    Six the Musical won the Tony for Best Original Score for a reason. Composers Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss weave musical complexity into their song storytelling, and this is exemplified in their use of the classic folk song Greensleeves. By tracking Greensleeves from the beginning of the show to the end, we can chart the journey of the Queens and see them grow beyond their historical baggage. In one word, it's the Historemix!

    I don't know if it means anything in this context, but also as Cathrine Parr is setting up her song, she has Joan play a "B flat major 7", which you said was part of the chord that made the wii-i-ives at the end fit- it clicked for me when you mentioned it, and i dunno if it has any meaning to this whole thing-

    • @HowardHoMusic

      I was wondering when someone might mention this! Do you know what a B flat major 7 is? It's a B flat major chord PLUS an A natural. I didn't include this in the video, because I'm not sure if this was intentionally to tie into Greensleeves, but it is fun to speculate. Thanks!

      i live in scotland and have been my whole life and my uncle is a lord and he can confirm these title selling sites are pure scams as well as the fact that countryside land will be owned by lords themselve and theres not much free country land for sale. farming land of around 50x50meters can run you over 40k pounds coz the countryside is protected and private owned by multiple different people. and they cant buile trees there coz the land is 99% alreadt owned.

    Anne Boleyn is particularly the one wearing green sleeves cuffs as she will never be able to shake off being the famous, decapitated wife of Henry VIII. You’re talking about a reference to the last six notes of green sleeves. If you juxtapose the order of the fates of the wives over this reference , two of the clashing notes are over the wives who were beheaded and the last clashing is over the one who survived. Could this be intentional?

      Perhaps. Although each wife suffered in her own way being tied to Henry, the two who were beheaded upsettingly died at his decree. Then, you have the lucky one who got away entirely, outliving him. On top of that, I feel Anne Boleyn holds notoriety as one of the easier names to recall of his 6 wives, while Katherine Howard is recognizable for dyeing so young and, I believe, having the shortest period as Henry VIII's wife.

      @SWein66 ปีที่แล้ว +65

      @@apurplekitkat Anne of Cleves (Anna in Six) was queen for 6 months; Jane Seymour died after 1 year and nearly 5 months; Katherine (spelled this way in Six but not in history) Howard was killed after 1 year and 6 and a half months, so she had the third-shortest time as queen. The next is Anne Boleyn, just under 3 years; then Catherine (again, how spelled in Six) Parr, 3 and a half years until Henry’s death. And, of course, Catherine (Catalina) of Aragon was queen for just shy of 24 years, until her marriage was annulled. I was curious about this a while ago so looked it all up. i LOVE how the change of greensleeves happens. I expected the writers to have them go down for it to fit over the harmony, but instead the harmony changes around them. they didn't change themselves to fit in, the context in which we see them is shifted or altered so we see/hear them how they are musically meant to be heard. like.. literally, what the show is about, US shifting OUR perspective to see the queens as THEY tell it, not just as the six wives of Henry VIII. this show just keeps getting better.

    Been looking forward to your analysis of Six - such a great show. (Also hoping for the Beetlejuice musical, by the way.)
    Buying lordships is nonsense, though - the Court of Lord Lyon, herald for Scotland, has made it clear that such small grants of land (particularly as the plot is sponsored rather than actually purchased) is not sufficient to qualify for the conventional title of laird. It's also worth noting that a laird, while linguistically cognate, is *not* a lord and doesn't authorise anyone to claim to be one - putting it on one's passport, for instance, is technically changing one's name rather than gaining a title.
    It's a clever way of fundraising - essentially letting people adopt a patch of land much like one might "adopt" a penguin at a zoo - but one shouldn't believe there's any real ownership or title involved.

    Ohhhh, very clever! Looking forward to seeing Six in January when it hits Brisbane! Funny thing is- I really, really did not want to like this musical! I thought it was a stupid idea- I actually have history degree majoring in Tudor England so I'm taking this musical rather personally, haha! (PS Anne was INNOCENT, victim of circumstance!)

      Anne was a political pawn, she had no say in anything! I find it a poetic justice it was of her own blood that sorted England out afterwards.

      Agree re Boleyn’s innocence. Her crime was not basically having a male child. I appreciate the re-casting of Howard’s story and feel so sad about her short and tragic life.

    I find it so interesting how you say that the tune is used despite not making sense. Maybe that’s why it was used. To show how Henry’s “love” for them was a lie. And I just noticed how the part of the tune repeated the most is “Alas my love, you do me wrong”. Really gives you something to think about. 🤨
