I generally agree with you that allowing the free movement of the shoulder blades is actually healthier than to try to intentionally immobilize the shoulder blades in a "down and back" position. I favor allowing the shoulder blades to move naturally. However, there are movements in which I have found that trying to keep my shoulder blades back and down actually makes my shoulders feel better. For example, when performing dips, my shoulders feel much better if I try to keep my shoulder blades down and back (which as a consequence pushes my chest forward relative to my shoulders). I would say to experiment with shoulder blade positions during different movements to see which positions feel better on your joints and body overall.

Really appreciate the info. This video would be much more useful if you focused more on what is right rather than what is wrong. I get that you're trying to talk about the widespread misuse of the Back and Down concept, and you're debunking it well, but the valuable information (for me at least) would be the correct cue. You mention Back and Up, but don't spend much time on it. You mention a few different exercises where Back and Down is particularly wrong, but don't spend much time on what cues one should use in those contexts and what the shoulder parts are doing there. Just my advice. I like the content and just subscribed. Keep it up.
