    Awesome video mate. As you said, real lucky to have a backyard like that with the worst of the cost only being a bit of sweat. Good call on the stag meat and a dicey spot to bone out!

      Thanks Josh, it sucks leaving meat behind but something didn't feel right about that animal 😕

    I am really enjoying your vids . Your easy going manner is just right for kiwi hunters . Can I make a suggestion . How about a low cost subscription service like Patreon for say 2-3 dollars a month for a few "how to vids " . Topics that would interest me would be Field dressing, then maybe breaking an animal down properly as would a butcher . how about knife sharpening and maintenance , bush craft , packing in , packing out , rifles , scopes etc..
    I am sure you are a man of many talents and experiences and i,d be happy to send you a few bucks a month to see some of that wisdom and experience .
    cheers

    Another great vid. Have to agree, something special about solo trips as you get older. Make your own pace, stop when you like. Brilliant. Can't imagine hunting without my dog for company tho. Look forward to your next vid.

    Very nice that'll keep you fit. Here's hoping they don't want to burn the huts down like they are in the Urewera. DOCs quite happy for them to do it for SAFETY reasons we do not want them looking elswhere.

    Awesome mission mate, have been down those guts before and it’s pretty sketchy, pulled pin once as my gut feeling was telling me that it was not a good idea.
    Looking forward to getting back there in the new year, but not for 24hrs 😂
    Talk to Megan @ the bct about giving the biv a spruce up, I’ll be keen to volunteer.

      I was wondering if it’s going to get a new logo, the one it has now is pretty iconic. The stock doc ones are a bit dull.

      Hi Greg, I heard BCT had a plan to refurbish BRB and it almost got done last April, not sure what the hold up is but I'd be more than happy to sling some paint etc It's getting old like the rest of us and needs some love

  • @gregwells8764
    @gregwells8764 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    thats some sketchy ground, no place for a novice. did you find out what the stink was under the biv ? good thing you culled that stag from the herd, def not quite right. do Sika get TB ? always enjoy your hunts, looking forward to the next one. cheers

    • @BackridgeButcher
      @BackridgeButcher  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Greg, pretty sure they can get TB but I think (don't quote me) it's never been found in the Kaweka sika heard, it's always pesky possums that have it. Sika are crazy animals and can bounce back in condition very fast once the food is available, numbers might be slightly high in there at the moment or winter knocked him around. Not sure who died under the biv!

    Hey mate. You ever had issues with bone taint in the meat if leaving them overnight?

    • @BackridgeButcher
      @BackridgeButcher  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate, I certainly don't recommend leaving them overnight if you can avoid it. Generally retrieve the backsteaks and hindquarters, remove the bones from the hindquarters on the spot and cool all the meat. If any green tinge or smell dump it...
