Starting my day in Brussels, I’m hauling a JCB Backhoe, a powerful piece of machinery bound for a construction site in Reims, France. The morning air is cool and crisp as I pull out of the industrial yard, the city just beginning to wake up. The load is heavy, and I can feel the weight as I merge onto the highway, leaving behind the urban sprawl of Brussels.
The road south is smooth and straight, cutting through the scenic Belgian countryside. Rolling fields and clusters of trees line the highway, and the early morning fog slowly lifts as the sun rises higher. The engine hums steadily, and I keep a cautious eye on the traffic around me, aware that this heavy load requires longer braking distances and careful handling, especially on the inclines and turns.
Crossing the border into France, the landscape begins to change. The lush, green fields give way to the open plains of northern France. The sky is a pale blue, and the road is quiet, making for a peaceful drive. Passing through small villages with their distinctive French architecture, I get a sense of the rural charm that defines this region. The road to Reims is straightforward, and before long, I’m approaching the city, famous for its champagne and rich history.
Navigating through Reims, I carefully maneuver the truck through the city streets, heading towards the construction site on the outskirts. The delivery is smooth, and I unload the JCB Backhoe without a hitch. With the first job done, I grab a quick bite to eat, enjoying the local atmosphere before picking up my next load-cheese, destined for Cologne, Germany.
With the trailer now filled with pallets of cheese, I set off from Reims towards Cologne. The sun is high in the sky as I leave the city behind, the familiar French countryside rolling by once again. The load is lighter this time, and the truck feels more responsive as I pick up speed on the highway. The scent of fresh farmland mingles with the cool breeze coming through the window, making for a pleasant drive.
As I head northeast, the landscape gradually becomes more industrial, with factories and warehouses appearing alongside the fields. The road is busier too, with more trucks and cars sharing the highway as I approach the Belgian border once again, briefly re-entering the country before crossing into Germany. The transition is seamless, but the change in architecture and road signs is noticeable, reminding me I’m in a new country.
Approaching Cologne, the traffic thickens, and the sky turns grey, hinting at the possibility of rain. The city’s skyline comes into view, dominated by the iconic spires of Cologne Cathedral. Navigating the busy streets requires focus, especially with the valuable cargo of cheese in tow. The roads are slick from a light drizzle, but I handle the truck carefully, ensuring a safe journey to the destination.
Finally, I arrive at the warehouse in Cologne. The city buzzes with energy, a mix of old-world charm and modern industry. I back the truck into the unloading bay, feeling satisfied as the pallets of cheese are offloaded. From the heavy machinery in Reims to the delicate dairy products in Cologne, this journey has been a showcase of Europe’s diversity. As the job wraps up, I prepare for whatever the next delivery might bring, ready to take on the challenges and joys of the open road.
