higher weight I legit laughed because Pporappippam and Tail SLAP what are they even talking about?
Tuning in while I wash the dishes Edit: "the girl jumps around on stage with a flute"😂😂😂 true though. As someone who doesn't really social anymore I feel it's not really in my power but I completely understand what you mean. However, there are some thoughts and behaviours made by other people that we just can't control, example: the thinspo thing is still continuing on tumblr and one day I think last year I was looking through a tag for one of my fav youtubers and she was someone's "thinspo". She literally said one time that she was underweight because of something she had gone through and couldn't really process because she wanted to forget about it, she has since become SLIGHTLY less thin and says she feels healthy but people are using her body to punish themselves into a figure they may not be able to attain genetically. It's scary because generally most of her following seems to want to _be_ her (have her life which is a pretty chill one) more than they want to support her? Anyway what I'm saying is, some people support artists for the wrong reasons and sadly once you hit a specific profit margin, you can't afford to lose that even if you as an individual (artist) feel content -the people running your brand/business side will want the numbers to stay up (so e.g. Rebel in this video). We can't control people :/ BUT thank you for sharing this because maybe some people don't realise the extent their words and actions have.
Omg yes those accounts are on Twitter everywhere too, it’s honestly so messed up bc they don’t use pictures of people who would be ok with that either, so it’s just a whole mess overall
@@LisaFevral EXAAACTLY like it's scary that you can be a driving force for something distructive without trying :/ but I think it's the remaining anonymous thing like: people who withdraw their support are just a statistic to execs so we don't even know who to ✨calmly ask✨ to get it together and not promote literal body image issues
yeah, exactly! I just hope that if we ask ourselves why we like something more often, it will slow down the automatic effects of people spreading ideas about artists(like "ooh, they fell off" when they didn't, but rather just lost/gained weight)
16:55 so true!!!! In clothes sizing, S looks great, L is recognizable, but if you're a size M - you live in a grey zone of looking frumpy and dumpy which is weird😭😭😭
I love to hear it. Subbed ❤ Being self-aware, and owning our influence is so important, but people rarely feel responsible for this kinda of thing... perhaps because they don't realise they have that power, however small.
Here I leave more examples of celebrities with this type of issues: Jinkx Monsoon (winner of rupauls drag race season 5) has commented that since he left the program in 2012 fans have criticized him more than once for having gained weight although this factor does not affect her work as a singer and actress. C.Tangana (Spanish singer) in one of his BTS videos from his latest album, he comments on how he is all the time aware of his body and staying in shape to maintain his image since due to his genetics he is prone to gain fat easily.
The only thing that can counter most the problems we face with social media is not interacting. People will continue to talk and interact with harmful content, which in some cases awareness is good, but in other situations, ignoring the content and not giving it views is one thing that will stop the content from garnering attention- the thing companies want most from people at the moment.
I think so too, but unfortunately so many people get attention for the wrong reasons... sometimes I can't even figure out who would be interested in the stuff that some ppl make(like really bad family prank channels)
Now that I'm fully recovered, I had to acknowledge the reason I was there, so basically quitting kpop helped me A LOT. Like there's not much different on a kpop idol page than the ED forums I used to be on 💀 Idols literally told you HOW to be underwight. I understand if my friends like them, I do still listening some SONGS. I just CANT stand them and I dont care about fans justifying them.
This is a bit of a difficult topic to approach but id like to say, i fully agree that consumers mindset is like most of it, but beauty standards have always and will always exist. Of course the trendy stuff will sell more, thats such a given. I think that if artists want their fans to stop confusing on their appearance, they also need to stop leaning on that for sales, with the risk of them dropping. Im saying this but its truly hard to do, and money gets in the way, but its why i really admire artists like adele! Anyway, the masses have a certain way of thinking, but as individuals we can make decisions that benefit us, is what im trying to say. I just wish that not everything was about the freaking trends.. Thank u for this video, each and every one of those help shed light on this really fragile topic! Change can't come if we aren't aware of the problem
Yeah, I think that also not everyone can be adele bc the music industry would be very bland visually, bc adele doesn’t have high concepts for her releases. It works really well for her, but there’s only so many people who can do it without over saturating the market. I do think that great visuals do not equate body focused images though
@@LisaFevral i mean probably. We can DEFINITELY appreciate visuals without judging them. but idk I feel like whatever is trendy will always sell more. I wish people admired whatever resonated with them personally rather than whatever will make them fit in. I feel like thats the only way to eliminate stereotypes. But maybe im taking it to a different conversation lol
I think so too, but sometimes we can feel like we like something bc it has been introduced to us so many times in different forms, or was promoted in one way or another. I think we can be influenced if placed in specific environments, but that's up for debate haha
@@LisaFevral rightt its hard to tell thw difference between what you truly like and what you were told you do. There's a bunch of things that come into play🍃
It was always so weird to me that, when talking about social problems, youtubers never fail to mention that they don't want to, and that we shouldn't also, blame individual people, but 'the X culture'. But we're a part of that!! It feels like they talk to talk. Just putting the blame on the mysterious 'dieting culture' or whatever. Call out the people who contribute to it, too. It didn't appear out of nowhere and it continues to appear because it sells.
People just love to blame celebrities for pushing unhealthy standards, like they’re invulnerable to insecurities or health issues themselves. If they’re starving themselves, having procedures done and working out 7 days a week is not because because they think it’s fun, it’s also hard for them but they do it as is part of their job, specially for women but also men. Part of a celebrity job is to look hot according to the fashionable standards in DEMAND, demand by the public and executives who give them work. If it’s awful for us that aren’t expose to so many people and that our livelihood don’t depend on it, then imagine the pressure when your work depends on it and they’re are millions and thousands of people telling on your body.
I've seen videos occasionally on my feed that compare these celebrities before and after (no clue why, I always ignore them! I thought the yt algorithm was smarter than this bro) and it's so strange! Because, it's not the fans business in the first place y'know?? Btw, loving the look! That colour looks fantastic on you! haha! 🤭💞
i'm so soso!! glad you spoke about this and moreso that you decided to use sunmi as one of your case studies here because just your opening made so many thoughts I've had ruminating in my head since she began teasing heart burn finally click. I've been into k-pop for long while and I agree that while this type of behavior from fans/consumers is so fucking prevalent both in Korea and pretty much everywhere else. I've seen so many people say Sunmi finally "stopped flopping" with this release and I just couldn't understand why they would say that when the quality of her music has never been bad. yeah, she had that questionable rap during you can't sit with us, but otherwise the song was just great and the rest of the mini album fantastic. tail, which was released when she looked possibly her biggest (which was still very thin btw!!!) didn't do nearly as well despite it being fucking incredible! everything down to the chore was good and on-par with all her greatest hits. earlier this year she released oh sorry ya in partnership with spotify but the song didn't get much attention either. though I can somewhat understand that one because fans were really upset with her for announcing plans to do nfts. but the song is still as good heart burn, if not even better. it's sexy and gritty and artistic, just like all her other releases, but it never got its flowers and considering how fast kpop fans move on i doubt it ever will. heart burn in comparison is still doing really good, which is great! i love that for her, but i want to know what changed between oh sorry ya and heart burn that made fans suddenly forget they were upset with her for the nfts? because so far the only answer i can come up is her weight. and her hair, i guess. (she does look so so pretty with orange hair, i hope she does this look again later on.) so many other artists often say they kind of dread the release of new music/shooting movies because they know they're going to be put on diets and made to lose weight. weight that oftentimes isn't even inconvinincing them in any way, it just makes them less slim. it's not even something exclusive to women. just like 2 years ago robert pattinsong was in heat with comic book movie fans for not wanting to bulk up for his role as batman, which was not necessary at all as long as he could perform the stunts needed when needed. moreso when you find out that other men that have played superheroes onscreen have said they had a miserable time physically preparing to look the part. not even to play it, just to "look like a superhero." i remember a few years ago alexander Skarsgard saying shooting the tarzan movie he did was the most miserable experience he had had because he was eating unseasoned chicken every single day and working out long hours. he said he even cried the first time his trainer took him out to eat Italian(??) food and would never be doing this again. going back to kpop, i just remembered when nct were doing their promotions for the nct 2020 project and they did the variety show nct world 2.0. in one of the challenges the guys were divided by teams and the team where jaehyun was in were challenged to eat 23 sushi rolls between them to commemorate the 23 members participating in the project that year. jaehyun was so stressed at first to eat his portion of the challenge because he was shooting his first drama at the time and hosting inkigayo and didn't want to look bloated for them, i think even doyoung and taeyong volunteered to eat some of his rolls for him so he wouldn't eat as much. fans weren't even talking about it afterwards, i remember them just saying he "aw, works so hard" and that was it. i was so appalled because eating a few extra rolls of sushi sin't going to cause you gain any significant amount of weight. it was such a surreal experience for me, i think about that one and skarsgard's experience a lot. anyways, this got longer than i intended because halfway to typing about sunmi i remembered the others. but heart IS still a great song, probably one if not my favorite release this year, right next to hyoyeon's deep. ok, now i am done rambling lol.
that's the thing, I was so pissed when ppl started saying that she "stopped flopping", bc all of her releases were at least good, they just care too much about thinness. the chores for tail should've won awards it was TOO GOOD.I think that oh sorry yah also suffered from the name and the fact that it didn't look like a full comeback in terms of teasers. yeah it's an issue EVERYWHERE, and it's so over the top too... like why are we doing this to ourselves? omg I remember that jaehyun moment too. and I absolutely adore heart burn, but it's bc regardless of what she looks like this release is SO her, just like the other ones
@@LisaFevral heart burn was SO HER!! you're so right on that. but so was tail. it very much aligns with the likes of 12hrs and & full moon (even noir in terms sound) but people barely paid it any attention, especially when award season came around. no one mentioned it for its choreography at all. every time I saw someone on tiktok say "omg she's finally making good music again!!!" I was like ...she never stopped making good music?? you stopped paying attention for whatever reason. watching made me realize the reason lol. it's honestly unsurprising whenever artists say they're made to do diets to at this point. but it still makes me sad. moreso in k-pop because they can be so explicit when recalling stories, like momo saying she would only eat an ice cube when she was hungry. i've seen a bit of change on this attitude which is nice but I also a bit hesitant to believe when they say they're not being forced to diet & eat whatever they want. it's just a mess all around. i honestly wish we would stop commenting on people's bodies that way we do. some people try to disguise it under fashion commentary too but honestly they're just being fat-phobic & it's just a cycle that keeps repeating, it's so exhausting.
same with lana del ray and jeongyeon of twice. suddenly their clothes are “just not flattering” even when it’s the way their outfits have always been or the outfits are even better
tbh, a lot of twice's outfits were unflattering in their cut in many eras, but I think you are 100% right about Jeongyeon, people just started to complain nonstop even when the outfit was good and she looked great
This message is very important: WE HAVE THE INFLUENCE ON WHAT IS BEING SOLD THE MOST. we are in the end the consumers ans the more we keep asking and consuming unhealthy ideas, the more popular they get and the higher the demand. Also another thing: live and let other live, not everything in your head need to be published, SPECIALLY when it´s a negative hartful comment on someons body or looks.
You see the same thing with wonyoung i don’t know much about her or follow ive but she is always on my radar because of her weight she’s sky rocketed in popularity (not saying she’s not talented before her weight loss) and that girl is a child only 17 years old and i wouldn’t be surprised if her company is pushing her thinness as a marketing tool
This is so true honestly, I always love how you explain your points and the honesty that is shown on every single of your videos.Btw you look so pretty on that outfit Lisa! your looks are always spot on !
I completely agree with you but I think kpop artists live in between a western audience that complains about them being skinny or not having curves/ass/thighs and a korean audience that asks them to get skinnier. wonyoung lost weight recently and she is being praised in korea meanwhile people on tiktok are tearing her apart
Omg I get wonyoung videos in my fyp page every.single.day. no matter how much I click the not interested button. It's really triggering, she looks sick and people keep saying she's just naturally skinny. The fact that she's considered an it girl makes it even more disturbing.
I think it’s kind of similar though, bc even though western people are looking for curves, they also expect their arms, legs and waist to be small as hell for some reason
at the end of the day, our bodies are not machines, and forcing ourselves to fit into specific molds during our short lives is just…not worth what we are socialized to think it is. at some point, we have to come to accept ourselves the way that we are. if we can’t do that for ourselves, we can’t do that for others, and things will never change. people don’t want us to be self aware because self awareness will cost their corporations millions of dollars if we collectively stop buying ‘health’ subscriptions and going to get surgeries, etc. the same applies for people who think it’s normal to attempt to conceal/prevent age with beauty products. it’s natural for our bodies to be in flux with the seasons and for them to go through drastic changes as we age, and weight gain and loss are at the tip of an enormous iceberg of changes that people (especially those born into female bodies) can go through during their lives. the more we attempt to get in the way of those things, the more we suffer in the end, i think. also, tail is my favorite sunmi era. i was curious if she gained weight during that time and it’s nice to get that confirmation that she did. i can always tell where the pendulum is swinging when it comes to kpop idols, especially female ones, and i can only hope that they (that everyone) make the choices that will benefit themselves and their bodies because they have to exist in them for the rest of their lives. and thank you for your perspective on the nuanced double standards we probably all have to some extent. this cannot be a ‘but’ conversation. it has to be a ‘both, and’ to get a full understanding of everything that contributes to how we think of our bodies and what we do with those thoughts. i think i love tail as much as i do because i’ve never seen sunmi go so above and beyond for a concept Ever AND it’s really hot AND her appearance was closer to what my little fish brain thinks of as ‘healthy’ or at least ‘stable enough to do choreography that intense.’ heart burn had to grow on me and that really might have been because of how sunmi’s appearance changed (my little fish brain does not consider her current weight ‘healthy’ or ‘stable enough for an adult woman in her 30’s.’) at the same time her weight is absolutely none of my business whatsoever. i intend to support her and her music regardless. i feel that way about most of the artists i listen to, or at least, i try to consciously remind myself that i want to feel that way. i have..so many things to consider after watching this lmao.
we go through so many fluctuations in so many ways even during one month, it's not reasonable to expect ourselves to look the same. I definitely looove tail era, such a great song, the choreography was ICONIC, and the concept for the song/video was so great I honestly love all of her comebacks, except for some singles on the side (like that single with ed Sheeran) I'm happy that this video was somehow useful and that we can all have conversations like these!
Excellent and timely video! I've always thought this - yes, the media has warped people's senses of what is good and not, but they perpetuate and amplify it too, otherwise the plus-size movement should've succeeded. And people like beauty standards, whether set by media or within social circles, pretty sure even a remote tribe has those with their own rules. The more connected the world, the higher the chances that the most vocal or active or majority who perceive a certain look as the best will end up influencing others' perceptions, not just traditional media. And apparently body shapes and sizes are going to go in and out of trend now too, with influences from actual people due to social media. It's going to be dangerous, I'd rather just makeup styles went in and out of trend 😅 It's the same with blaming algorithms too, these rely on people signals to promote content so if more people are not watching inclusive content, then it's a reflection of their behaviour that such creators are never the most famous.
I see a version of this with plastic surgery too: we want celebrities to be transparent and share all details of the surgery, which is good and should be the case, but then we also praise people for 'natural' beauty, create those listicles, obsess over childhood photos to prove that our 'stan' is a natural beauty, lists of older celebrities whom we think 'have aged gracefully' which never show the celebs with real saggy skin just the ones who won the genetic lottery. Like, can you blame them for not disclosing then? Who'd want to be thought of 'less' because of something they did to appeal to you in the first place. The solution would be - learn to appreciate art (like the acting, music, dance, fashion sense, makeup, hairstyles, heck even sense of humour!) But cognitively recognize biases based on beauty and do away with ANY JUDGEMENT based on beauty and like, do away with beauty as a criteria for assessment altogether. See beauty in things they do and produce, not in their physical features.
I like your videos so much, you're a fantastic person. I love all the topics that you bring on your channel! Continue like this, everyone should listen and learn from you 💞
You look like a mermaid or a fairy in this video. The outfit is so cute. I am always impressed by the way you can transform yourself with styling. I hope your dental surgery goes well these are always so annoying. I remember when I got my wisdom teeth removed I looked like a chipmunk as well.
Damn you're not scared to have the real conversations. What happened with sunmi was so weird to me, she was huge and everybody was talking about her and then it stopped, out of nowhere, but when I went to check her music it was still good?? I don't doubt the her body image was part of it, even though she still looked so thin like wtf people want from her. And with rebel Wilson, can I say I hate so much the "funny fat girl", I hope she gets real roles. ((That wig color suits you so well))
Yeah I was super confused by it, especially bc I always check out her music and performances and the change was so drastic that I could not believe my eyes. And, of course, with the new comeback now, everyone is obsessing again.
Yeah, everyone just stopped talking about her SPECIFICALLY In that period, and ppl will try and say that it’s because the music is worse, but it sure as hell isnt
My trick with music is. Don't pay attention to how they look. Ever! If it slaps, it slaps. If you only listen to the music because the person singing is pretty. Then you might wanna just take a while to examine yourself. Heck some artists i listen to i have no idea what they look like at all.
Hey there! Could you maybe do a fashion analyse from tokyo mew mew? It just got a reboot so its reeeally popular again but the original anime is from 2004 I think? So it's still very in the winx club era? I would love if you cover the different characters and outfits. It would mean a lot 🥰 Also sending love for your journey!
an artist that instantly comes to mind is jang wonyoung. she's always been thin, and she was very young so its understandable, but as shes grown older shes only gotten thinner and thinner. theres so much talk about her weight especially by "worried fans" and while people definitely are worried i think people dont actually want this shock value of her weight to go away, yknow? like with very thin celebs i feel like a lot of the "worry" from the public is thinly veiled awe. i think her weight has become so ingrained into her image as this "it girl" that even some of her so called most devoted fans would stop paying as much attention to her if she gained even a few kilos. and i dont doubt that she knows this.
I feel like the culture around dieting is so bad with idols that I don’t even know what the solution would be without these artists losing their positions in the industry
@@LisaFevral i think a lot of responsibility does fall on fans to be aware of what we're doing and the message it sends to idols and their companies but unfortunately weight being a big part of peoples identities is so ingrained in not only sk but the world. i dont think there will ever be an easy solution to this unfortunately
I think in a way every one of us is also to blame for putting ridiculous amounts of work into our own appearance, ultimately skewing the way women look naturally, even in the real world. Because we are carrying these ideals over into the real world and a lot of women go to great lengths to achieve them. For example: I feel insecure about my undereyes and got filler. For women there's so many things to be insecure about and I got really hung up on this flaw. And I don't see too many people with this flaw in real life, on instagram, let alone in the media. But what if that's only because a lot of people already "fixed" this "flaw" or are trying really hard to hide with concealer etc. Honestly, its hard to tell sometimes what women actually look like and I don't spend too much time on social media. This is about the real world.
I have those lines! You might not be able to see it bc I film in front of the window and reflect a lot of light due to my complexion, but they are quite deep and I can’t really get rid of them unless I get filler. I just kind of ignore them, unless they are super bad in a picture or something. But it’s hard to do so, bc ppl focus on one thing that is out of the “norm” on people and really focus on it, and the images that we are fed all day long make us believe that these lines are out of the norm. I also realized that a lot of my friends actually edit their features for pictures, not just removing a pimple or something like that, but making their whole face a different structure. It was really surprising to me and changed how I view EVERYTHING online, not just content from celebrities and influencers
@@LisaFevral I think I understand what you mean...i think we are also inspecting our own faces so much more than others. Others might not even notice your lines much, or just in passing. Noone noticed my filler. We also laserfocus on flaws and then cant see our whole faces anymore. You know whats super creepy to me? I was so obsessed with deep undereyes at some point, I basically found everyone pretty who didnt have them. But those people prob didnt see that in themselves, they probably have others flaws they are focusing on. Anyway, Im so sure your lines are not out of the norm at all. Or at least there are so many other people out there with them. And even if they werent...they shouldnt make us feel worse about ourselves. I told myself all this but tbh it didnt really help...i tried reframing and all that bullshit, but you just dont see them a lot on pretty ppl. I know thats just bc they conceal them tho My obsession is gone now luckily and I hope it wont come back if the filler wears off one day. About your friends, yes! That changing your face thing is so misleading, its so subtle now, you can have really realistic filters that do that and make your skin glow etc. And it looks very natural, it really fools your brain. I know we are all doing these things to make ourselves look better out of insecurity, but its still playing into this vivious cycle. I wish I could take myself out there but its hard. Sorry for the long message, I really enjoyed your answer and your video! It would be really fun to discuss this topic with u I think:)
omg i remember following taylor swift tumblr photos back then bcos i like her 'after gym' outfits. and then I wonder was that all she did apart from singing... thought she was naturally thin. didn't know she starve herself :(
if you watch her Miss Americana documentary she talks a lot about how it was affecting her & how shes trying to change that state of mind which is great because she started eating more & she looks so much healthier like her body changed from 1989 the release of reputation during her tour you could see some sort of curves (im not going to go more into it because I dont like unsolicited comments on others bodies) but anyways yeah it was sad but I hope shes better now.
love this video but i have to point out: the backlash to lizzo wasn’t because she was exercising or eating healthy, but bc the “cleanse” she went on was actual starvation. It was not enough food for anyone. I agree that people hold Lizzo to this high standard to stay in the body she is in, but that “cleanse” done by any celeb would have sparked outrage. She was essentially modeling starvation g under the guise of detoxing. She also claimed she did it to feel better and yet also posted a before and after.
Makes me think of Selena Gomez. She was absolutely OBSESSED OVER on Instagram for a long time for her looks, has the most followers at one point I’m pretty sure. Suddenly gained some weight (really not much??? Even if it was it doesn’t matter but the reaction to it is even more shocking bc she barely really changed) because she was on strong medication for her really awful illness, and is hated. Like actually bullied. It’s horrific. No wonder others seen this and think oh fuck no, I need to lose weight. It’s insane
As far as I know selena was going through chemo for her lupus back then, so I am HORRIFIED at how people acted back then! Going through chemo myself I know taht sometimes you have to take tons of steroids too, which can literally blow you up (in terms of water retention, it is a weird side effect) and I just can’t imagine having the whole world judge what you look like while you’re going through it
A lot of people are just ashamed of what they like. Skinny will always be ideal but a lot of people aren't built like that! People are lying about body positivity 💀it still has negative association with ill-health💔💔 we all should acknowledge that 99% of kpop idols are starving
I think that skinny is not even an unchanging ideal, bc being like size 12 was the hight of beauty in the past. We are just too influenced by what we’re told to like
Sunmi literally said the first time she gained weight she accomplished it in a really unhealthy way by overeating cause people kept skinny shaming her. She's always been thin. I find it so weird how people take anything involving an idol gaining weight as positive no matter what the cause is, but as soon as it's underweight everyone acts like they're being forced and it's horrible. If people are supposed to be accepted at a higher weight then stop talking about people who's at a lower weight. She passed out because she overworked herself ( if i remember correctly she got IV fluids). If she wants to gain or lose it should be for herself only, but don't act like her gaining weight was something she decided to do for herself when she's been harassed about her weight since forever and she stated she did it cause people were telling her to. And before anyone says anything, why do people discredit underweight people saying they're fine but as soon as it's about gaining weight it's suddenly the truth.
somi isn’t healthy being underweight unless you were born like that is never healthy she went from 58 to 46kg and i won’t hear the “she lost healthy” you can lose weight slow or fast,by diet or exercise but if you lose weight to an underweight level it’ll never matter how you got there ive been underweight by starving and exercising for over ten years and no matter the method of getting there, the getting there was negative for my health
Sunmis low weight have a negative impact on her performance you could see her energy when she gained weight and she’s a performer so as a fan it should be about the music and performance not the look
Yeah, all of a sudden they are surprised by her choice in men too(bc she’s not an aesthetic of a glamorous woman next to them), even though she’s always been dating them
I feel this way about Wonyoung's popularity. Everyone talks about how unhealthy she looks and how worried they are that she is so young doing what she is doing but no one is boycotting IVE. She's basically a 4th gen it girl at this point because she's beautiful and skinny. She was always thin and pretty but after becoming visibly smaller in IVE suddenly there are 5,000 douyin videos telling people how to "get the wonyoung look" as if her face didn't look the same before. Her body is always the focal point of her popularity, never her singing or performances (which is douubly gross considering she is/was a minor). She's even being endorsed by huge brands like miu miu now. I just don't understand how people don't understand that the disproportionate amount of support for ultra thin bodies inherently means that idols and celebs (who are basically products to their companies) strive to portray that image and retain their popularity. As fans, we are the problem too.
Yeah I am a bit worried about the messaging that this girl is receiving from people… the less she weighs the more successful they make her. This can’t be good for a young mind
I remember when CL gained weight because of her antidepressants but she got body shamed so badly that she said she’ll stop using them to lose weight. 💀I’m over people thinking they know what’s good for someone like a persons weight somehow matter more than their actual health, mental and physical.
Yeah I’m always shocked when this happens, it’s just so messed up
makes me think about parents that have the same mindset
you put it well into words
CL?
@@chloee.6495 Yeah, she's a music artist who used to be in a Kpop group
at the same time every public appearance of hers when she fattened up was wearing a corset or a very large coat even on live performances she wouldn't take it off supposedly to hide her physique
When people say that "society's standards are toxic" who exactly is society? YES. That's right WE ARE. Let's just admit it, instead of acting like society is some disgusting physical thing that we have no control over. Society is us.
Exactly!!
Kinda reminds of the "is it fashionable or just skinny" there's alot people who stan someone because the fit their aesthetic
Yeah, it does remind me of that too! It’s strange how we don’t notice our biases sometimes
same happened to Lana Del Rey. Ever since she has gained weight and clearly still healthy, people have said her style is a mess/basic/nothing special now -when her style has never changed. it shows the obsession people have over celebrities bodies and its sad to see.
yeah they call her style trashy now, even though it's literally the same
I remember seeing people say that Taylor Swift has lost her sense of style, and she 'dresses old' somehow. But when she was wearing vintage outfits years ago they called her a style icon. Makes me wonder if it's literally just because she was skinnier, cus she doesn't dress that much different now as she did then.
Yeah it seems like it could be the case. There must be some ppl who just mean that she doesn’t dress like a gen z(which is not really what she needs to be dressing as anyway tbh), but ppl just obsessing over ppl being thin is probably the biggest group
na she dress very differently, someone analized her style here on yt
@@sofypi7493 she tends to switch up looks depending on the albums she releases hence all of her eras & diff styles plus shes 30 cant expect her to dress the same all the time you know
@@lexirodriguez8112 she has toned her style down, that's what I have noticed
It's super weird how silhouettes go in and out of style like that.
Being healthy should ALWAYS be the norm.
Yeah it’s just weird, but it keeps on happening
@@Lexirue2 What I meant is that people should be encouraged to take care of their health instead of "If you look like that you'll make more money".
The celebrities which we blame so much for messing with our perception of beauty are actually just meeting a popular demand in the market - if we keep allowing ourselves to be fed with the concept of an 'ideal body' then there will always be celebrities that rise to the demand...
Yeah, I feel like the more we become aware of these patterns and the more we consciously adjust - the better we will be overall to ourselves and others
its one of those things i feel helpless, like we cant change cause the whole system is rigged but im hopeful a future like yous have in mind will come to light.
exactly. if there was no demand, then there would be no supply.
I was thinking about this, I was so sad that Tail didn't get hype. Sunmi killed that era and weight should've never played a role.
Yeah I just cannot believe how blatant it is too
I’m not really on twitter and i didn’t notice she had gained weight, i only saw that inerview with jessi…..damn that’s awful.
I had no clue her weight was a controversy (if you can even call it that) during that era. Sunmi deserves so much better :(
Stans who say "health is the priority, please don't skip meals please eat well etc etc" are the same ones who also say "omg waist so snatched, abs so defined, etc etc".
(I'm unsure which one it would've been as I don't closely follow 127)
I'd also like to mention a fact that a lot of stans are unaware of, and that is that to get those clean cut defined abs you kind of...
💯
true, this is very true.
The damage to one's health is irreversible
oh man, that's just sad...
scary
That watermelon pink wig is gourgeous- it looks so at home on you, getting a snack and coming back to watch this :)
Thank you🥰🤍
It's so easy to blame the industry (kpop industry, Hollywood, etc.) but it's actually a symbiotic relationship, we respond to what it's sold to us and the media feeds off of our response.
People expect people to have clear skin because of filters and makeup on social media.
yeah we definitely see super clear skin as "normal" or "default" setting for everyone, which isn't great and just unrealistic
This is so true. And being on kpop tik tok really shows how the fans view weight. Sometimes they literally ignore how they influence their faves when it comes to weight🙁
Yeah, same with Twitter… a lot of unhealthy behaviour for both the people who talk about it and the celebrities
Yeah, most kid celebrities are having a hard time growing up in the spotlight too for the same reasons
I'm so glad Taylor Swift didn't sugarcoat the truth. She didn't say I FASTED. She said, "...starve a little bit. Just stop eating."
Honest woman. Awesome. :)
Anyway, YOUR VIDEOS ARE ALWAYS SO COOL!!!
Edit: The Cher comment at the end was neat xD Your editing skills are ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you thank you🥰
It's the same for dua lipa she had a "glow up" and became all the craz. Yeah she put out good song but the stage are full of comment saying She sooo fine and looking much better. As If no one buillied her to learn to dance and to lose Weight. I remember all the comment left after her concert with black pink were comparing them and saying She was huge, She was going to eat them, She a big horse. I mean 🤮🤮🤮
I haven't seen those comments(about the bp performance, but I haven't looked at them) but I am horrified to hear that people were saying that
I had forgotten 💀 even when they didn't say it directly they would write shit like "blackpink looks so tiny compared to dua lipa, literally babies 🥺"
@quackquack omfg that's so ridiculous of them istg
it's a hard pill to swallow, thank you for talking about this. it's important to think about these things, especially when in the end you are coming to a conclusion that you're part of the problem, because it's opening up a room for improvement. body image issues is a deep and complicated topic and the solutions to all these problems are so so far away from us, but the more we think and talk about it, the closer we are!!
p.s. i love how your lipstick and hair match!!!
I hope that recovery is gonna get easier with every day🤍
And thank you sm🥰
Ariel is right; this is a topic that needs a discussion, we should stop sweeping it under the carpet.
ahaha Ariel🥹 and yeah, 100%
This needed to be said, thank you for always being honest Lisa. We need more people like you. 💖
Oh thank you🤍
Ive had too completely overhaul the way I approach exercise.
I began posting my workouts on my channel, so I'd have a visual to SEE with my own eyes, that I'm getting stronger, and better at yoga/pilates and exercise isnt just about trying to be thin.
yeah that is definitely progress, to be able to switch that mentality
They’ll have to admit to seeing themselves in the “enemy” aka celebs, the people they have been criticizing for so long.
yeah, bc it's easier to completely absolve ourselves of any responsibility
thank you for talking abt this especially in regards to kpop. I usually stay off of most SNS these days but the amount of times a yt video about an idol's weight loss/gain pops up when i'm searching for something completely different (like an MV or something) is honestly scary because it would be so easy for the artists to also stumble upon them.
I agree that we should just not comment on people's weight at all
yeah, it's also so dangerous for really young people to see
This is kind of irrelevant, but it's so nice to see another Sunmi fan :> I really love her music, it always makes me feel hopeful and bright.
yeah her music and concepts are great!
Ahahahah yeah, her music was great in that period too, ppl are just being hypocrites, unfortunately
@@vixxexo6855 Kinda similar for me. I really liked tail and siren and pporappippam but not gashina
I think it ALL boils down to capitalism. This artists, their labels and companies in general, like you said, are going to mold themselves into what makes them the more profit. It's sad, but with influencers now, even human connection and relationships are commodities.
At least we know that if we wanna hit them where it hurts - we gotta hit them in their wallets haha
Your wig color complements your complexion amazingly 💖
Thank you🤍🤍🤍
Aaaah I love Sunmi's Tail.
Yeah I agree. I personally feel like I am not biology even though technically I am, I just have a hard time seeing myself as a tangible being ahahah
@@LisaFevral i feel you, being alive is a weird feeling that's both physical and mental but it doesn't feel like either it more so feels like you're a spirit inhabiting a body that inhabits earth if that makes sense... lmao im not religious tho so i don't really know
same, it just feels strange ahah
100% agree
Media won't invest in anything people are not interested in.
I totally agree with everything you said, so none of this is a contradicting that, but there are so many conflicting factors when it comes to 'fat representation'... in fact it's so complicated I have to write some bullet points haha
Some complicated factors:
☆ Because there are so few overweight or fat women celebrities, there's this sense of disappointment when one of them drastically loses weight, because it's like we're 'losing' one of the small handful of representation we have.
When you brought up people saying Sunmi's music was "not hitting the same" when she was at a slightly higher weight I legit laughed because Pporappippam and Tail SLAP what are they even talking about?
ikr??? like did they miss all of her releases or something?
Tuning in while I wash the dishes
Edit: "the girl jumps around on stage with a flute"😂😂😂 true though.
OMG YES! I was just thinking of this. Everyone blames “society” but who exactly is this “society” if not us lol. Great topic and perspective
You are so right! We have to take responsibility as well.
I love to hear it. Subbed ❤ Being self-aware, and owning our influence is so important, but people rarely feel responsible for this kinda of thing... perhaps because they don't realise they have that power, however small.
Great video. This needed to be said. 10/10, no notes.
Here I leave more examples of celebrities with this type of issues:
Jinkx Monsoon (winner of rupauls drag race season 5) has commented that since he left the program in 2012 fans have criticized him more than once for having gained weight although this factor does not affect her work as a singer and actress.
C.Tangana (Spanish singer) in one of his BTS videos from his latest album, he comments on how he is all the time aware of his body and staying in shape to maintain his image since due to his genetics he is prone to gain fat easily.
Jinkx video(minute 8:40 aprox):
th-cam.com/video/i7DcnwLgTw0/w-d-xo.html
Yeah it’s literally an international issue, unfortunately
Thank you for talking about this the way you handled this topic is incredible really made me think about how I consume media
There's a bunch of things that come into play🍃
kind of random but i love your voice idk maybe it’s the way you articulate sounds pleasing to the ears hope that doesn’t sound weird 😭
Oh thank you🤍
Thank u Lisa for making this video, this topic iss super important and i havent seen anyone else talk about it.

Oh thank you sm🥰🥰
It was always so weird to me that, when talking about social problems, youtubers never fail to mention that they don't want to, and that we shouldn't also, blame individual people, but 'the X culture'. But we're a part of that!! It feels like they talk to talk. Just putting the blame on the mysterious 'dieting culture' or whatever. Call out the people who contribute to it, too. It didn't appear out of nowhere and it continues to appear because it sells.
yeah like who the hell is creating that diet culture? we do!
I absolutely loved this video!
Would love you to address "The Society of the Spectacle" in more depth, on the podcast.
XoXo
Ok I definitely will then🤍
People just love to blame celebrities for pushing unhealthy standards, like they’re invulnerable to insecurities or health issues themselves.
Yeah I feel like we should try to change the demand to adjust the media ourselves instead
A truly important video. Thank you Lisa for your work!
And thank you for watching🤍
I've seen videos occasionally on my feed that compare these celebrities before and after (no clue why, I always ignore them! I thought the yt algorithm was smarter than this bro) and it's so strange! Because, it's not the fans business in the first place y'know??
Btw, loving the look! That colour looks fantastic on you! haha! 🤭💞
Yeah I get those recommended too for some reason!
And thank you sm🥰🥰
i'm so soso!! glad you spoke about this and moreso that you decided to use sunmi as one of your case studies here because just your opening made so many thoughts I've had ruminating in my head since she began teasing heart burn finally click.
(she does look so so pretty with orange hair, i hope she does this look again later on.)
so many other artists often say they kind of dread the release of new music/shooting movies because they know they're going to be put on diets and made to lose weight. weight that oftentimes isn't even inconvinincing them in any way, it just makes them less slim. it's not even something exclusive to women. just like 2 years ago robert pattinsong was in heat with comic book movie fans for not wanting to bulk up for his role as batman, which was not necessary at all as long as he could perform the stunts needed when needed. moreso when you find out that other men that have played superheroes onscreen have said they had a miserable time physically preparing to look the part. not even to play it, just to "look like a superhero." i remember a few years ago alexander Skarsgard saying shooting the tarzan movie he did was the most miserable experience he had had because he was eating unseasoned chicken every single day and working out long hours. he said he even cried the first time his trainer took him out to eat Italian(??) food and would never be doing this again. going back to kpop, i just remembered when nct were doing their promotions for the nct 2020 project and they did the variety show nct world 2.0. in one of the challenges the guys were divided by teams and the team where jaehyun was in were challenged to eat 23 sushi rolls between them to commemorate the 23 members participating in the project that year. jaehyun was so stressed at first to eat his portion of the challenge because he was shooting his first drama at the time and hosting inkigayo and didn't want to look bloated for them, i think even doyoung and taeyong volunteered to eat some of his rolls for him so he wouldn't eat as much. fans weren't even talking about it afterwards, i remember them just saying he "aw, works so hard" and that was it. i was so appalled because eating a few extra rolls of sushi sin't going to cause you gain any significant amount of weight. it was such a surreal experience for me, i think about that one and skarsgard's experience a lot.
anyways, this got longer than i intended because halfway to typing about sunmi i remembered the others. but heart IS still a great song, probably one if not my favorite release this year, right next to hyoyeon's deep. ok, now i am done rambling lol.
that's the thing, I was so pissed when ppl started saying that she "stopped flopping", bc all of her releases were at least good, they just care too much about thinness. the chores for tail should've won awards it was TOO GOOD.I think that oh sorry yah also suffered from the name and the fact that it didn't look like a full comeback in terms of teasers.
yeah it's an issue EVERYWHERE, and it's so over the top too... like why are we doing this to ourselves?
omg I remember that jaehyun moment too. and I absolutely adore heart burn, but it's bc regardless of what she looks like this release is SO her, just like the other ones
@@LisaFevral heart burn was SO HER!! you're so right on that. but so was tail. it very much aligns with the likes of 12hrs and & full moon (even noir in terms sound) but people barely paid it any attention, especially when award season came around. no one mentioned it for its choreography at all. every time I saw someone on tiktok say "omg she's finally making good music again!!!" I was like ...she never stopped making good music?? you stopped paying attention for whatever reason. watching made me realize the reason lol.
it's honestly unsurprising whenever artists say they're made to do diets to at this point. but it still makes me sad. moreso in k-pop because they can be so explicit when recalling stories, like momo saying she would only eat an ice cube when she was hungry. i've seen a bit of change on this attitude which is nice but I also a bit hesitant to believe when they say they're not being forced to diet & eat whatever they want.
it's just a mess all around. i honestly wish we would stop commenting on people's bodies that way we do. some people try to disguise it under fashion commentary too but honestly they're just being fat-phobic & it's just a cycle that keeps repeating, it's so exhausting.
wow this is such a good video!! it made me self reflect and realise my own biases towards appearances in media
omg I'm so glad you liked it and found it useful!
I completely agree with you!
Thanks for making this video, it was very interesting! ❤
thank you for watching it🥰
same with lana del ray and jeongyeon of twice. suddenly their clothes are “just not flattering” even when it’s the way their outfits have always been or the outfits are even better
tbh, a lot of twice's outfits were unflattering in their cut in many eras, but I think you are 100% right about Jeongyeon, people just started to complain nonstop even when the outfit was good and she looked great
This message is very important: WE HAVE THE INFLUENCE ON WHAT IS BEING SOLD THE MOST. we are in the end the consumers ans the more we keep asking and consuming unhealthy ideas, the more popular they get and the higher the demand.
Also another thing: live and let other live, not everything in your head need to be published, SPECIALLY when it´s a negative hartful comment on someons body or looks.
yeah sometimes things should just stay in your head ahaha
You see the same thing with wonyoung i don’t know much about her or follow ive but she is always on my radar because of her weight she’s sky rocketed in popularity (not saying she’s not talented before her weight loss)
and that girl is a child only 17 years old and i wouldn’t be surprised if her company is pushing her thinness as a marketing tool
yeah, she's been in the public eye since she was what, 13 or something? it's just not right
This is so true honestly, I always love how you explain your points and the honesty that is shown on every single of your videos.Btw you look so pretty on that outfit Lisa! your looks are always spot on !
Omg thank you sm! It’s my fave dress and wig rn haha
Very very pretty wig!!!!
Thank you🥰
I agree!!! Especially I loved her Tail era where she looked more healthy and now its just dissapointing but sadly not surprising.
I hope that she is well, however she looks
@@LisaFevral definetaly-mentally and physically
loved this video Lisa! thank you for the awesome content as per usual
Thank you for watching it🥰🤍
I completely agree with you but I think kpop artists live in between a western audience that complains about them being skinny or not having curves/ass/thighs and a korean audience that asks them to get skinnier. wonyoung lost weight recently and she is being praised in korea meanwhile people on tiktok are tearing her apart
I definitely looove tail era, such a great song, the choreography was ICONIC, and the concept for the song/video was so great
I honestly love all of her comebacks, except for some singles on the side (like that single with ed Sheeran)
I'm happy that this video was somehow useful and that we can all have conversations like these!
It's going to be dangerous, I'd rather just makeup styles went in and out of trend 😅
It's the same with blaming algorithms too, these rely on people signals to promote content so if more people are not watching inclusive content, then it's a reflection of their behaviour that such creators are never the most famous.
See beauty in things they do and produce, not in their physical features.
yeah it's really unfortunate, and I wish it would change, but it's definitely a reflection of us
I like your videos so much, you're a fantastic person. I love all the topics that you bring on your channel! Continue like this, everyone should listen and learn from you 💞
oh thank you so much, it's really nice of you to say!
You look like a mermaid or a fairy in this video. The outfit is so cute. I am always impressed by the way you can transform yourself with styling. I hope your dental surgery goes well these are always so annoying. I remember when I got my wisdom teeth removed I looked like a chipmunk as well.
Omg thank you sm🥰🥰 and it went well, I didn’t get much swelling bc I was icing it religiously, but it does still hurt a bit
tysm for confronting this topic head on xx
Hmm this rlly got me thinking cause I seriously heard nothing about sunmi for like a year
Yeah, everyone just stopped talking about her SPECIFICALLY In that period, and ppl will try and say that it’s because the music is worse, but it sure as hell isnt
It would mean a lot 🥰
Also sending love for your journey!
Yeah, Tokyo mew mew has been requested before so it’s already on my to do list!
an artist that instantly comes to mind is jang wonyoung. she's always been thin, and she was very young so its understandable, but as shes grown older shes only gotten thinner and thinner. theres so much talk about her weight especially by "worried fans" and while people definitely are worried i think people dont actually want this shock value of her weight to go away, yknow? like with very thin celebs i feel like a lot of the "worry" from the public is thinly veiled awe. i think her weight has become so ingrained into her image as this "it girl" that even some of her so called most devoted fans would stop paying as much attention to her if she gained even a few kilos. and i dont doubt that she knows this.
I feel like the culture around dieting is so bad with idols that I don’t even know what the solution would be without these artists losing their positions in the industry
@@LisaFevral i think a lot of responsibility does fall on fans to be aware of what we're doing and the message it sends to idols and their companies but unfortunately weight being a big part of peoples identities is so ingrained in not only sk but the world. i dont think there will ever be an easy solution to this unfortunately
love ur informative videos and ur voice is so soothing
I’m glad you’re enjoying them🤍🤍🤍
I think in a way every one of us is also to blame for putting ridiculous amounts of work into our own appearance, ultimately skewing the way women look naturally, even in the real world.
I know thats just bc they conceal them tho
My obsession is gone now luckily and I hope it wont come back if the filler wears off one day.
It would be really fun to discuss this topic with u I think:)
omg i remember following taylor swift tumblr photos back then bcos i like her 'after gym' outfits. and then I wonder was that all she did apart from singing... thought she was naturally thin. didn't know she starve herself :(
yeah... I thought so too
if you watch her Miss Americana documentary she talks a lot about how it was affecting her & how shes trying to change that state of mind which is great because she started eating more & she looks so much healthier like her body changed from 1989 the release of reputation during her tour you could see some sort of curves (im not going to go more into it because I dont like unsolicited comments on others bodies) but anyways yeah it was sad but I hope shes better now.
your hair looks really nice
Thank you😌🤍
Wish you the best on that surgery, I hope it turns out well ❤️😘
thank you sm🥰 it has gone well, now I'm just hoping it heals quickly!
love this video but i have to point out: the backlash to lizzo wasn’t because she was exercising or eating healthy, but bc the “cleanse” she went on was actual starvation.
Going through chemo myself I know taht sometimes you have to take tons of steroids too, which can literally blow you up (in terms of water retention, it is a weird side effect) and I just can’t imagine having the whole world judge what you look like while you’re going through it
Bruh I'm happy I'm NOT a celebrity--- I could never deal with that pressure...
amazing video ❤
Thank you🤍🤍🤍
A lot of people are just ashamed of what they like.
We are just too influenced by what we’re told to like
I honestly didn't even notice that Sunmi gained or lost weight
She didn’t even gain much, but ppl are so over the top about these things
Omg ur little dog in the bg 🥺
my baby hehe
And before anyone says anything, why do people discredit underweight people saying they're fine but as soon as it's about gaining weight it's suddenly the truth.
somi isn’t healthy being underweight unless you were born like that is never healthy she went from 58 to 46kg and i won’t hear the “she lost healthy” you can lose weight slow or fast,by diet or exercise but if you lose weight to an underweight level it’ll never matter how you got there
ive been underweight by starving and exercising for over ten years and no matter the method of getting there, the getting there was negative for my health
This is one of the reasons why I deleted my account and Twitter in general
Sunmis low weight have a negative impact on her performance you could see her energy when she gained weight and she’s a performer so as a fan it should be about the music and performance not the look
she said herself in a recent live that she can't do her tail dance the same way bc it's tiring with this weight
Like everyone is talkingb about lana's weight rn
and saying she "lost her style" 🙄
Yeah, all of a sudden they are surprised by her choice in men too(bc she’s not an aesthetic of a glamorous woman next to them), even though she’s always been dating them
I always say Sunmi like Sun-mi but you said it like Seon-mi, which way is right??😭😭😭
She said at her concert it’s Seon-mi
By the way, how are you feeling?
Hope everything is ok💜
I’m feeling ok, just recovering from removing a couple of wisdom teeth haha
