Billy is my favorite blues rock guitarist. Melodic, smooth, masterful licks with a signature creative style....... and that tone just howls!

King’s answer - ‘why are you working so hard?’

I’m really a metal guy and that’s what I enjoy playing but Billy gibbons was a huge inspiration to me and I still study him and take things from him. He gave me the foundation for my playing.

Nice lesson! I love playing ZZ tunes, especially La Grange with the pinch harmonics. Billy is such a sly master of apparent simplicity. I’ve seen him play the same song in so many different ways, yet the guts are always there. Thanks for sharing your take on it.

Awesome, killer sweet licks. That Les Paul sounds great. Billy G. had was my biggest influence to start playing and remains so today

I'm 3.3 months out of touch, but it just popped up on my fee. The Reverend BG indeed has tasty licks...well done Jeff, great tips. I notice your picking hand 'ring finger' sort of anchors itself to the high 'E' string on the CU angle as well.

I thought I was the only dude that ran your strings over the top of the tail piece of my les Paul lol I did that years ago to prevent breaking my strings I guess when I was younger had to much strength would be breaking my d string cool pentatonic scale tricks from Billy . Nice touch.

I really like the colours of those older gold tops. They actually look like metallic gold, not like the modern day gold tops, that don't have the same metallic gold look. I can't quite put my finger on it but the one in this video looks pure gold 😆

About a year ago, I went looking for a LesPaul goldtop. They're around, I just can't afford what they're worth. So my friend who owns a music store told me to try a PRS Tremonti. After about a half hour in the store, I bought that guitar that same day! I am just a player, have no interest in PRS or anyone else, but I could not help at least making the suggestion for all you guys that are watching this video and drooling over that beautiful LesPaul. If you can afford it, buy a LesPaul goldtop, but if not, there's a pretty interesting option out there now. I had the setup done with Ernie Ball 9 1/2s. May try these lighter gauge strings next time.

Jeff......when you do those really nice "rakes" you employ....seems like your using your right hand mute to implement the rake,,,yes.? Or how
Don't see your thumb on certain rakes...advise if its not an inconvenience.....thanks much.

I could listen to billy play all night. Not too many gitar pickers I can say that about.

  • @cerclesvicieux

I more or less learned pinch harmonics by listening to Billiy Gibbons. However, unlike what many of these tutorials say about pinch harmoincs, I've always used the fingernail of my index finger. That is to say, I strike the string with my nail and follow thorugh with the pick. This is how I've always done it and I could almost swear I read an ingerview with Gibbons back in the day and that was how he explained it, short of using a stiffer pick, or even as I had read, Gibbons will use a peso for a pick. They actually have "stone" picks at my guiar shop. I have often thought about trying one, though I have many differenct types of picks. Even a few aluminum ones. However, I favor a Jim Dunlop .88 - 1.0 nylon and I will use the back of the pick when i want that harder bite.

In an interview Gibbons was asked what his technique was to get that squeal...
his answer? (In classic slow Texas drawl) "Ya gotta grab that twine and make it whine!" 🤣

I don't know if there are others but the only guitarists I know with feather-light touch are Billy Gibbons and Brian May. Both use super light strings. May also uses a coin as plectrum which calls for a light touch. May be Jimmy Page has a light touch since he uses .008 but I'm not sure. I'd love to know if there are others with light touch.

Legend said : If you grow you beard long enough and let the tip of it lightly touch the E string and maybe even the A string you can have a nice hairy ZZ sound.
Unfortunately mine is still too short :_(
Any advice to grow a nice beard ?

You are joking, but Billy's guest solo on QOTSA's Burn the Witch, actually DOES have a beard harmonic. It was total accident, but it was captured on film and on the record th-cam.com/video/9yj87_qYWK4/w-d-xo.html

Craig, let the left edge of your thumb strike the string at the same time the pick does. Be sure to start off with the bridge pickup. The neck pick up can be done, too, but it's more challenging...

Good stuff, Jeff. Billy is one of the most underrated guitarists out there. So tasty. Thank goodness he's becoming LESS underrated as people finally figure out how "real" guitar playing is supposed to be done, without all the stupid, unlistenable "woww eee" pyrotechnic speed thrash playing that sounds like hot garbage and doesn't even sound musical.
