Re-Watching My Old Smoke Photography Video

  • Way back in July 2009 (13+ years ago) I made a short video about photographing smoke from incense sticks. Today I'm watching it again for the first time in a long time.
How does the content hold up? How has my camera and flash kit changed? Is the video even relevant today? I contemplate all these questions and a lot more.
Re-watch along with me. The original video is here • Smoke Photography made...

One thing to be said about your content back then versus now; the technology has definitely improved but you can easily spot a natural-born instructor/teacher that actually has passion for what he/she presents in every video year over year.

I am a full time photographer/ videographer now and I've learnt a huge percentage of the skills from your videos.I think I remember this one as well, but I definitively remember when you made a portrait with speedlight and a softbox, with your daughter on the beach with pebbles. I live on Bognor so I watched it a lot of times and I practiced it with the same equipment on the same wavebreakers! So, Thank you, you should know that these videos shaped careers, and and a lot more!

I bought my first DSLR camera right around the time when you shot that video (and many more) 13 years ago. Your channel has been very, very helpful and inspired me to quickly skip the "auto settings" and learn more (and buy a lot more expensive gear over the years, sigh...!).
Your teaching style is fantastic, especially for beginners, because you always explain things slowly, methodically and with great detail. As a newbie, I have sometimes felt stupid because I didn't know some of the things that others referred to as "the basics that everybody knows and hence would be unnecessary to explain", but you always made me feel that being inexperienced just means you're on the first leg of an exciting new voyage. Thank you for that.

Hi Steven. I was an Olympus user for years before I became an ambassador, so that should tell you something useful. Other then my fellow photographers, no one cares about the name stuck on the front of the camera, they're only interested in the results. If I quit being an OM SYSTEM ambassador tomorrow I'd stick where I am as I'm deeply invested in the ecosystem. If I was starting from scratch, I've no idea if would be OM, Fuji, Sony etc. I guess it would be down to the deals on offer and what my friends used (borrowing kit is always handy 😉)
