Could you possibly tell me what would be a fair price for an average Model 73' .... I picked one up this weekend that showed up at my local gunshop .. serial # is in the 180s'xxx ,,, it is complete , w/dust cover , trapdoor buttplate ,... has normal handling wear ,, few light scratches on the barrel which has more patina than bluing .... the wood is nice with only the slightest crack ( 1/4" inch , barely noticable) , where the stock meets the receiver on the left side ....no dents , cracks or gouges anywhere else ,, no checkering ,, and a weathered dark finish ..... The barrel rifling is worn , but obvious and pronounced ....I'll tell you that I paid $2500.00 for it ..... I'm not necessarily a collector , I simply buy what I like ..... also , it's a 38-40 caliber ......Any insight or info would be greatly appreciated ..... Thank you

Hell man if you have an original unmolested model 73 in any caliber you have something that is special in it's own rights and will usually fetch a hefty sum if you are interested in selling it. I am so lucky to have the one I have that has been handed down in my family from father to son for 5 generations so far and soon to be a 6th and 7th generation. And this rifle and other firearms of the same era all shoot fine and function flawlessly. I guess there was something to how fine a group and how accurate the 1 of 1000 rifles are. But I don't think that they were all that much more accurate than most standard Winchester rifles. The Winchesters I have have beautifully crafted barrels and the lands and grooves of the rifles are in excellent shape. After no telling how many bullets and powder went down the barrels they are still extremely shiny and smooth. I would love to shoot against one of these rifles with mine, I think there wouldn't be a very big difference in shot placement.

I'm happy to see so much appreciation for the Model 73! And likewise I too would be curious to see this gorgeous rifle in action alongside a standard Winchester to see if it's accuracy lives up to the renown.

I have a 1873 that I’m having it restored now. It was made September 1 1873 # 128 . I have been told that it a rare on by having sling rings installed by Winchester. I am looking for the rings right now so I can complete it to the way it was made. Would you know who or where I might find these rings? Thanks for your time.

I would like to know how the sling rings are mounted on the barrel end of the rifle, you know how the rings are attached and specifically where are the mountings located? What configuration is your barrel?

@@TBullCajunbreadmaker The ring mounts by the base mount that is pressed on the mag tube just under the fore stock mount ring or clamp. The ring must be screwed on due to the mount having threads. I have been told that the upper sling loop ring has a hole that a screw goes thru to attach it to the base. I only have the base on my rifle.

@@chrislettenmaier6822 Thanks Chris, I appreciate that information. Now all I have to do is identify why I have a dovetail cut into the underside of the octagon barrel about 1/3 the way from the muzzle. Evidently it is for mounting something under the barrel. It looks just like a slot for tapping in a fixed sight or something like that. As a matter of fact it is cut exactly like the front sight slot. I'll get an answer from somewhere sooner or later. Thanks again. Good luck on your rifle.
