Glorious masochism! Thoroughly loved watching this - thank you so much for making it :) Such great tips and perspectives & Simon made me miss living in Sheffield :) Now I'm off out to make myself cry - thanks!
Years ago we used to do a sportive every year in the Peak District called "Phil & Friends" organised by none other than Phil Liggett. That sadly ended a few years ago but I remember the route and we have been back several times since and ridden it with a group of friends. The 90-mile loop includes climbs like Winnats Pass, Rushups Edge and Holme Moss including several other leg snappers. Definitely my favorite riding area of the country.
That was the first 'sportive' I ever did, although they weren't called sportives back then. I did it around 2001 and Phil Liggett was actually there at the start at the church hall in Stannington (if I remember). I remember bonking on the climb up Chapel en le Frith, up to the feed stop. I then gorged myself on every foodstuff possible and consequently felt sick until the final 10 miles when I felt fine! A classic example of how NOT to fuel! Great route though and I'd like to do it again some day.
Love climbing the hills and mountains of Southwest Virginia. Going to be picking up this guidebook and make it a life goal to climb them all. Great video!
I ride about 5000 miles and 500,000 ft of elevation in the Peak District every summer. I ride 20 miles to get there and spend all day going up and down. Amazing roads and often very quiet.
3:42 is that Apple Street on Werneth Low? 5:02 I thought I recognized it 😛 That bit with the rectangular holes is brutal. Get up there and keep to the left and you go down Cowlishaw Road that's 20%. Go to the end of Cowlishaw Road and keep left again and go down Compstall Hill, then go left at the bottom of that hill and you get to John Street - the most brutal of all the roads around there because it's quite long, leading to the top of Werneth Low - but John Street is not tarmac, it's a farm road littered with potholes, so perhaps wouldn't be included in these lists of climbs. I never realized this but riding up John Street burned twice as many calories as I did going up Winnats Pass (both on my smart trainer). It's the ride I hold my PR on for average Watts 😊
Today I tried the steepest climb I’ve ever come across. Just outside Rickmansworth at 9.1% and failed miserably. I had to stop two thirds of the way up. I will try it again. I’m more used to 6% - 6.8% climbs so today I was definitely out of my comfort zone. I’m slowly losing weight thanks to cycling and the local climbs are helping. From 4%, 5% and 6% climbs; some days they’re easy, other days not so but I have to include climbs in my rides or it’s a waste of time
Ricky Hill!! I remember it well as I grew up in Harrow. I used to go up it a lot around the ages of 15/16. I then stopped riding for a year or so and went up it again and got cramp in both legs, at the same time!!
@@rondragon I was out riding that way yesterday and I avoided it; still a bit too intimidating for me.😞 I made up for it doing : my longest ride, my record total climbing and fastest 40 km. I still intend to try Ricky Hill even though I have COPD I’m determined not to let it hold me back.
@@cathalkenneally1614 - you'll get there, just build up to it. Half the battle is in the mind. When I'm next at my mum's in Harrow, I'll give it a go. It's been a long long while!
There has been some slippage on the road surface and the local council have closed the road for safety reasons. Cyclists are still riding up there, but aren't supposed to. Cheers.
I assume it was Snakes Pass which was closed a couple of months back due to heavy rain causing subsidence. It was banned to vehicular traffic and eventually all traffic (including cycles, although that didn't stop people!)
i wanna see mr warren do a video on a climb with a carbon frame bike lika a pinarello dogma or something like that for sure will help a lot to mr warren performance i guess from what i could see that its one of the most non profesional ciclyst on the world in climbing work just amaizing great video again
“I always have to walk on Hardknott”. You what? From a hill climbing specialist? Maybe stop grinding the too-big gears? Seems to be a wanna be racer thing. Newer bikes at least seem to come with more sensible lower gears. Ah well. I’ve never walked Hardknott and I’m a lot older than Simon…
Much as I like your bike reviews, I like this sort of content even more.
Glad you like them!

34×29 on a 36.5% grade, that is impressive, good on you Simon. David, great interview especially the parts while riding.
Waatching this has got me excited about doing some climbs!

Hopefully not walking!
Awesome!!
Really enjoyed this video tempted to buy the scottish climbs book thanks
Hi Simon you talked about Spain have you done the Rocacorba?
Wayne
Great video! Simon should do one in California, Colorado, and/or the whole of the US with Phil Giamon!

I'm on the edge of the fens.....it's flat but there's nothing to stop the wind, which can be very difficult at times.....
Please Simon come to Greece!!! We need some climbs map too!!!
Where to go in Greece for good climbs? I plan to go next year.
Great video! I really hope to meet Simon someday. He’s inspired me to tackle some tough climbs… but not the Cowlyd! You can keep that shit! 😀
California!!
Where is this 'nearest' function on the app that Simon mentions?
...and they're all free!
Interesting to see what gear cassette options simon uses for his bike and the spec
Hi again David
What model Gyro helmet and glasses is the guest Simon is using there in the opener?
Link to the Sportives as David appears to have missed them from the description:
www.polocini.com/collections/events
congrats mr david awesome video cheers from venezuela to both
IS there a report up from his Fred Whitton go?
Yes! Here you go th-cam.com/video/YZNGth8J1s0/w-d-xo.html
Loved the video but I can’t find a link to Simons bike.
Publishing the video today so watch out for it in your subscription list :)
Certainly a great way to find out if you have heart disease.... Just how steep a climb can you maintain with a bpm of 210
Hi David, what glasses are you wearing in the vid?
They’re Scott Pro Shield www.scott-sports.com/gb/en/product/scott-pro-shield-sunglasses?article=2892327256012
…and women. A little Monty Python 🐍 throwback there. 😅
Downhillers have the right idea; get the lift to the top, then send it on the way down......
Ok I need to know why the road was closed???

Know anyone in Sweden who could be and do a Simon here? Please use your connections and influence - and make a top 100 climbs happen here to!
Hi Dave, is it my imagination but you seem to halfwheel all the people you meet out on the bike?
Haha! It’s just trying to make sure I’m able to fit us both in when filming

You forgot to ask Simon the most important question of our era...rim or disk brakes? I think I know Simon's answer.
The best is whatever you have and enjoy.
I must be in the heavy yet small minority then 😂
