    This is a really cool GE 45 ton switcher that has been detailed and modified, including adding a flashing beacon and DCC.

    Dan I gotta say, I laughed out loud when you fired that puppy up and beeped the horn. It's like a tractor! This is so awesome! I have no reason to have one of these but I think I'll have to model one. I hate to say this because that GP38-2B you built is gorgeous but this might just be my new favorite loco of yours! Thanks for sharing it with us!

    Nicely done model. Some of them were MU. If you ever worked with end steps, you miss them today. Very impressed with the model and how well it runs.

    Our 45 tonner at Boone can move three heavyweight passenger cars with little effort as long as the track is dry.

    Actually if you look on railpictures or railroad picture archives, you will find one of these used in interchange service. Remember, anytime you hand off cars from one railroad to another you are interchanging. So a small short line or even an industrial unit might be interchanging a cut of cars with a major railroad. Just don't expect them on Cajon!

    You guys are dangerous! I lived with sound-less trains for 60 years and was happy. But seeing all the diesels with sound, I was "forced" to buy a Monon H10-16 off eBay this week. I don't even model Monon! By the way, in the UK/OO world, diesels with side rods are common. (see Bachmann or Hornby Class 08 for example.) The UK trains are another rich part of the rail hobby that we here in North America aren't exposed to. But it's a fascinating part. Google BR 37 Class for a treat.

    Great review. Who makes the flashing unit?
    Thanks

    Actually it could handle about 20 loaded cars on level track. You underestimate it's pulling capacity. Two 150HP Cummins diesels, one under each hood. It had 27,000Ibf tractive effort. I am sure on a grade that number decrease greatly. But it was used on some branch lines. The 44 ton GE was the same HP and it was used on shortlines pulling decent sized trains. Not huge, but respectable. The branch where I live was operated originally by the Santa Fe. There were times that they only had ONE car. Thought they had a GP39-2, and two either GP35's or GP30(rebuilt). Most of the time only one unit was providing power while two were isolated. I know, had a friend that operated them. So never try to judge by size, it is deceptive. Look up the Alco S series switchers. They pulled quite a bit for their size.

      @abelwayne9613 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Correction, the GE 44 ton locomotive had two 180HP diesels for 360HP total. Or there was an option for a 400HP version. Sorry about that!

      Don't feel bad. I custom build and my layout is only 2' 3" x 7' ! Think how hard it is to test DCC installation! I am planning to do an oval just for speed matching locomotives in DCC. But unfortunately I am new to DCC. For years I have built the locomotives, now I have to move into the 21st century and offer them with DCC/Sound. Can I ask you, do you know if the locomotive has room for weight? I think I heard they have an empty space in the frame/fuel tank area for a speaker? If you don't worry about sound you MIGHT be able to put some weight there. Also consider replacing parts with metal, if possible.

    • @abelwayne9613
      @abelwayne9613 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, you might try that. If you want sound, make a sound car or even a whole layout sound system. I am thinking of the latter since I cannot afford the high end decoders. Digitrax has mediocre sound, but with the right sized speakers and an amplifier it could sound decent. The soundbug has 8 sounds pre loaded and you can find it for about $44 online. Not bad. It can be addressed the same as you loco and will then respond as if it were installed in the loco, without all that cramming of wires!! Just think, I know of a supplier that does custom work as well. He does this in N scale!!!! Hows THAT for reason to pull out your hair!! YIKES!! :) But you know, you don't necessarily have to pull that many cars. If you have a small layout it looks better to deal with 2 maybe 3 cars at a time. We have a 22 mile branch and I have seen the ATSF(later BNSF and now Watco) pull only ONE car with 3 engines. Sometimes 2 were isolated, but still, ONE car??? So if it happens once, it is prototype.

    What speaker/ sound decoder did you use?

  • @defaultname2498
    @defaultname2498 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Does the decider supply dcc/replace the decoder to the loco like the tsunami decoders does? Also i believe its a 13mm speaker. Where do you get the speaker from? I would like to the the most sound out of my 45 tonner, where can i get a 13mm 4 ohm speaker at? Andy recommendations?

    • @defaultname2498
      @defaultname2498 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You said in the video, 4 ohm is your best option to get the loudest sound, is 4 ohm the max? Could u go lower? Will there be better sound out of it? Is there any options available?

    • @defaultname2498
      @defaultname2498 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I looked at Litchfield station online, and on their site shows 4 ohms, but what you recommended showed 8 ohms. I don't think i see one. What is the item name and or # for the speaker? Also what is the sound set in the decoder that you chose? "Cat 44"? I think thats the closest option am seeing.
