Cool! Sorry about the Campulance. My daughter once had a VW Jetta that had mysterious 'fainting' spells where it would just turn off while moving! Eventually my husband found a small hole in a vacuum line that was causing the trouble 2 Weeks after getting it fixed...a guy crashed into the rear of it with his truck! Sometimes you just can't win!
Truck-Info: This kind of trucks are not build to transport THs or other stuff on a 24/7 basic. They can transport for a short time.-The motor the transmission gets destroid by the weight of such a load. Many dont know that and wonder if the truck gets out of service. Some trucks have a trailer hitch that IS NOT IN THE PAPERS OF THE TRUCK. A look in the service papers gives information...The ambulance itself is heavy weight- enough weigt for the engine..Frank technican from Germany
That makes so much sense! I see what you are saying - the engine on an ambulance may be huge, but the vehicle itself is so heavy the drive train already has all it can handle. So, I've learned from you that it is better to get something that was designed to be a tow vehicle than to slap a hitch on some random vehicle just because it has a lot of horsepower!
@@JJoy-bk8yr in Germany the GOV controlles the car building and repair world. If a truck has no "right to have a hitch you are in touble if you use one" In america there is nothing like the "TÜV" in germany. Al 2 years a truck or car is tested by a GOC agent- if the brakes are OK if the car is secure or if there is rust---then you are not allowed to drive the care you loos the plates. No plates no car. But some love meditation, crossing fingers and ZEN more ZEN reading a truck service INFORMATION.

@@frankpohl4377 Yes, in the state of Texas, USA. Before living here, I lived in the state of Missouri, which also requires annual inspections. Inspections vary by state. In Texas, they test brakes, horn, signal lights, and check paper work to make sure the car is insured. In California, state inspections include checking emissions.
As a fellow Kiwi, whom lives in NC, USA and has lived in 6 States West to East in 21 years. I totally agree that Americans are very friendly and helpful, as my American husband and I have had our share of breaking down in our vehicle either together or alone over the years. I Thoroughly enjoy your shows, keep them coming and I look forward to when you can start travelling abroad again to see more unique Tiny Houses and content. I used to think I'd get a bunch of racists. But whenever I visit the USA 🇺🇸 I'm amazed at how great the Americans are. It goes to show that a few rotten / racist apples/people can spoil the whole country in the eyes of the outside world. It's like when people who don't know South Africa say it's a country riddled with crime....

So awesome for you to experience what we call “southern hospitality” as every time in my life that I’ve had issues while in the south, so many random people have helped me. It’s truly a blessing to get that help when so needed.
You two could travel around to different towns and just talk about the restaurants, people, and the history and we would still love it! Of course, we would miss some of the tiny homes but ultimately you two, your videography, and how you tell the story are the show.
Leave it to you and Rasa to make such an uplifting video about a trip with so many bumps on the road! For a few years now I have tried just focusing on the positives of life, and it had been going well, even through the first year of covid. But in the past few months, it has felt like if it isn't one thing it's another. Still, I'm trying to focus on the positives again and this video certainly helps!
Thanks so much Jess. This has been a challenging time for everyone. There is so much uncertainty in the world right now and it's okay to not feel okay about it. Just do your best, and remember that it's okay to reach out for help when you need it. For me, while I can't travel and life has thrown us so many hurdles, I have tried to pour my attention into the things that I can do, such as working in my garden and tending house plants. It sounds really simple, but it has brought me a lot of joy and satisfaction.
@@livingbig thanks! I am fortunate enough to have a great support system. Just last weekend my mom and I were able to have a movie night at home and that helped unwind me a bit. Just doing the little, normal things is helpful.
It has been really hard, but it has also taught me to value the important things in life. To look for beauty and goodness all around me. Life is full of little blessings, like this video for example. Hugs from Michigan.

I'm glad you found kindness and help on the road here in the US. I have a similar story to tell about trying to get across Canada in an old Ford van. I'll shorten it.... When I finally got back into California and my brother-in-law stuck his head under the hood he said IF you get this home. lol, I had less than 350 miles to go, but whenever I had trouble someone always stopped to try and help. Pro truck drivers included. People are kind.
Warning, a bit of a long yarn ahead... This puts me in mind of a time when I and my late husband, recently married, were traveling around the Pacific Northwest in our very old Ford pickup fitted with a home-built wooden camper. We were in Seattle on a very busy street at the lunch hour, stopped pointed uphill at a traffic signal. When he popped the clutch to get the old pickup over the line to the flat cross-street, it performed admirably. Only problem was, the camper wasn't properly attached to the truck bed, so when the pickup went forward, the camper stayed where it was and fell to the floor. This was our only home at the time and I was totally heartbroken, as tourists were taking film shots of the situation (this was in the 80's!) and even the police who came by weren't too sure what to do next. Fortunately, they were able to call a tow company who knew. They very carefully (remember, the camper was now sat on the ground on an incline) jacked it up just far enough to put some heavy duty dollies under it, put a bumper panel across the back and convinced the police to use their police car (!) to get behind the panel and push the thing up onto the flat cross-street. Once there, my late husband was able to jack up the camper properly and get the pickup back underneath, secure it properly and we resumed our travels, thanks to about a half-dozen police and towing personnel. Oh yes, a day not to be forgotten! [PS: We were married for 21 years before he passed away and I can safely say that was the most exciting day we ever had traveling. I am now re-married to a very quiet and retiring British man and live in the English countryside, living the quiet life ;-) ]
Wow what a great story brings back memories of my trips with my late husband, those are precious memories and many of us I am sure relate to those days gone by fondly.
I can almost see the cottage you live in, natural stones, with roses and lavender, and lots of herbs and of course a small patio, a water feature and a bit of well kept lawn... a few beautiful old trees and I can hear the blackbirds already... I think I need to visit the UK for a vacation, don't you think?! ;-)
As a camper owning Seattle resident in the 1980s and an all-things-British enthusiast, your story made my day! Aren't those hills in Seattle something!? Queen Anne Hill, Capitol Hill, Beacon Hill... Those hills in San Francisco get all the camera time and all the attention in the movies but Seattle's hills are just as glorious and just as steep! I was a kid in the late 70s/early 80s, but my mom was never without her pickup and camper! Did you have a CB and an 8-track player? We did.

As someone who traveled across the states many times in my Saturn, I can absolutely empathize with your difficult moments of breaking down. AHHHHHH YES, the experience of buying "a very troublesome vehicle". My current car was horribly misrepresented - they meticulously crazy-glued the door handle together (that lasted a minute) and you could only open the hood with pliers (the guy seemed so thoughtful to have opened the hood beforehand) and there was a GENEROUS use of tape underneath the car (so it wouldn't make noise when you drove it). It was spotlessly clean on the interior and the guy had a good story. Hundreds of $$$ in repairs later ... and wondering WHY some people are so dishonest??? There's HUGE power in being KIND. Carry on.
I've done a lot of traveling, too, sometimes as a solo female, or just me and my handicapped youngest daughter. We've broken down a few times, and always, some good person has stopped to help us. There really are a lot of great people out there, especially in the rural areas.
Bryce and Rasa, this was an incredible video of your most difficult journey here in America. It’s great to hear that so many were kind and helpful. We really need alternative housing, most of us cannot afford homes and rental prices are through the roof. I must add that I love your beautiful videos from 🇳🇿 New Zealand. Quite a story there with your campulance! I really appreciate your attitude through the whole experience, it's always easy to get frustrated with how many times you broke down, but you seemed to have kept your cool.
One of the most wonderful things about the south is how kind people are when something like this happens. Amazing how people just come out of the woodwork to help get that engine moving... This has happened to me a couple times too (different vehicle but same experience). I love southern people.
You almost had me in tears. My heart swelled up with gratitude knowing you were able to experience the beautiful hearts and helping hands of people across America. ❤ I live in Oregon, and it's especially fun to know that your special tiny house found a home close by. Yes, people are good. When we peel away all the layers of differences, we all have an innate gift to reach out and help one another. When we approach someone who needs help we do not ask about their political inclinations and what-not; we just extend a helping hand. I believe in the innate goodness of people. I pray we never lose that no matter how crazy the world gets.
Enjoyed the video, Bryce. Of course, breaking down with a diesel in the South is pretty common. Glad you were able to get help and have positive benefits from a frustrating experiance. The best take away I got from this video/your troubles is that practicing Zen/seeing the positive in every frustrating situation might just be the most valuable talent someone can have!

I've gotten to a point when life (in general and in abstract) becomes a bit too much, I know all I need to do is sit and watch a few of your shows, and BAM... I'm reset and recharged. This episode just goes to show why that is. Your positivity in the times of crisis and frustration, as well as, you are able to keep up making videos even when y'all are in such intense lockdowns now, keeps me going. I sat here thinking of all the beater vehicles I've had from about 13 on (learned how to fix almost everything on a car with my single mom) and yet here I am at 51 with a van that is more computer than car and I have no clue when the electrical goes all wonky what to do with the ruddy thing! LOL I think I'm going to keep this episode in mind when I want to blister the paint off the walls and pull my hair out. Wow, what a string of dramas that shows no path in life is easy, and it's how we respond that matters! Good on all the kind people who assisted. We'd love to see you both back in the USA, but in lieu, I was thinking maybe Living Big should do once a month or so "Tiny House Shorts from Around The World. Have subscribers send a 3-4 minute speed tour of their Tiny Homes, with 4-5 featured homes per episode. You could lend commentary, and there ya go! A whole new variety of Living Big In a Tiny House, aside from the single in-person Tiny House editions. And a great way for us to share our creations with you two, and the rest of the world!
That’s too bad that things didn’t go as planned. My late husband always said that because of vehicles now all run by computer chips a vehicle can breakdown and you can’t work on them because it could be one of the computer chips that’s not working. Bummer. Covid has taken its toll on people and not being able to travel as part of your business has taken a chunk out of where you can go to. Your Tiny House videos are the best so keep them coming. We used to have exactly. the same problem with our old Volvo XC90 - I loved that car, we used to call it our big blue giant - but every now and then all the electrical systems would just shut off. It once happened in a tunnel without an extra accident stroke and not being able to even warn the truck that was driving behind us that all our (engine and electrical) power was off was very scary. I quickly threw the car into neutral restarted and thank goodness it worked again and I went straight back into Drive. After that, I decided it was time to let the car go..... I stuck with Volvo though, cause it's very dear to my heart

I've watched you for years! You and many others on you tube inspired us to build our own tiny house. We lived in our tiny house for 3 years in Oregon. 3 years ago we moved it to a piece of land near Mt Rainier Natl Park in Washington. Now it has become our own tiny house retreat.
That was hard to watch... my heart was actually aching for you guys... I've been living with my canine companion in my 2002 Mazda Protege since June 5, 2015. No fear EXCEPT when Mazda develops mechanical difficulties. My only income is SSDI, so there is no surplus to deal with automobile issues. Just as you did, I have found the states are full of kind-hearted people willing to help... I call them EBAs... I know what it's like to break down in the midwest of the US, especially when you're in very rural areas. I've moved to the UK and I wish they'd have more movement on tiny houses. I just did a 4500 mile trip from New York to New Mexico and back in my minivan. Thank God no car trouble, but I certainly met a lot of kind and helpful people on my journey. It is heartening to know they are out there!
If you ever get to tour the uk once this madness is over I would highly recommend touring around Wales, Cornwall and Scotland. You can rent camper vans from various places, the smaller the better though as the roads in those areas are pretty narrow and bendy
Despite all of your troubles on the road, as an American (Montana), I am so proud of the people you met along the way. There is so much focus on the negative in America it is bringing me to tears seeing the kind people that came out to give you a hand. I haven't been back for two years as well. I await the day we can all travel back and forth freely. I definitely want to stay at one of the tiny hotels in Oregon.

ambulances _seem_ like they'd be a great tiny house platform, but they aren't because of serious reliability and maintenance problems. also, they tend to use a lot of non-standard components/configurations, so finding parts and even mechanics on the road is often extremely difficult. *word to the wise!*
I have seen numerous tiny homes built or converted from ambulances. Many people are very happy with them as tiny homes. Many people make it work without the issues you mention.
They seem like they could make good campers, but probably they are not good tow vehicles. A mechanic in these comments explained that ambulances have enough load carrying their own heavy weight so when they are used to tow something they are overloaded.
@@JJoy-bk8yr that's exactly part of the problem...ambulances are very heavy vehicles, driven hard in hard conditions, and thus almost universally suffer from many mechanical issue.
@@sassylady2001 i have seen one or two videos of ambulances owners who haven't had problems, and dozens where they _did_ have tons of problems. lol, the only video of a happy owner i remember was where the owners were rich, and put like $30K into it before they even started their build. not what most people can afford, to say the least. 😂

Thank you for sharing your story. My husband and myself when we were younger traveled quite a bit. We had trouble many times while traveling but never enough to stop. We finally bought a new 5th wheel and had a good truck but it still had its problems. However we have wonderful memories of all the wonderful places we have been over the years. He is now 84 yrs.and we think about each trip we were able to take with thankfulness. We met so many nice people on the road also . We went to a Restaurant and was invited to their house and told to be sure to come and hook up at their house next time.
I felt sad watching and listening to your stories. So much struggle and yet felt very connected as you shared with rawness and vulnerability. Thank you ❤️

Truck-Info: This kind of trucks are not build to transport THs or other stuff on a 24/7 basic. They can transport for a short time.-The motor the transmission gets destroid by the weight of such a load. Many dont know that and wonder if the truck gets out of service.
Some trucks have a trailer hitch that IS NOT IN THE PAPERS OF THE TRUCK.

That makes so much sense! I see what you are saying - the engine on an ambulance may be huge, but the vehicle itself is so heavy the drive train already has all it can handle. So, I've learned from you that it is better to get something that was designed to be a tow vehicle than to slap a hitch on some random vehicle just because it has a lot of horsepower!

If a truck has no "right to have a hitch you are in touble if you use one" In america there is nothing like the "TÜV" in germany. Al 2 years a truck or car is tested by a GOC agent- if the brakes are OK if the car is secure or if there is rust---then you are not allowed to drive the care you loos the plates. No plates no car.
But some love meditation, crossing fingers and ZEN more ZEN reading a truck service INFORMATION.

@@frankpohl4377 Yes, in the state of Texas, USA. Before living here, I lived in the state of Missouri, which also requires annual inspections. Inspections vary by state. In Texas, they test brakes, horn, signal lights, and check paper work to make sure the car is insured. In California, state inspections include checking emissions.

I totally agree that Americans are very friendly and helpful, as my American husband and I have had our share of breaking down in our vehicle either together or alone over the years. I used to think I'd get a bunch of racists. But whenever I visit the USA 🇺🇸 I'm amazed at how great the Americans are. It goes to show that a few rotten / racist apples/people can spoil the whole country in the eyes of the outside world. So awesome for you to experience what we call “southern hospitality” as every time in my life that I’ve had issues while in the south, so many random people have helped me. It’s truly a blessing to get that help when so needed.
You two could travel around to different towns and just talk about the restaurants, people, and the history and we would still love it! Of course, we would miss some of the tiny homes but ultimately you two, your videography, and how you tell the story are the show.

For a few years now I have tried just focusing on the positives of life, and it had been going well, even through the first year of covid. But in the past few months, it has felt like if it isn't one thing it's another. Still, I'm trying to focus on the positives again and this video certainly helps!
Thanks so much Jess. This has been a challenging time for everyone. There is so much uncertainty in the world right now and it's okay to not feel okay about it. Just do your best, and remember that it's okay to reach out for help when you need it. For me, while I can't travel and life has thrown us so many hurdles, I have tried to pour my attention into the things that I can do, such as working in my garden and tending house plants. It sounds really simple, but it has brought me a lot of joy and satisfaction.

Just last weekend my mom and I were able to have a movie night at home and that helped unwind me a bit. Just doing the little, normal things is helpful.

I'm glad you found kindness and help on the road here in the US. I have a similar story to tell about trying to get across Canada in an old Ford van. I'll shorten it.... When I finally got back into California and my brother-in-law stuck his head under the hood he said IF you get this home. lol, I had less than 350 miles to go, but whenever I had trouble someone always stopped to try and help. Pro truck drivers included. People are kind.
As a southerner, I am so proud to see people come together to help out their fellow man!!

Warning, a bit of a long yarn ahead... This puts me in mind of a time when I and my late husband, recently married, were traveling around the Pacific Northwest in our very old Ford pickup fitted with a home-built wooden camper. We were in Seattle on a very busy street at the lunch hour, stopped pointed uphill at a traffic signal. When he popped the clutch to get the old pickup over the line to the flat cross-street, it performed admirably. Only problem was, the camper wasn't properly attached to the truck bed, so when the pickup went forward, the camper stayed where it was and fell to the floor. This was our only home at the time and I was totally heartbroken, as tourists were taking film shots of the situation (this was in the 80's!) and even the police who came by weren't too sure what to do next. Fortunately, they were able to call a tow company who knew. They very carefully (remember, the camper was now sat on the ground on an incline) jacked it up just far enough to put some heavy duty dollies under it, put a bumper panel across the back and convinced the police to use their police car (!) to get behind the panel and push the thing up onto the flat cross-street. Once there, my late husband was able to jack up the camper properly and get the pickup back underneath, secure it properly and we resumed our travels, thanks to about a half-dozen police and towing personnel. Oh yes, a day not to be forgotten! [PS: We were married for 21 years before he passed away and I can safely say that was the most exciting day we ever had traveling. I am now re-married to a very quiet and retiring British man and live in the English countryside, living the quiet life ;-) ]

Wow what a great story brings back memories of my trips with my late husband, those are precious memories and many of us I am sure relate to those days gone by fondly.
I can almost see the cottage you live in, natural stones, with roses and lavender, and lots of herbs and of course a small patio, a water feature and a bit of well kept lawn... a few beautiful old trees and I can hear the blackbirds already...

As a camper owning Seattle resident in the 1980s and an all-things-British enthusiast, your story made my day! Aren't those hills in Seattle something!? Queen Anne Hill, Capitol Hill, Beacon Hill... Those hills in San Francisco get all the camera time and all the attention in the movies but Seattle's hills are just as glorious and just as steep! I was a kid in the late 70s/early 80s, but my mom was never without her pickup and camper! Did you have a CB and an 8-track player? We did.

AHHHHHH YES, the experience of buying "a very troublesome vehicle". My current car was horribly misrepresented - they meticulously crazy-glued the door handle together (that lasted a minute) and you could only open the hood with pliers (the guy seemed so thoughtful to have opened the hood beforehand) and there was a GENEROUS use of tape underneath the car (so it wouldn't make noise when you drove it). It was spotlessly clean on the interior and the guy had a good story. Hundreds of $$$ in repairs later ... and wondering WHY some people are so dishonest??? There's HUGE power in being KIND. Carry on.
I've done a lot of traveling, too, sometimes as a solo female, or just me and my handicapped youngest daughter. We've broken down a few times, and always, some good person has stopped to help us. There really are a lot of great people out there, especially in the rural areas.
Every time you guys post a video, i can't do anything else before watching it! Keep it up Bryce and Rasa. We love you!

Quite a story there with your campulance! I really appreciate your attitude through the whole experience, it's always easy to get frustrated with how many times you broke down, but you seemed to have kept your cool.
One of the most wonderful things about the south is how kind people are when something like this happens. Amazing how people just come out of the woodwork to help get that engine moving... This has happened to me a couple times too (different vehicle but same experience). I love southern people.

Yes, people are good. When we peel away all the layers of differences, we all have an innate gift to reach out and help one another. I've gotten to a point when life (in general and in abstract) becomes a bit too much, I know all I need to do is sit and watch a few of your shows, and BAM... I'm reset and recharged. This episode just goes to show why that is. Your positivity in the times of crisis and frustration, as well as, you are able to keep up making videos even when y'all are in such intense lockdowns now, keeps me going.
I sat here thinking of all the beater vehicles I've had from about 13 on (learned how to fix almost everything on a car with my single mom) and yet here I am at 51 with a van that is more computer than car and I have no clue when the electrical goes all wonky what to do with the ruddy thing! LOL
I think I'm going to keep this episode in mind when I want to blister the paint off the walls and pull my hair out.

Have subscribers send a 3-4 minute speed tour of their Tiny Homes, with 4-5 featured homes per episode. You could lend commentary, and there ya go! A whole new variety of Living Big In a Tiny House, aside from the single in-person Tiny House editions. And a great way for us to share our creations with you two, and the rest of the world!
That’s too bad that things didn’t go as planned. My late husband always said that because of vehicles now all run by computer chips a vehicle can breakdown and you can’t work on them because it could be one of the computer chips that’s not working. Bummer.
Covid has taken its toll on people and not being able to travel as part of your business has taken a chunk out of where you can go to.

We used to have exactly. the same problem with our old Volvo XC90 - I loved that car, we used to call it our big blue giant - but every now and then all the electrical systems would just shut off. It once happened in a tunnel without an extra accident stroke and not being able to even warn the truck that was driving behind us that all our (engine and electrical) power was off was very scary. I quickly threw the car into neutral restarted and thank goodness it worked again and I went straight back into Drive. After that, I decided it was time to let the car go..... I stuck with Volvo though, cause it's very dear to my heart
life is a highway and we all gotta ride it. so glad you found the decent side of america. which is def the car people and mechanics across our lands.
Oh yeah, we absolutely love being on the road in the US. Hands down the best country in the world to road trip!

I've watched you for years! You and many others on you tube inspired us to build our own tiny house. We lived in our tiny house for 3 years in Oregon. 3 years ago we moved it to a piece of land near Mt Rainier Natl Park in Washington. Now it has become our own tiny house retreat.

Small American towns are far more fascinating that American cities in my opinion, but that could be my prejudice showing.
I just did a 4500 mile trip from New York to New Mexico and back in my minivan. Thank God no car trouble, but I certainly met a lot of kind and helpful people on my journey. It is heartening to know they are out there!
If you ever get to tour the uk once this madness is over I would highly recommend touring around Wales, Cornwall and Scotland. You can rent camper vans from various places, the smaller the better though as the roads in those areas are pretty narrow and bendy

ambulances _seem_ like they'd be a great tiny house platform, but they aren't because of serious reliability and maintenance problems. also, they tend to use a lot of non-standard components/configurations, so finding parts and even mechanics on the road is often extremely difficult. *word to the wise!*
I have seen numerous tiny homes built or converted from ambulances. Many people are very happy with them as tiny homes. Many people make it work without the issues you mention.
They seem like they could make good campers, but probably they are not good tow vehicles. A mechanic in these comments explained that ambulances have enough load carrying their own heavy weight so when they are used to tow something they are overloaded.
@@JJoy-bk8yr that's exactly part of the problem...ambulances are very heavy vehicles, driven hard in hard conditions, and thus almost universally suffer from many mechanical issue.
@@sassylady2001 i have seen one or two videos of ambulances owners who haven't had problems, and dozens where they _did_ have tons of problems. lol, the only video of a happy owner i remember was where the owners were rich, and put like $30K into it before they even started their build. not what most people can afford, to say the least. 😂

Thank you for sharing your story. My husband and myself when we were younger traveled quite a bit. We had trouble many times while traveling but never enough to stop. We finally bought a new 5th wheel and had a good truck but it still had its problems. However we have wonderful memories of all the wonderful places we have been over the years. He is now 84 yrs.and we think about each trip we were able to take with thankfulness. We met so many nice people on the road also . We went to a Restaurant and was invited to their house and told to be sure to come and hook up at their house next time.
