      Cool! If you see enough roots to sustain the tree above it, you should be able to separate it. Good luck!

    Your videos inspired me to set my first air layers about a month ago. Still no roots. I'm not sure if I chose the correct spot on the branch or if I cut enough of the cambium layer.

    • @MomijiEn

      I had to wait for a month and half to two to see roots on some air layers so be patient! 🙂

    Looks great that new tree, as your video! Thanks for sharing. What's the cultivar? I seems to have a little bit rougher bark, isn't it?

    • @MomijiEn
      @MomijiEn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad to hear you enjoyed it! 😁 Actually I don't know the cultiver but the tree is old enough to develop white bark on the trunk.

    also, are those little solar powered garden lights? they hold up with the rain well?

    • @MomijiEn
      @MomijiEn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some are solar powered, some are not. Solar ones work for 2-3 years here in general then stop producing much light or stop working...

    I have had a lot of success this year with my air layers, however, one tree is plagued. On my sharpes Pygmy. Two have developed callouses and no roots and one has developed a callous and then all the foliage browned off. The branch is still green and has not died completely. Did I cut too deep? It was about 12 weeks from air layer to foliage dying back. Thanks 🙏

    • @MomijiEn
      @MomijiEn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on the tree too. I would try it again next year without any rooting hormone.

      Logic in saying no rooting hormone? They were suppose to be an easy rooter too?

    • @MomijiEn

    good job as always! my air layers exploded roots way earlier than last year, could be due to the heat wave we've experienced this summer? Im thinking of harvesting 1 tomorrow, I'm a bit worried tho for possible another warmer weather ahead.

    • @MomijiEn
      @MomijiEn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice! That may be the reason. You should wait a bit longer if you are worried about protecting the separated one dying another heat wave although it should be fine if kept in the shade and watered regularly.

    Nice air layers! I did this on a chinese elm at the base to get a better nabari but not many roots came out. The tree has all its leaves and is surviving im wondering what should i do if i dont get enough roots by winter.? I did this early june.only thing i did differently i put it in a pot and didnt wrap the air layer. Can i get more roots next spring?

    • @MomijiEn
      @MomijiEn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! a pot with soil should work too. You may need to cut slightly above again to stimulate the root growth next time.

      @@MomijiEn thank u for all ur help and replys. I did everyrhing i was supposed to . I put root hormone and took all the cambium layer off and still not many roots. I guess ill have to protect it from the winter if i dont get any new roots but we have a few more months to go. I got my hands on a aureum and thats the tree u have that i like but it is very small! They are from the shirasawanum group. Love that foilage! Anyway thanks for the tips !

    I want to cut my air laying before spring or early spring pls.

    • @MomijiEn
      @MomijiEn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The best time to air layer is mid to late Spring. If you do it now, it may work but success rate will be lower.

    I tried my first air layering this year. Unfortunately all leaves of the branch dried out and fell off.😂 Not sure what went wrong since I always kept the moss moist…
    I wonder if I should just keep it there for a bit longer an see what happens…

    • @MomijiEn
      @MomijiEn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most likely you may have cut the bark a bit too deep and cut the water line. You can leave it to see what might happen if branches are not dying.

    • @MomijiEn
      @MomijiEn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes, a tree can drop all leaves from the air layered area due to a shock.

    • @MomijiEn

      You can use both organic and non organic fertilizer a. It depends on the develop stage of each tree.
