You were so magnanimous and sang so beautifully I had to search you on the tube. So glad I did!😊❤😊
Hi Justin! I have some questions about your not-too-personal and professional life in Switzerland: 1) I'm curious whether you've picked up any of the native language or day to day culture being that you've lived in Switzerland for a number of years. Is there anything special you've been teaching your daughter about England as she grows up so that she will learn about your roots? Do you think she has a concept that you come from another place? 2) I'd like to know if you listen to any Swiss music and whether you can make an episode with a sampling of the best bands and artists you believe Switzerland has to offer (past and/or present). Would you say that the Swiss music scene influences some of your musical choices these days, or do you still mostly resonate with US and UK based music? Thanks for being the treasure you are and giving us some daily laughs and musical culture! -- Marsha

And it's been an awesome journey to write and learn songs on the bass. I would encourge every guitar player to also get a bass and learn the bass parts to every song you know on guitar. Just knowing the ins & outs of the bass parts to the songs you are playing will help broaden your musical perspective, especially if you're a song writer, it's a must.

Called out? Maybe you should start a band, Justin. Squire Classic Vibe P-Basses are really nice for a reasonable price. They're nicely made, and sound thicc. Around $450 'Murrican dollars.
As I get on in life and the new music I hear interests me less and less I am trying to move away from saying things like "That's a bad song/band" to "It's not to my tastes". But I am glad to see that I am correct in saying Maroon 5 are shite. Thanks Justin
For the person thinking about buying a bass, I own two Harley Bentons guitars and they are really fantastic guitars for the money. Much nicer than the cheap old Squier Strat that I first started on back in the day. Any beginner would be very happy with a Harley Benton and probably wouldn't feel the need to immediately replace it once you start getting more into playing.
6:25 I always play You Shook Me All Night Long's intro starting at the 7th fret before moving down, it sounds much better and I'm pretty sure Angus does it that way. As for the D/F# in Highway to Hell, I fret it as an open D, and use my thumb for the F#. Easy!
Justin, no need to take any notice of the odd crazy comment. You just carry on doing what you want especially as its Great Content and informative to hear your views on Music and Muscians.
Hi Justin! Thank you so much lyrics “Love you so much, like a rabbit loves its hutch”. I often sing it to my wife who gets annoyed, as she doesn’t think a rabbit would like being in a hutch 😂 Keep up the great work, and I hope to see you live again soon. The two Darkness gigs I’ve seen have been two of my favourite ever shows.
On the bass question just go for it - I learnt using tab (got the tab for the Beatles and Smiths songs easy enough ) then just played along to the songs to pick it up - also a book on where to find all the chord progressions and scales on different parts of the fret board.. then keep practicing that. Adding more songs to your list..You don’t need an expensive bass. After that go down to a local jam night and ask to play - find someone who knows a song you know - or just play a blues jam with other musicians will give you confidence - even just playing the root notes in time will help develop an ear for the chord changes too.
I have a request Justin, would you consider recording an acoustic version of Christmas Time (Don't let the Bells End) for us here, and make it available on iTunes ? Oh, and if you could sneak the Justin Hawkins Rides Again theme tune into it that would be magnificent. Thank You.
Because he played the single greatest concert I have ever seen in my life hands down. April 13, 2004 at Stubbs in Austin. I left that amphitheater without a face as it had been rocked clean off.
So glad you picked Shook Me All Night Long - one of the best intros and I love playing it! Super comments video as well - this channel just gets better and better
Oh, I have one question. The northern part of England is famous for great music. What do you think about The Fall and the unfortunately late Mark E. Smith? I believe there aren't many unique bands in the history of music like The Fall. It would be nice to hear from you or see the video reaction.
I love your example song. I believe you were about to sing the Sasquatch song by Ten D. BTW I like singing the upper key to your lower key harmony. Thanks Justin. You're alright and airtight.
Hey Justin, I'm really fascinated by yours & Dan's aptitude for music. Dan mentioned in an interview that he played drums first, then bass, then guitar and I've seen you on here tinkling the ivories and now pulling out a bass guitar. I wondered if you both had music lessons/studied music in your formative years or did you both come across your talents more organically. Are there any other instruments you can play? The sitar?
Your breakdown explanations of the opening riff are pure fire.. so much can be learned from your explanation. This also applies to every opening intro you do with the podcast.. that little bit of improv is magick. We can see your fingers and all... the G chord explained etc...
I think Justin when you played Highway to hell, moving the F# up to G the first time is the right way to do it. If you see a clip of Mally playing it that's what he does. Keep up the good show.
Another fine video fella! I’m not even remotely musically talented, I just enjoy listening to new things, and learning. Thanks for helping educate and entertain a knuckle dragger like myself.
Hey Justin. For the fan who said he is thinking about starting to play bass, first: dude absolutely do it! Now a few suggestions. I have been playing bass in bar bands around Austin, Texas and now San Antonio Texas for 30+ years. It’s still so much fun that even at the ripe old ago of 61 I keep doing it. On choosing a bass. I played a Peavey T-40 for years when I first started. It was a beast. Very heavy, but… and this is the important parts. 1) it was cheap and 2) the action was pretty good so it didn’t kill my left hand. Look for something in a price range your comfortable with, just pay attention to how hard you have to press the strings to get a good tone. You don’t want to have to work too hard to avoid fret buzzing. Next, learning tab is fine. However if you really get in to it learning a bit of music theory will be helpful. It helps to know what someone means when the say a song is 1,4,5 or goes to the relative minor at the bridge. Totally not necessary but opens up being able to just sit in with bands without really knowing the songs. When I first started I spent a lot of time learning the notes on the neck, learning some theory, etc. the payoff is stuff like recently I sat in for a 45 minute set with a band and had never played most of the songs, but pulled it off just fine because of the work I put in. All that being said the most import thing is to start, pick up a $200 used bass, and figure it out. There are loads of great TH-cam videos for playing bass. Tons of covers of songs with bass tabs. Playing bass is the most fun you can have with your clothes on… or off if your Flea.
Hi Justin! Love your stuff, you’re a legend, honestly 🤟🏻 would you consider to present/talk about independent and unsigned artists as well, every once in a while ? That would be very cool in my opinion. Love you man, keep going!
I agree 100% about "finding the pocket" when learning bass, so working with a drummer is paramount in finding how to lock in, making the rhythm section cook. Rather than just learning tab, learn intervals and how they add to simple root note playing. Learning the function and use of modes rather than endless scales memorisation; once you know the major/minor and relative major/minor relationships, you can pretty much know the "flavour" of intervals, and what they add. For modes, knowing the half-steps and which note is the characteristic of that mode, such as the #4 in Lydian. The circle of fifths is a great tool. Numeric tabs don't teach that much really.
Thanks for all your efforts Justin. Are you working on or have done any experimental bizarre projects in the past? Also would you ever record jazz style with your kind of voice? Thanks Az
I bought my first bass guitar a couple of weeks ago. Cost £40 with a practice amp. It probably doesn’t sound ready for playing Wembley, but I’m having loads of fun just trying to play along with my favourites. Just need to get myself some groupies now..
Love that fleece Jus mate. ACDC openers, just made my day, yaasss! ✊ Guitar openers that are instantly recognisable (Smoke on the Water, Black Night) Having a bit of a Deep Purple moment, especially Richie Blackmore's guitar. In Australia, our ACDC is called Acca Dacca by the fans.
Why do some people critique people who critique musicians? Why would they watch people who critique musicians if they don't like people who critique musicians?
I know you probably won't see this Question but here it goes anyway. Is there any chance that you could possibly have your Brother Dan on your channel one day? I am a huge fan of The Darkness. I think you are Amazing, but I also feel as though your Brother could quite possibly be one of the best Rock Rythem Guitarists ever.. I would love to hear from him and what he thinks makes a good rhythem guitarist and I would love to see the Interaction between the both of you. I truly believe that with you performing in the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert and with the success of your TH-cam Channel, that The Darkness will become a Huge name again.. So much exposure and everyone just loves your videos.. So many People are only now just finding out about The Darkness now in 2022.. Cheers and thank you for the Videos
Dear Justin,I’ve just discovered your channel and I love it.I’m a big Darkness fan and particularly love Easter is cancelled particularly “live’til I die”particularly the sensational guitar swagger particularly just after the last chorus!!particularly that fantastic growl!!….if only we could bottle that magical feeling.Very best wishes Greg
But what I will say, personally...I CANT STAND making words fit after the fact. I really to tend to try and let inspiration just hit and write the lyrics on the fly...I CAN NOT be trying to count syllables and find the words to fit. Feels too contrived at that point.
@@Postmortumaz yes!!! I tend to write key words on a big page and the occasional full line...then when I do a vocal take I just look at the page and go for it. The end of a song called "hail hail hallelujah" used that technique and the entire vocal on innoculate the time used a similar system. once I think too much things get predictable and boring...I like just going for it haha. The Bowie technique was used on several albums of his... As if he needed to 🤣
Hi Justin Would you please consider making some kind of theory lesson for guitar ,showing us your favourite systems to get the basics learnt once and for all ? Many thanks
When you get together with friends you discuss different topics and one usually asks them their opinion on things. This is the same thing here. Justin is talking and critiquing other music/bands, just like you would ask a friend. It's ok. Definitely ok. Don't fret.
Justin…what do you think of spacerockers Hawkwind? You’ve never mentioned them but are they an influence? Space ritual is the best live album ever….I’ve seen them several times and they always put on a great show…. You’re channel is awesome.
@@postpunk6947 Same here! Saw them here in the states at Toad’s Place, New Haven, CT in 1995. Definitely a top 10 life experience! Best Hawkwind album in my opinion: “Chronicles of the Black Sword” based on the Michael Moorcock Elric book series. “Live Chronicles” is a double live album and even better!

Much nicer than the cheap old Squier Strat that I first started on back in the day. Any beginner would be very happy with a Harley Benton and probably wouldn't feel the need to immediately replace it once you start getting more into playing.
I want your wardrobe ! Love your channel.thank you for being here.
6:25 I always play You Shook Me All Night Long's intro starting at the 7th fret before moving down, it sounds much better and I'm pretty sure Angus does it that way. As for the D/F# in Highway to Hell, I fret it as an open D, and use my thumb for the F#. Easy!
I really enjoy your critiques. Honestly I just really appreciate your thoughts and opinions on things. You’re very respectful to others 💙
I agree with your wife, that lyric always throws me too, but I always end up laughing at it. After all what else rhymes with “love you so much”? 😂
@@NinStardust >>After all what else rhymes with “love you so much”?
Better a hutch than a cooking pot……😬
It could be taken as an observance on the constraints of marriage.
A couple more options, for ending
I love you so much...
Lenny Kravitz loves it such.
Like a crab, it loves your touch.
Sending you love and light from my heart to yours❤keep doing what you're doing,it's wonderful seeing /listening to a real human being x
Continuing from the tribute bands would be great to see u do a video reacting to TH-cam cover song of the darkness songs :)
💗🙌
I think sometimes people don't understand the difference between "criticism" and "analysis".
You said anal
I feel like a lot of the times people don't understand most of what's going on with anything
So glad you picked Shook Me All Night Long - one of the best intros and I love playing it! Super comments video as well - this channel just gets better and better
Thanks!!
Oh, I have one question. The northern part of England is famous for great music. What do you think about The Fall and the unfortunately late Mark E. Smith? I believe there aren't many unique bands in the history of music like The Fall. It would be nice to hear from you or see the video reaction.
Keen for an episode on the fall
Ahh yes "The Fall"
I think because of Mark E"s distinctive vocals you either liked them or loathed them.
I liked them.
I love your example song. I believe you were about to sing the Sasquatch song by Ten D. BTW I like singing the upper key to your lower key harmony. Thanks Justin. You're alright and airtight.
Your videos make my day, sir. Thank you for the content🤘
Thank you! That''s lovely to hear :)
Hey Justin,
I'm really fascinated by yours & Dan's aptitude for music. The sitar?
Thanks Lorna!
Oh Justin you can't please everyone but I'm sure your pleasing many and I'm one, your music is great as is this channel, nice one Justin. 👍👍👍👊✌️.
Your the best one to talk about musicians you are a musician. Enjoy it so much, your polite and professional.
Great episode! I’d add for opening riffs You Really Got Me and Whole Lotta love….anything Zeppelin lol ! 🎸❤️🇨🇦
Another fine video fella! I’m not even remotely musically talented, I just enjoy listening to new things, and learning. Thanks for helping educate and entertain a knuckle dragger like myself.
Justin, such a great show. Keep The Darkness going!
I adore you and your musical analyses! Keep the insights coming, please!
Justin you are a gem. Keep it up
Thanks
Az
Maybe something along the lines of Derek Smalls ‘Jazz Odyssey’ perhaps. 😊
I bought my first bass guitar a couple of weeks ago. Cost £40 with a practice amp. It probably doesn’t sound ready for playing Wembley, but I’m having loads of fun just trying to play along with my favourites. Just need to get myself some groupies now..
I don't know if I'm just overtired so everything's funny, but 'mushroom grub people' has had me laughing for five solid minutes so far 😂😂
i believe that this is because you are in fact on mushrooms dear . .
@@NaughtyVampireGod , Good idea. I’m facing a brutal couple of hours. A micro dose would probably help.
Screamed at the beginning of each of their songs when heard at a party or pub.🤘😂
Why do some people critique people who critique musicians? Why would they watch people who critique musicians if they don't like people who critique musicians?
Hi Justin, what music have you introduced your daughter to, what has she enjoyed and what are you looking forward to introducing her to?
Now this would be fantastic. Great idea
“Rhythm”. R h y t h m.
It’s my favorite word.
"It's like the human centipede of musical instruments. You blow into one end..."
Outstanding.
Shook You , exactly what I was thinking too! Great riff
To create a vocal track, do you do what Jagger calls a vowel movement? Basically vocalizing gibberish, then find lyrics.
I find as I'm doing gibberish key words pop out and I riff off that.
But what I will say, personally...I CANT STAND making words fit after the fact. I really to tend to try and let inspiration just hit and write the lyrics on the fly...I CAN NOT be trying to count syllables and find the words to fit. Feels too contrived at that point.
@@mchamberlain7408 Bowie used to just clip lines out of magazines and paste them together. Daimond dogs
As if he needed to 🤣
@@Postmortumaz do you happen to write yourself? Would love to take a listen!
Don't fret.
I think Chasen should look up Dunning-Kruger Effect and read it aloud to a mirror for an hour. Make that two.
Nice. 🤣🤣
Justin Fucking Hawkins Rides Again 🎶
You sure did Kill It at the tribute show, Love your channel and thanks for all your hard work.
Justin…what do you think of spacerockers Hawkwind? You’ve never mentioned them but are they an influence? Space ritual is the best live album ever….I’ve seen them several times and they always put on a great show…. You’re channel is awesome.
Oh man. I love Hawkwind.
Yes!! Let's do Hawkwind!!
“Live Chronicles”
is a double live album and even better!
Hey Justin, it is insightful, informative, articulate and free of bias,I welcome it and keep it up mate, I think you dig into the melody and chords and lyric and share your observations, it is really welcome.
What an awesome privilege this channel is. I’m not even a massive The Darkness fan but I certainly am a fan of this channel 🙌🏼🎵🪄💣⭐️😇😎😘 talking chords and scales is the best
