The "road noise" could also be a wheel bearing starting to go. I have had that happen on several cars, not just Fords either. If the car has been sitting a long time then you may be able to drive the noise out of it, just get the grease flowing. But if it gets worse then a wheel bearing check may be in order. Or better yet, check them anyway. Beautiful car!

I wish I could still find one for 6 grand with the 428 like 20 years ago. But now I'd have to expect at least 3 times that. Obviously 65 mph (at the end of this vid.) is just a walk in the park for it. And that 428 is a good motor to have in the '66 T-Bird since it's such a heavy car. But that could be easily forgotten once someone test drives it. I may be more of a GM and Mopar person than Ford, but this car, along with the Mustangs, is one major reminder as to why I don't dislike Ford at all and still love some of the stuff it made.

There is also an exhaust manifold leak as well.

Nice. Blue cap on a/c compressor denotes conversion to R-134.

The Bird is one the most difficult sleds to work on that was ever made. This one needs a tune up and muffler leak or gaskets leaking. As far as looks the Bird in 66 was the best out of the 64, 65 or 66 series. Light years ahead of anything in 66

I personally think the '65 is the best of the series. I don't like the front end, or the fake raked hood scoop of the '66.

      @@dj33036 I am greedy. I want a 65 & 66 & 67 4dr. I would be complete.

J P What makes them hard to fix, besides the power windows and things like that?

@@ChrisStockslager they were the flagship car for Ford, so they threw everything at it...it was built on the same line as Lincoln's, so that says something. I speak from experience...Its a small, densely packed car, so everything is hard to get at, especially in the interior. and *everything* is vacuum powered...locks, hvac, rear window vent, ebrake release...hundreds of feet of old cracked vacuum hose and leaky little actuators...typically the dash has to come out to fix vacuum leaks adequately. First year for disc brakes, and the 4-piston technology complicated and not quite ready yet. the drivetrain is bullet-proof, and while I would absolutely want the 428, be prepared for horrific mpg. When sorted, there truly is no mid-60's car to equal the flair bird for luxury, class, and distinction, with the exception maybe of its competitor, the 1st gen Riviera. Aftermarket support for the bird is quite good.

@@steves4639 Thank you for such a thorough response! I actually bought a 1966 Thunderbird with the 428 which arrived early November! It’s been in the shop for a little bit over two weeks. No surprise repairs, and it will be fairly expensive, but I’m super excited to have more things righted on the classy old lady. 😄

Don Desnoo Yes they did! They were famous for that. Very sloppy linkage.
At the same time the emergency brakes would automatically release! Bad news!

Oh yeah 428 and C6. Edit, ah it must be an early 1966/428 I see it has the older Cruise-o-matic and NOT the C6.
