would love to try tree firn. should I buy that instead of my usual coco chips & bark ? please lmk. I was about to buy in bulk for the first time along with some TPS Billions. ❤ my total in my cart is $142. So you think tree firn is more worth it considering how much I’m spending anyways?

heya! sorry for the late reply, your comment got buried under a few others and I missed answering it.
I honestly don't want to give blanket recommendations, tree fern is kind of a special-purpose thing that is very expensive to use as a generalist substrate. I know some youtubers seem to use it willy-nilly but where I live it's quite pricey (like, $45-50 for a 10L bag, or $135-150+ for a 40L).
if you're buying it in bulk and are getting a good price, or price is no object for you (lucky you, haha!), then go ahead and buy yourself a big bag. I still don't recommend using it with every plant, but I would use it for rehabs, imports that are acclimating, fancy plants (e.g. expensive anthuriums), or seedlings where it works great. I cut mine around 50/50 to 70/30 with perlite depending on the plant and its size.
also, it's not what I usually use (I work with semi-hydro for my bigger plants), but coco chips and bark are a pretty solid combo or even alternative to tree fern. you could mix those together pretty evenly for a very nice combo of textures and varied substrate sizes, and I bet you'd get solid results. I'm starting to add orchiata (power size) to my TF/perlite mix for larger seedlings and new imports to give the bigger roots something chunky to grab onto, and that's pretty close in size to orchid bark or coco chips.
hope this helps! and sorry for the delay. 😃
