Integrated pest management focuses on managing pest populations by using multiple techniques. Monitoring and regulatory practices are important in pre-empting the establishment of pest populations or preventing them from reaching injurious levels. Insecticides are sometimes applied in combination with other control tactics to achieve pest management. Furthermore, most IPM programs rotate insecticides with different modes of action, such as synaptic poisons, axonic poisons and muscle poisons. Given the potential problems in human and environmental health, and the probability of resistance developing with insecticide use, recent efforts have led to the development of alternative approaches in pest management. These include cultural and biological control tactics, which we will discuss in the next module.
