A poetic cautionary ballad about the dangers of procrastination and not seizing life's opportunities...before you fully realise, time has mercilessly passed you by, and you are now in a fast-moving world that you do not understand. You limp fearfully and feebly along as professional young giants mightily stride and drive past, barely noticing you and your insignificant, ant-like status. Live well, live good, and don't neglect the one life you have only to become the trembling, pining, old, forgotten shell that Rob Halford alludes to so brilliantly in this melancholic, bittersweet song.
Another take on this song: A man who conformed to society and lived upto his supposed ideal, except it was never his own, rather one he adopted. Now, he is approaching old age and asking himself if he did the right thing, regretful and pessimistic about any possibility of self actualization. My 2 cents.
Long Beach Arena back in 1977.....My ears rang for days ....Halford peeled the paint off the walls.....Riding a Harley on stage lights blaring, reving the throttle.....Avery throttle.....A very memorable evening.....
I don’t know what cocaine did to music but 70s music is by far the greatest decade in music history. I love salsa and rock and in both these genres the masterpieces come from the 70s.
Is called rules.... Back them nobody set rules of how a certain genre had to sound... So everyone just sort off made music around the idea of how a genre should sound.. In which if it became popular people would start copying it ... Paul Mccarthy said it on an episode in a Hulu series ... And also a song by daft punk called Giorgio at the end he says "nobody told me what to do ... There was no preconception of what to do" Which is why music from the 70s specially rock or 70s metal is by far more popular because it sounds different then 80s 90s and 00s to todays standards.... Same thing happened to disco it became popular then it morphed into synthesizer 80s synth ... Then 90s was like sped up which because techno ... Then 00s slowed it down ... It became trance .. Then EDM was formed
I have been listening to Priest since my teens. Their ballads have been some of my most favorite songs. Guess I never really listened to this song when I was younger as I didn't know till today what this song was about. Yes, the ending "I can't go on" I have heard many times from my older friends even my mom at 92 years young. Gives a whole new perspective to this song and for these guys to write and record a song of this nature is awesome! Yes, tears well up now listening to the ending!
I grew up with JP at a very young age. My older brother introduced me to this album back in 1974. This is the early great years of JP and Rob Halford amazing lyrics and music ❤️🤘
A real pearl - the song, its structure, atmosphere and mood, the lyrics and message, Hinchs shuffles and ...: Halfords divine voice and singing: stunning pure revelation!!!
I have been a fan of JP from British Steel and on I just got into the first records and this is one of my favorites now. A more natural voice to Rob here.
I've seen judas 16 times over the years.....ian hill is the engine that drives priest....he just stands there and jams.....ian hill....a toast to you brother!!!@!!!!!
Yes, certainly drives the point home. What's really revealing to me is that the line is "You keep to the gutter, in case you fall". This poor soul is actually setting themselves up to fall into the gutter with intention. Truly sad.
I have never been a huge Judas Priest fan... somehow never got to check out their entire discography, so my knowledge of them was limited to their "hits". Run of the Mill song just blew me away! The lyrics, the vocals - astonishing! I'm going to dig for all of their early albums!
this song will always remind me of sitting on the train riding into Stuttgart. my stop is aways away but it's fun because i have a lot of music to listen to on the trip. once off at my stop it's hard to take out the headphones as i find the location of my next drink.
Early Judas Priest was more diverse and songs like this are greatly underrated. Black Sabbath may be the granddaddy of heavy metal but Judas Priest took it to a new level with duel lead guitar. They influenced a lot of great bands that came out in the 80’s, including Metallica. So why didn’t Metallica cover Judas Priest on Garage Days revisited like they did for Black Sabbath? Judas carried the metal god torch for 40 years, no other metal band has come close to this achievement.
The official birth of screamers on the field before j.p become a heavy metal band.an amazing song and for me the best album of the priest.also as far as I know this is the very first composition of k downing.
11 comments and one is ripping the word text and one complaining the sound quality is remastered. congratulations the two of you truly are "Run of the Mill". Go Achieve while there's time
I just heard this finally today, 23rd January twenty nineteen, damn you radio stations, how dare you never play this music magic, damn you all to hell!
It reminds me of the twenty years I've spent in the iron foundry biz sweating n slaving to the point where I spent the last few years trying to get out of there. One day I said "fuck it!" Went back to and old job that pays better now...I'm staying here now.
my homie Martin Fright Chapa showed me this bad ass jam. I love you my boy! Forever will always remind me of you. Best of homies! #DeadEndBoys #Fright #FilthySquad
"Now with the aid of your new walking stick, You hobble along through society thick. And look mesmerized by the face of it all, You keep to the gutter in case you fall"
The best Song ever on Priest My favorite Song about 1985! I sometimes wonder those other Rock Albums what they mayby written that same Rock line?! Ofcourse this was a speculation!

Very well put. You've done a brilliant job of summing up the essence of this masterpiece of a song.
F*T*W & English grammar of dweebs feedback!
This moved me. What a flawless synopsis of this most heart-wrenching song.
Another take on this song:
A man who conformed to society and lived upto his supposed ideal, except it was never his own, rather one he adopted. Now, he is approaching old age and asking himself if he did the right thing, regretful and pessimistic about any possibility of self actualization.
My 2 cents.

The way he says "gutter" is amazing
Yes, certainly drives the point home. What's really revealing to me is that the line is "You keep to the gutter, in case you fall". This poor soul is actually setting themselves up to fall into the gutter with intention. Truly sad.
It was beginning of the later Halford

Metallica covered rapid fire at some point but not on garage inc
When Rob screams "I can't go on" at the end I literally have a spine tingling metal orgasmic meltdown...
Adoring this song. And I love the picture accompanying it here...orchard somewhere on the western coast of Norway is my guess.
Insanely good song on so many levels and so over looked,.......love it
The official birth of screamers on the field before j.p become a heavy metal band.an amazing song and for me the best album of the priest.also as far as I know this is the very first composition of k downing.
