Maybe bootlegs wouldn’t be such a problem if theater was more accessible to the demographic these musicals are being made for lol

That's my issue, I understand the production crew and actors feelings, as someone who loves theater I know how hard they work, but the theater business itself it's what makes people force themselves to look at bootlegs cuz these tickets are quiet expensive.
Good thing is that there's talks that at least on Broadway tickets might become cheaper for causal viewers to see productions in order to recover all the lost income they've lost. Hopefully they will actually make it cheaper and leave it like that.

but...but... there are like thousands of people who are absolutely never gonna see the show bc a) country will never become part of a tour / accessibility to theatre is v v scarce b) have not enough money to see shows regularly c) other physical circumstances w/c cannot allow them to see
this is what limits theatre so much that it gives off an 'exclusive prestige' to it, like making theatre only for ppl who CAN see it. it makes ppl like me excluded from it.
i do respect the actors, the creators, etc. when there's a western musical touring in my region, i absolutely see it and vow to never watch a bootleg of it.
but what about other musicals? are we supposed to be left in the dark while the rest of the theatre community thrives without us? that awfully seems like privilege, and not a lot talks abt that.

Well, not everyone has the money to go see a musical in theatre. I understand that shows are very hard to produce. I understand that they cost a lot of money. But many people still go to see shows in theatres, so bootlegs really aren't affecting much. People who have the money to go will go, people who don't will watch bootlegs when available. I hardly see an issue. Also, how are bootlegs theft? It's recording a show for people who can't go to see it live. The actors and producers and such are STILL GETTING MONEY! Again, where the hell is the issue?

Ok so I may be 5 months late but I highly disagree with this comment, Making a musical is very expensive, paying for costumes, theatre rent, stage design, income towards employers etc. If producers just let everyone see shows for free, money wouldn't be coming which would mean no show. Now I know musical theatre isn't accessible for everyone but that still doesn't mean that they should make a pro shoot for free or for a $30 rate. Now producers need to get money to create more shows for the world to see, most shows don't see a revenue until 2 or 3 years from the initial opening so which would mean most professional productions would be a flop as most shows don't stay in production for more than 2 years, so basically producers loose money.

A year late but-it is theft. Did they get permission to record? No? Then that’s not legal. It’s taking their performance and the work of the creative team without their permission.

Honestly i feel like proshots would be the way to go?? It invites more people to watch, and if they wanna release it on streaming or even in theatres, i’m sure people would much rather pay $15 to see it than $200 to see them live (esp if they’re not familiar with it yet). And if a tour happens to come around, people who have seen the proshot would be more likely to feel inclined to watch it live, or even want to go see them on broadway or the west end 🤷🏽‍♀️

    • @kyrarhoades514
      @kyrarhoades514 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Part of the issue is how expensive it is to film and produce a proshot. Also, while lots of people would go see theatre live if they can, some money could be lost still.

As someone from Mexico who loves musicals, I get where sh'es coming from but there's literally no other way for me to see this shows. We're in the middle of a pandemic, workload is so big i never have free time and there's not a lot of money. I personally watch shows in bootlegs in hopes one day I'll have enough money to go watch them live, and they hype me up more.

I kinda understand where she's coming from. But then again, she's still getting paid either way right? The bootlegs would only interfere with sales if, say, the entirety of the musical was on a streaming platform. Most musicals can't do that, due to how many profits they get. Hamilton, of course, is the exception.

The thing is, there wouldn’t be any bootlegs if Broadway were reasonably priced. It costs a lot of money to watch a show when that money could have gone towards paying off loans or bills. I’m not defending anyone or anything. Bootlegs aren’t okay and yes, they are illegal. But, if Broadway was more reasonably priced then we wouldn’t be here in the first place.

I know that bootleg is illegal, but in my country, we rarely have tour. Theatre even not popular in my country. Bootleg is the only access I can get to the theatre,it introduced me to the theatre. Ever since then, I found out that theatre is what I want to be in the future, it inspired me to become a set designer. With the bootleg, it really motivates me to set a goal of flying to US and UK to watch the live performances,Im not rich, but this is definitely on my bucketlist. I'm not saying bootleg is legal but consider the problem the fan might faces, in a way bootleg helps us too.

I just wanna say the comment thing isn’t that valid of an add on. There are many fan pages who post pictures of them who still get comments from other people spewing hate. They’d see hate whether it was on a TH-cam video or not. But I really think west end and Broadway should just do pro shots. Just a nice 3 or 4 cameras set up around the stage, it doesn’t need to have all that zoom action, effects, blah blah, they can do what they usually do and people would still pay for it. I understand it’s illegal and that I’m late as hell, but a mass majority of fans are willing to pay if the shows come to them but it’s them and their production team who never go to those places to make more money, so why not build fans off the bootlegs, or possibly proshot s, until they can come to those different areas

The people who defend bootlegs don't quite understand how much work goes into a musical, it's insane how expensive and time-consuming it is for every single member of the creative team, the tech team, and the actors. So when you make all of that work accessible for free on the internet you're hurting the profit all that hard work, I understand that not all musicals are available for streaming, which is a huge issue, if they could get professional recordings of every show that would be amazing, but that's not the reality, because that's incredibly expensive. So please enjoy cast recordings instead of bootlegs.

I can only speak for myself but I'm just not able to afford to buy plane tickets, book a hotel, and then pay up to $200 for show tickets; and that's just for me as someone living in the states it's even more expensive for someone living in Europe.
