The Armenian railways saw better times before the wars broke out in the region. The railway link with Russia was cut in 2008 due to conflict in Georgia which makes it hard to supply them with new locomotives and carriages. A few links within the country were also cut for security reason. You might have spotted one of the railway lines going through the scenic valley parallel to the highway from Tbilisi (Dilijan-Sevan route).They also try to be as economical as possible with what they've got. Nevertheless I hope things will soon turn to better.
Yes hope it gets better. But it was great to explore railways in Armenia. They definately have some nice routes. The route to sevan we want to take! That one looks good with old local train 👌
Yeah unfortunately scr focuses mostly on freight transportation, since it's more profitable. That's why there are so few passenger trains and a lot of them are old
These ER2 are relicts. They are used in Russia only as tourist-trains or as monuments, part of exhibition in museum. So you are so lucky to having a ride on them. If you have an access to Russia, check out Sochi - Sukhumi commuter trains. Also ER2 but with beautiful route across Black Sea coast.
The "new" russian trains don't differ much from the refurbished Soviet trains in Latvia. Only the "new" trains have even worse quality than the refurbs. And almost all the previous design flaws remain - high floors with extremely steep steps (I doubt they have high platforms everywhere), narrow doors in the ends (local and regional trains should have vetter distrivuted doors to avoid crowding), 3+3 seating, painfully slow acceleration,...

@Letsgobyland ....yes , agree
The new train looks low quality and too small, at least it's cleaner than the old one. Are the announcements only in Russian? No Armenian?
Yes train is too short. Need at least 3 carriages. There was announcements in armenian too
It should be Armenian and English.
Ruzzian is only for occupiers who don't bother learning the local "dog languages" (yes, they call them that).

Yes not always “new” means better…
@@Letsgobyland That "New Russian train" are facelifted old soviet ER2, with same chassis, wheels and old mechanical controled motors
Одно говно поменяли на второе ничего нового
