Oh man I am making all of my DM puzzles math from now on. "The wraith hisses that you can enter the tomb but only if you answer his riddle... Prove that the set of real numbers between 0 and 1 is uncountable."
One can create an infinite list of real numbers with infinite digits each different from all the others and use this list to generate an arbitrary amount of new real numbers not already on the list.
Would love it if the riddles were added to the description, or as a pinned comment or something, so that we can read it and try to figure it out as we watch...
I really enjoyed the puzzle scene, which i wasn't sure I would. In my games I never really employ puzzles, and when my buddies do they usually feel forced or unnatural. So it was dope to see cool and solvable puzzles using real things from dnd, great job to Matt and the Chain for solving them so fast!
If you look at the mini-cam view of your timecode, you can see the row of cards hanging on Matt's DM screen. They give the initiative order to the players, and they provide information like AC of the players to Matt on his side.
I think it's interesting that opinions diverge on whether you can split up your attack action. There's a good argument that having multiple attacks is possible within an action because you're chaining movements together, as opposed to making discrete single attacks. But then there's a tendency for people to see multiple attacks as distinct from a monster's multi-attack - they'd argue multiple attacks just means you're attacking faster and so can do it more often. Meanwhile, a multi-attack is a different thing where a monster makes multiple simultaneous attacks (e.g. a bite plus a claw attack.)
~Promotion talk~ *Spoilers* I guess It's funny how both Copper and Judge got passed over for a promotion and the 2 former Junior officers immediately got promoted to not only top brass, but 1st and 2nd in command of the whole company lol
Promotions SHOULD be based on the principles of Meritocracy and tempered with situational needs for an organization. After all the math is tabulated the best person for whatever job should be awarded the position, temporarily. If the situational need of that person filling a position is no longer pertinent, then the decision should be revisited/recalculated. If the person is not creating beneficial progress for the organization because their previous placement was better suited to their capabilities, or someone else appears to be better suited for the job, then the decision should be revisited/recalculated. No one should be allowed to remain in an organization in an inappropriate position such that they create movement contrary to the aims of the organization. This is true for every rung of the organization’s ladder, all the way to the top. Seniority should only be part of the equation when there is more than one qualified choice. More directly: Leaders should be able to quickly coalesce information provided by their own senses and the proffered perceptions/opinions of others, make a decision, implement it, and do what is needed for the decision to bear fruit or rot. Everyone else should obey the decision maker and do everything in their power to manufacture a success. As well as the above, sub-leaders should monitor the implementation of the decision and communicate in both directions on the ladder. Umlaut Tom, in combination with how his character is played, is actually the best P/PC combination for the position of Lieutenant.
More exact in reply to your comment, OP: It appears to me that TNT is playing Copper as someone who is very comfortable in his rank, and with no ambition to take on further responsibility. Judge appears to be a perfect candidate for either of the top two positions in leadership, on paper. Lawful, a massive amount of charismatic presence, and pretty serious backup in the form of his master. He just shouldn’t be looking for personal fights with unthreatening town-folk, or be doing anything else that may bring unpaid conflict to The Chain’s doorstep. Considering that, and his recent action that PO’d Asmo, maybe he is being played as someone who is conflicted and possibly looking to change in some manner(s).
and a Balhannoth, just goes to show that a party of 6 is really powerful when facing a single opponent. The monster might one-round one of the party members, but theres still 5 dudes whacking at him. Game balance in terms of CR kinda goes out the window when you go above 4 players, so you really kinda gotta go on gut feeling...the most unintuitive difficulty marker and ways to interpret difficulty, imo.
For what it's worth, if you cannot take an Action, then you cannot take a Bonus Action. Rules-interactions like these are probably part of the reason 5E eliminated the Dazed condition.
I think he's trying to simulate something like the slow spell, which has a similar action-restriction mechanic, without the reduction to movement speed or Armor Class. Either way, it's effective.
I might have asked them elsewhere but is the chain coming back either in fantasy grounds form ? I loved this it’s in my top two dnd games on a streaming/video service
Chain isn't coming back to streaming, far as I have followed the news. Matt's still going to record the game so he can use clips for Running the Game videos. Some players didn't enjoy having a camera on them when playing DnD.
Hounds puzzle is actually pretty easy: just set up a system of equations. 4x+3y=37, 3x+4y=33 Subtract the equations: =>x=y+4 Substitute into first equation: =>4(y+4)+3y=37 =>7y+16=37 =>7y=21 =>y=3 x=y+4, y=3 =>x=7 Solution: An adult weighs 7 boulders and a pup weighs 3 boulders. Took me ~15 seconds to solve. EDIT: Or Lars can do the ol' guess 'n check.
I _knew_ there was a more elegant solution than the way I solved it. Basically, I just multiplied the first equation by 33 and the second by 37 to give two equations with a common answer (1221). Worked from there to get y=3. Took a _bit_ longer than 15 seconds though. In my defence, it's been a couple of decades since I did any serious math.
Nick Williams that’s an equally valid method (assuming you didn’t make any errors, although getting the right answer indicates that you probably didn’t), although it is a bit longer.
@@QuiescentPilot The real problem with an inelegant method like mine is that dealing with large numbers increases the likelihood of an arithmetical screwup throwing a spanner in the works. For no other reason than me being at a loose end, I'll show my working: 4h+3p=37 3h+4p=33 => 132h+99p=1221 111h+148p=1221 => 132h+99p=111h+148p 132h=111h+49p 21h=49p 3h=7p => 3h+4p=11p=33 p=3 So yeah. Gets the answer, but more scope for potential error.
@@nickwilliams8302 That's exactly right. Your mind doesn't deal with larger number well for mental arithmetic, which is why I chose a method that did not require me to use them. As I said before, as long as you don't make a mistake, your method is perfectly valid. (Also props for writing it out in an understandable way in a comment section).
@@QuiescentPilot That's very kind of you to say. Props for your solution. It's just that ... You realise we're two people discussing math in the comments section of an hours-long D&D stream, right? Do you think we might be nerds?
I wanna do the hounds and puppies thing. So we know 1 hound equals one puppy plus 4 stones, just looking at the different sets - replace the 4th pup with a hound and add 4 stones in one case and you produce the other case. That means one scale has 37 stones equalling the weight of 7 pups plus 16 stones - subtracting the 16 stones from both sides of the equation reveals that the 7 pups alone would weight 21 stones. Same is true when looking at the other scale - 33 stones equals 7 pups plus 12 stones, meaning 7 pups equal 21 stones. Obviously this means each pup weighs 3 stones, and we already know hounds weigh 4 extra stones. So 3 pups and 4 hounds would be... 3*3 + 4*7 = 37. Checks out. I wonder if there's a more sophisticated way to deduce the answer... But I was not even good at this in high school, let alone 13 years later.
Ok two years later and I'm doing this again, with equations. 3hounds+4pups=33 boulders. 4hounds+3pups=33 boulders So: 3h = 33b-4p 4h = 37b-3p 1h = 33b-4p/3 = 37b-3p/4 = 11b-1.33p = 9.25b-0.75p = 11-9.25b = -0.75p+1.33p = 1.75b= 0.58p 1.75b*100/58 = approx 3. 1p = 3b Do the same for hounds. I don't know how to do this while maintaining integers. x)
I started watching campaign diary 12, and I was all "wait, what ... when did that happen?!?", until I figured out it was for this stream that I hadn't watched yet.
As an action, you can temporarily dismiss your familiar. It disappears into a pocket dimension where it awaits your summons. Alternatively, you can dismiss it forever. As an action while it is temporarily dismissed, you can cause it to reappear in any unoccupied space within 30 feet of you. so no need to cast the spell agian that is only if u need a "NEW" familiar and it has a casting time of 1h

I got the trees puzzle too! Didn't time it, but I think I must have taken just a little longer than Töm!
Oh that’s cool my favorite enemy is a grey slaad lol. I like them so much I have one as a npc in my own setting
Would love it if the riddles were added to the description, or as a pinned comment or something, so that we can read it and try to figure it out as we watch...
Some light none intrusive bg music would lift what is already a quality production to even greater heights imo.
Rule of Substitution would make the hound and pup puzzle so much easier
I figured out the math puzzle really quickly, but I couldn't figure out the trees puzzle at all!
No Gods No Masters!
Getting closer to catching up to live.... Judge, yeah love me some judge!
MATH COLVILLE
I wonder how much chat was screaming about the familiar thing.
This is a fun one to rewatch. Slim is here, Leech is here, and Boots has always been a bard. The circle is complete
Placing a standard should assist in saves a beacon of courage
I love the illrigger but still I think ferocity is my favorite homebrew thing. Finaly the ranger is a cool class!
Being able to use channel divinity to max damage on Fireball is too OP
What initiative tracker are they using? 1:17:18
If you look at the mini-cam view of your timecode, you can see the row of cards hanging on Matt's DM screen. They give the initiative order to the players, and they provide information like AC of the players to Matt on his side.
"I am an expert in pudding." That joke works on more than one level.
Bone Bow Bonus!
Best Ranger!
I wish we could understand Jerry when he mumbles into the feed.....
You can put a familiar in a pocket dimension then pop it out within 30 feet of you
2:27:19 Time to bust out some linear algebra! RREF of the augmented matrix, baby!
Halberds pikes and glaives are all great weapons with reach. Would be siiiick if slim got a glaive
~Promotion talk~ *Spoilers* I guess
It's funny how both Copper and Judge got passed over for a promotion and the 2 former Junior officers immediately got promoted to not only top brass, but 1st and 2nd in command of the whole company lol
I wonder if Judge really cares since the Lieutenant when the stream started was someone he recruited into The Chain (Sweet).
1:15:15 Bards are full casters.
2:39:35 Who was the commander before Red?
3:17:00 He's been concussed!
@Lawson Leong Yes, but what about before Red? Was Red the first commander?
At 58 minutes mark what are the boxes that was talking about?
It really is like anime they even have tentacles
Not only can he write slim's story, he can inscribe it with blood, in the flesh of their enemies
oh wow, the only one in their party that lacks the ability to heal others is slim lol
After all that torture, they only got 1 level?!?!? I must admit, after watching this whole series, it really felt like it was the DM versus the party.
Can we keep leach? Forever
I bet Nails was already a bard...
Damn, Matt throws an Elder Oblex at a level 6 party...yikes! I hope they rest before they take on the Lord of Madness!
and a Balhannoth, just goes to show that a party of 6 is really powerful when facing a single opponent.
Vulnerability = either 1.5 or double damage ...not that i want Slim to die since him and Boots are my favorite characters now...since we lost Nails
@@geoffdewitt6845 totally agree
Those healing potions should have dice numbered 2-5 :)
The 3 9 10 puzzle made me pause, good fun.
@@CountsDigGraves that really sucks I was hoping I see how it plays out. I really loved the chain
@@CountsDigGraves bs reason. they didn't get along.
Hounds puzzle is actually pretty easy: just set up a system of equations.
4x+3y=37,
3x+4y=33
Subtract the equations:
=>x=y+4
Substitute into first equation:
=>4(y+4)+3y=37
=>7y+16=37
=>7y=21
=>y=3
x=y+4, y=3
=>x=7
Solution: An adult weighs 7 boulders and a pup weighs 3 boulders.
@@QuiescentPilot
The real problem with an inelegant method like mine is that dealing with large numbers increases the likelihood of an arithmetical screwup throwing a spanner in the works.
For no other reason than me being at a loose end, I'll show my working:
4h+3p=37
3h+4p=33
=>
132h+99p=1221
111h+148p=1221
=>
132h+99p=111h+148p
132h=111h+49p
21h=49p
3h=7p
=>
3h+4p=11p=33
p=3
So yeah.
@@QuiescentPilot
That's very kind of you to say.
OR.... you can brute force it.
This is why I thought the riddle's result should be in non-integers.
Ok two years later and I'm doing this again, with equations.
3hounds+4pups=33 boulders.
4hounds+3pups=33 boulders
So:
3h = 33b-4p
4h = 37b-3p
1h = 33b-4p/3 = 37b-3p/4
= 11b-1.33p = 9.25b-0.75p
= 11-9.25b = -0.75p+1.33p
= 1.75b= 0.58p
1.75b*100/58 = approx 3.
1p = 3b
Do the same for hounds.
I don't know how to do this while maintaining integers. x)
I misread the title at first as The Matt God's Pawns
I love how this came out after the overview, made me go watch this on twitch instead :(
That 4 hour upload is a bitch. Personally I caught the podcast
Watching on twitch is a pain.
I started watching campaign diary 12, and I was all "wait, what ... when did that happen?!?", until I figured out it was for this stream that I hadn't watched yet.
Don't you dare cheer for chat. They're a fickle mistress
Hey, if you like those puzzles, shout out.
I'm a mathmetician/physicist/data scientist that has a passion for riddles, puzzles, and logic. I publish stuff on GMs guild, and I would like to know if people would be interested in more of these kinds of puzzles. I could compile hundreds of them skinned for D&D. What do you think?
Might be the wrong place for a dragon ball reference but... "MY INSANITY IS MAXIMUM!!!
Only took me 2 minutes to figure out the puzzle. XD
i hope O'd can stick around, if not at least be recurring. You compared the chain to star trek once or twice and i hope he can be a Barclay or O'brien, i guess leech can be there too or whatever
shoutout to systems of equations
It took me way too long for the math one.
