This man is brilliant, articulate and right on! As a therapist for more than 30 years, I feel qualified to say that he tells the truth about trauma, addiction, ADHD--and especially society's miserably misplaced efforts to deal with these vital issues--in a clear and sincere way that almost cannot fail to be helpful.

I am thrilled by Gabor Matte's ideas & work. I have long believed everything he concludes from exoerience of his own self and of others. Not since Alice Miller have I read psychology that seemed, to me, comprehensive enough to embrace our spiritual hunger. And his solution to the world's suffering- génerously love & respond to kids-is also that which I have deduced over my own lifetime.

There are studies that have proven genetic susceptibility and the general theory is that environmental factors increase or decrease the chances that the susceptible person becomes addicted. At least that is my understanding. It is neither nature or nurture alone, but a combination of both.

This is a great video, although I think Dr. Maté contradicts himself. He says there is a susceptibility to addiction, but that genetics aren't the deciding factor. Why, then, do two children grow up in the same environment and one becomes an addict while the other doesn't? Perhaps nature and nurture both play a significant role.

Two children can grow up in the same home and not be in the same environment as children can be treated entirely differently.

You also need to understand that individuals, even siblings in the same home, develop & respond to stimuli individually.

We now also know that epigenetics and maternal stressors during pregnancy can alter the genetic expression in the fetus. In one child the mother could have had a stress-free pregnancy but during the second pregnancy she might be depressed or under economic pressure/ partner violence, etc. 2 kids, genetically similar, mostly similar environments but one child will have a different expression of their genes.
