Bonnie had one of the most amazing sturdiest strongest raspiest woman’s voice out there.
Agree. Would you add Kim Carnes to that list?
Would you also add Janis Joplin to that list?
It's hard to believe this song is over 40 years ago (1983). It's still such a good song and her voice was terrific. Her voice reminded me of Kim Carnes's "Bette Davis Eyes" (1981).
Those songs really are cousins, aren't they? I LOVED "Bette Davis Eyes." I used to play it on the jukebbox at Pizza Hut when i had a quarter. Lol
Jim Steinman was a genius songwriter. He and Meat were magic together. RIP Jim and Meat, thanks for all the great music.❤
One important thing to note about 80s videos is not to read too much into them. This was still an area where many artists were told where to go and what to do by their label. Often they were made on a shoestring budget and vague ideas. Some directors had a clue, but most were figuring things out as they went.
Spot on.
This video is still a VISUAL extravaganza and that was the aim for a song that has that classic 80s reverb and synthe as a power-ballad. This was not a shoestring video in to catch the shots took more than a phone cam with AI assist. Just wanted to note that as it's fine to make some fun of these classics.... still it still is both a iconic song and sound and yes video that will last more generations just for then... great effects videos.
Most of these earlier MTV videos were not to show the story of the song ...though seems the video is to have a vampire theme that was the aim to enhance the bang to a already banger song. MTV that began in 81 with this song about 83 and heavy rotation on MTV. Sure some videos were kind of simple, but not this one.
I mean think of Cher's comeback late 80s and the song with video for - If I could turn back Time. Recorded on a literal Navy battleship with Cher in a skimpy stunning outfit that cause some flack for Navy Brass who gave permission thinking it was going to be about a Dear-John-Letter and even for MTV it was risque and a couple scenes redone bit less suggestive and still only got late-night MTV play.
That video is will always be timeless even though the video does not show what the song it about in the least. It is just to be visually stunning and showing-off Cher's assets in front of Navy young men on-ship who had a treat that day of the shoot and sealed in time for the video.
Is that how one of my favourite artist Peter Gabriel ended up spending over $1M on his huge megatron song Sledgehammer's music video? Showing raw poultry dancing and other various abstractions?
This is a thing that Meatloaf utterly shattered back then, thank god. Michael Jackson did too.
Also, let's not forget the cocaine that was fueling some interesting artistic decisions
Now you need to do Bonnie Tyler’s holding out for a hero
My Favourite song of Bonnie Tyler's!!! Love the raspyness of her voice.
Love Bonnie Tyler she is from my hometown swansea in a country called Wales which is one of the three separate countries that make up Britain & very proud of her success and talent, always loved her raspy vocals. 🏴
I didn't know Bonnie Tyler was from Wales! I'll have to ask Ren to play this song on his next Twitch live stream! He loves shouting out his brethren from Wales that made it in music!💙

@MegsD79 Yeah she was born on Wales. If you heard her speak you would notice.
@@MegsD79 like Ren
Lost in France ❤️❤️
When Steinman wrote the song, he was trying to come up with a love song and that this song was originally meant to be a vampire love song. The original title was "Vampires in Love" because I was working on a musical for "Nosferatu." If you listen close to the lyrics, it's all about the darkness, the power of darkness and love's place in the dark.
memories from the 80's
Without a doubt, one of my favorite female voices of all time.
This used to be one of my favorite songs and still good song. I’m aging myself I bought Bonnie Tyler on cassette tape for this song played in car cassette player in 80s, graduate of ‘85. Good old days thanks for this brought back memories. I love your reactions, much love to you ❤
My mom gave me some records to keep me out of hers I think I was probably 10 or 11 Bobby Vee, Buddy Holly, Bonny Tyler(It's a heartache) Marie Osmaond (Paper Roses) and Kim Carns (Bette Davis Eyes) I went somewhere every time! Some movie played in my mind music saved my life!!! Marty Robbins Thier Hanging Me Tonight would make me cry so hard!! I discovered Punk then Master of Puppets hit the scene It was all over for me!!! I Love music soooo much genre has NOTHING to do with anything but a box. I have MAD RESPECT for you!!! You signed my boy and my nephew's hats they went first concert they went to see tech and came home rapping and singing yours! Your 2 minutes of kindness (i commented before about this you responed and thanked me for telling you) lifted two boys so high they talk about it whenever your music comes up on the playlist! LEGEND!!!!
Such a great song!!❤❤❤❤
Bonnie Tyler GREAT voice song Amazing.......
I truly enjoy seeing your face light up hearing a song again, from the earliest of your memories. Fantastic job
Krizz, this was a make-out or break-up song. Check out "Holding out for a Hero" if you haven't.
One of the greats. The rasp in her voice is amazing ❤
Bonnie Tyler is the true princess of Wales 🏴
Second only to Diana.
This song was written by Jim Steinman, who wrote the majority of Meat Loaf's music. Check with Black P about his tunes.
Interesting. You can definitely hear it!
Great legendary song and artist. don't worry about it! Goth was everywhere in the 80's and the "Children of the Damn" bright eyes made a lot of us laugh then. And when you laughed at that part, I laughed with you because it was ridiculous!!! lol Good reaction.
I remember when this song came out. The boy, I had a crush on in eighth grade made a mix tape with this on it for me. It was also played at every school dance for years.
The early 80's was great with the female singing voices that were available. From Bonnie Tyler, Olivia Newton-John, Annie Lennox, Sheena Easton, Linda Ronstadt and Juice Newton for just a few of them. And let's not forget the crazy music videos probably fueled by tons of cocaine!
Uhhhhh stevie nicks!!!!

I love this song and video. What's your reaction to it was absolutely hilarious. Watching you react to it was almost better than the song and video itself.
Thank you. I actually kept going by this one but ive always loved this song. The " eclipse" includes darkness that shields out the light inch by inch. This video reminds me that the meaning of something artistic is not always in your face, sometimes, you have to dig through the layers. Theres never ever just 1 meaning. Thats not art , thats " boring."
Video is supposed to be about vampires. Don't have much to do with the song, but there it is. It was the 80's.
Jim had a musical on that theme too.
I’m loving your harmony ❤
That is a great song. Beautifully done. Yes forever for me and you starts, this very second.
You are so right, this song was huge when it came out.
Welsh lasd - first hit 1978 - lost in France.
This song was written by Jim Steinman who wrote most of Meatloaf’s stuff -
Great reaction
❤️👍🏽👍☘️
If God had a singer in his court the singers name is Marcelito Pomoy and he's singing THE prayer greatest solo singer I've EVER heard and im 50 bro he's the TRUTH😊😊👍👍
Video is a dreamscape. For me the song is about the dark night of the soul.
If I'm not mistaken Jim Stienman from meat loaf fame wrote this song
Correct. It has his signature bombast and operatic imagery.
you are 100% correct
You had me crackin up on the "Turn around bright eyes" at the end.
ITS A VAMPIRE SONG!
Steinman said in an interview with Playbill about the inclusion of the song in his 1997 musical Dance of the Vampires:
with 'Total Eclipse of the Heart', I was trying to come up with a love song and I remembered I actually wrote that to be a vampire love song. Its original title was 'Vampires in Love' because I was working on a musical of Nosferatu, the other great vampire story. If anyone listens to the lyrics, they're really like vampire lines. It's all about the darkness, the power of darkness and love's place in the dark...[19]
It looks like an awesome locale fore a vampire movie and some of the characters with the lights in their eyes could very well fit too!
I always loved this song with her voice, she sings like an angel 👼! I forget that this is a Steinman song, but it makes sense with the beautiful piano in it!❤❤❤
In the 80s, nothing was complete without ninjas. Even if they were dancing ninjas in music videos.
God, what a time to be alive and a music lover.
... and a ninja
I remember dancing to this as my solo dance routine!!!
OMG. When you said "Literal" I had to mention there is a "Literal Music Video" of this video that is an absolute riot. Maybe not worth a reaction, but definitely worth a look :D
Thank you , I am eenjoying
Bonnie Tyler'd gotten polyps on her vocal cords, but v's surgery & not singing for a year, she did sing, damaging her cords, &
made her unique raspy voice successful!
Best way to follow this up?? Meat Loaf's 'I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)' (With a Michael Bay directed music video!)
I NEVER NOTICED THE LASER EYES 😆😆😆- That shit is hilarious
F N love your energy brother lol ❤
jim stienman also wrote for air supply
You should do I Need A Hero by Bonnie Tyler that is another great by her.
Jim Stienman originally wrote this song for Mealoaf. But Meatloaf and Stienman were on the outs and Stienman gave the song to Bonnie Tyler to sing.
You tickle the fire out of me Krizz 😂
I have always loved this song and her voice I'm glad I didn't ever hear the joke
Krizz any chance on a country style tour in the future you could call it The Badass American tour and have a few great country rappers on it like colt ford,Demun Jones, bubba sparxxx, dusty Leigh, and whoever els that would be pretty huge 🤘🏼🇺🇲🇺🇲
This song was originally written for Meatloaf to sing it. Jim Steinman wrote all of Meatloafs songs.
The "Turn around", is Meatloaf!!!
You MUST check out Rory Dodd the "turn around bright eyes" singer with the demo of "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" with Jim on piano. It's a crime Rory never had his own spotlight and success. Play it loud! Rory also featured on Jim Steinman's album Bad For Good, taking lead on quite a few of the songs. Surf's Up truly highlights how magical Rory's voice is.
Would love to see you react to Grime music from the UK!?
Best wedding scene ever 😂
Iconic song and video. You can always tell a Jim Steinman song when it plays. He was known for his songs with Meatloaf but he produced this song, songs by Air Supply and others. But Bonnie's voice is incredible! Video's at this point in time had very little budget because the video was not yet the money maker it became. We were just beginning to see how the video impacted music popularity. Artists had to make videos and often times had to just throw shit together. A lot of cheap material, like drapes blowing in the wind, a horse walking past, cheesy new tech etc. Video's didn't often make a lot of sense. Dancing & choreography became the go-to to make videos and everyone had dancing in their videos. Duran Duran became one of the earlier groups to go on location to create videos and the cinematography was incredible. Then came Michael Jackson who made the first videos that were stories and had a larger budget with Billie Jean & Beat It, and of course Thriller but that came after the monster impact of the first two and his status growing so huge. After that, you began to see video shape into more complex stories and videos actually started to create new technology that evolved the video & tv quickly. A-ha - "Take on me, Dire Straits - "Money For Nothing" etc
Not my style of music but a real classic. And I love her voice.
Total Eclipse Of The Heart is what is known as a Rock Opera. Go look up Jim Steiman. You will be pleasantly surprised.🤘🏼😎😬
Good girl and bad girl all in one
check out Bonnie Tyler and Shakin Stevens duet ..good feel good fun track ..another 80s classic ..
I do the same cussing now wnenever I hear this song...lol
This song is a banger!!! I'm almost 46 now and I remember back in my high school days this was mine and my friend's song. When we were in a car together we did this song, I sang the turn around part and she did the other parts. I just don't think today's younger generation has connections with friends like the people my age and older generations had. I'm the same as u Krizz when it comes to these videos, they just seem way out there from what the song is saying.
First video I ever saw on MTV back when MTV was about videos.
If you loved the Welsh songstress then check out Noddy Holder and Slade, huge catalogue including 6 No.1s. Their popular Cum on feel the Noize or their huge Christmas song…51yrs old and just charted again in the uk….Merry Xmas Everybody
Or as Ozzy Osbourne said ‘one of the greatest voices in rock’
I have always side-eyed this video (there’s something very Mary LeTourneau about it) but the song is fire. My generation had it injected into our veins. 😂
" Strong words (cursing) from a mouth means there is a weak heart, mind and soul behind it" Think about that. A quote I heard years ago.
now you need to hear voiceplay, an acapella group) cover of this song. vert impressive. ar showed bp some voiceplay and he really liked it. voiceplayn is ar's favorite acapella group
This video is a dreamscape. For me the song is about the dark night of the soul. Check out Meat Loaf's "It's All Coming Back to Me Now," by same songwriter as "Total Eclipse," Jim Steinman.
I miss the 80s!!! Class of 89!! I never understood what the half naked young boys had to do with it though! LOL
Hey it's Majestic
I did love this song yet remember Big Brother house UK our contestants separated in room, father a form of torture still cringe as I gather all hated continuous song by end, imo? Am I wrong? Her song was amazing, imo! Thank you for sharing this. 🇬🇧☕👵❤
Guess what, spell check ✔ at work, hope you understood.
Jim Steinman wrote the best theatrical pop/rock.
This is a vampire story.
My maw maw loved this song
I love the Dan band 😂
I’d listen to this Song on tha School Bus in High School Deadly mate 😉👍 kenoath
😂😂😂😂 its ok Chrizz. ❤
Do Laura brannigan -Gloria
Check our Exit Edens cover but put it on 1.25x play speed. Makes it power metal
Such a great song and kind of creepy video back in the day as a kid tho. I'm startin to feel like Krizz is low-key snoopin on my listening sessions of late lol. But more likely it's just great minds think alike ...
Love the song. I have no clue what they were thinking when this video was made. I'm guessing good drugs
As @bitslammer commented prior - the 80's videos had a lot to do with what their label wanted to see, or what the video director wanted to interpret the song as being; so it wasn't a true "extension" of the songwriter's, or the artist's vision of what the song meant. But what most people fail to recognize, though, is that many of the men that were a deciding factor for those videos were men WHO WERE ALREADY INITIATED INTO secret cults, esoteric mysteries, and other things. So when people say "don't read too much into it, its all just being artsy-fartsy"... NO. This is the pure right brained, subconscious dominant language of SYMBOLISM that we see in these videos, and there is always some message being relayed. Banquets, and fancy meals with many course had many uses - one of which was as a sort of ritual; and they are still used as part of such things now. The giant building with many rooms is the soul, or the mind; and you can clearly see throughout the video AND the song that things are a contrast of darkness and light, dancing and battling for dominance. But that's all the breakdown I'll give on it... it IS open to a degree of personal interpretation, after all... which is part of the 'magic' of a video paired with a song.
There is a pretty good cover by Nikki French from the 90s. Techno/Dance
See you at the FILMORE Denver dec 28th 😢
You being who you are should start another chanel... contact some of the 80"s artists and offer to redo the video...as you interpret it and see what they think...I couldn't agree more... they bad an entire area of art that was brand new and they made the weirdest videos!!
The guy who wrote this had started writing a musical about vampires. This was one of the songs meant for that musical. He decided to turn this over to Bonnie Taylor. Meatloaf was upset he didn't get it because he was having trouble with his voice at the time. Yes, the video rather sucks but the video, yes, I think it missed the mark, but Bonnie Tyler hit it dead on. Look up the history on the song. It might make more sense. Regardless it it is a great song.
videos in the early 80's were experimental and usually didn't make a lick of sense
I would love to hear you sing this song in entirety ... whacha think ? Cheers
80’s videos are the products of film school students who want to make their mark. They usually have NOTHING to do with the song. Focus on the vocal artistry instead!
I love your into. What... Do we have.... HERE?
This is a Remix. I know the eye stuff is very strange. It was just as strange back then.
What was going on in 80's videos....well, it was 80's drugs
Check out Kim Karnes Betty Davis eyes
Stevie Nicks Edge of Seventeen,
Just wanna say luv ya Krizz. And Bonnie had an AMAZING voice, awesome music, but her videos were... a bit odd lol.
This video though is supposed to just be a weird dream she was in.
That song dates me in the worst way, but it IS a banger.
If you ever need a laugh look up the Literal Music Video version of this one.
You can not try to interpret many of the videos in the 80s. They were nonsensical.
They weren't meant to hold a lot of symbolism or secret meanings.
If they were, none of us teens were trying to look for any deeper meaning. It was a kooky time.
I think most people think that last part is funny because it's cringey, lol!
I could do without these early 80s videos. They make no sense to me!
I'm 64
You tickle me with how tickled you get at these 80’s videos 😂 you know they stay cornier than Kansas (the state not the band) 🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣 you couldn’t even help yourself…. Samesies 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤭
You have to sing this loud as possible
@ ahahahaha period! Now I have to go watch Old School 🤣🫶
Really, 80s videos rarely make sense or have much to do with the songs. I'd completely forgotten about the ridiculous laser eyes in this one, the last one was hilarious! BTW Krizz, you have a great singing voice, and your harmonies - whaaaaat?!?!
appreciate you
