I’m glad my boy Sterling K Brown was nominated, he was the best part of American Fiction and it’s not even close. That dude’s range is so great. We need him in a starring role ASAP
Robot Dreams's inclusion only solidifies the fact that the front-runner for best independent animated feature at the Annies gets an Oscar nomination, and TBH, in retrospect, I don't know why we all thought it had no shot, becuse it's very much an animators movie, and is the tpye of animtion the branch loves. The Branch loves animation with no dialogue and a bunch of unique character designs with expressive animation. Let's be honest here the PGA, Critics Choice, and BAFTA were never going for this movie because they rarely go for Indie stuff in the first place.
I have to keep that in mind next time when I make Oscar predictions. It’s still a surprise. Robot Dreams is pretty much like The Sea Beast last year. I had a feeling TMNT won’t be nominated because the Academy never nominated animated films based on animated tv shows for Best Animated Feature before. Even The Simpsons Movie got snubbed for Best Animated Feature, and that’s the highest grossing animated film based on an animated tv show.
@@joefrantzen6609 I think It's optional, and I think only at large members are allowed this Privilege, But I could be wrong; ethier way, I have a feeling this new rule isn't as powerful as one might think as movies. Klaus, Farmagdon , and now Robot Dreams, are clearly animation branch choices, making me wonder if very few membes actually vote, to make a massive difference
I think that shows how good the category was. Killers was a fantastic screenplay, but the others were just has popular or more so. Just because the Academy didn't nominate it, doesn't mean it was a bad screenplay.
People can say whatever they want about this stuff but this is Christmas for me. I spend all year planning and preparing and studying like mad for little moments like getting to share in this joy with folks like you guys and the thriving community we have. To love cinema is to appreciate the value and potential of humanity and so what if we get (probably too) worked up along the way. This is just so much fun and I love all of you guys that help me validate an obsession that, to me, feels like second nature.
12:05 A little annoying to hear Oscar Expert complain just because it didn’t get ALL the nominations he wanted. It got Picture, Director, took out Killers in screenplay. They clearly liked it
I was so ecstatic to see Wazhazhe in original song! I'd been hopedicting it for a while, thinking it'd be amazing to see performed live at the ceremony. Definitely helped soften the blow of that god-awful score lineup lol.
The Zone of Interest screenplay nom over Killers is based on the accomplishment of the adaptation. The novel is quite different from the movie, with the exception of the setting. Both the novel and the movie have similar themes, but they explore them in far different ways. Glazer completely eliminated two of the main characters from the novel and chose to focus on just the commandant and his wife. I easily see how the writers branch gave significant credit to Glazer for his approach to adapting Amis’s novel in a unique way, compared to just being a straightforward adaptation.
It has to be noted that the couple in the movie existed in real life and Glazer researched their life and took information from statements of people who knew them. It really has nothing to do with the novel except for the concentration camp setting.
Sad though because it's a deserving nominee. The score fit the film perfectly, and the new main theme and its use in the film is an all-time classic, but nobody cares because the film was a flop.
Not to get too sappy, but I just want to thank you guys for what you do! You bring me a lot of joy, and I appreciate the effort you guys put into your videos. Looking forward to this season's finale! Very upset about Melton's snub.
Happy with most of the nominations.. especially for Colman Domingo and the rest of the actor categories.. Happy about all of the Anatomy of a Fall noms and sad that Past Lives only got 2. Crossing my fingers for The Boy and the Heron.
Annette Bening and Jodie Foster were excellent in NYAD. I am very happy to see these raw, badass performances from older women recognized. No stunt doubles for Bening-she swam every stroke. The chatter around that movie is not even vaguely ageist, it's blatant. Five nominations for Annette, and two wins already for Jodie. And people really thought they wouldn't make the cut? I knew Annette was in the second i saw NYAD. 👏👏 Here for it.
Happy "watching The Oscar Expert and Brother Bro meltdown" Day to all those who celebrate. Overall a great bunch of noms. Delighted for Past Lives, The Zone of Interest and The Holdovers. I get why people are mad for Gerwig and Robbie, but I personally feel that they were nominated in the categories that mattered. Barbie wouldn't have been anything without Gerwig's script, which she was recognised for and I suspect she will win. Similarly Robbie lobbied for and executive produced the most successful movie of 2023 and was recognised as a producer. I feel like there were better acting performances last year. As an executive producer I bet she is delighted with all 8 nominations.
I think that a lot of Academy members placed their votes for Margot as a producer, rather than in the acting branch. I think a good amount of Oscar members voted for Margot in the Best Picture category, which allowed them to vote for their personal favorites, without feeling about for snubbing Margot or feel like they’d wasted their vote.
@@davy209 Technically Cooper and Stone did get Best Picture and acting nominations (plus Original Screenplay for Cooper), not that they were likely to get snubbed for acting based on predictions.
@@davy209 for what though? you guys like to say that (insert actor here) is snubbed their entire careers but what has blunt done that warrants a nomination?
@marcochen9117- I think Emily Blunt was absolutely terrific in films like: “The Devil Wears Prada”, “Into The Woods”, “Sicario”, “The Girl on the Train”, and “A Quiet Place”. All of these really shows her range as a very versatile actress who can do comedy, drama, action, and musical film genres, and I wouldn’t complain if she was nominated for any one of those movies, in my opinion.
You were completely right bro. I’m just glad she’s at least nominated as a producer, since that’s what she seems to be the most proud of. It sucks that comedic performances often get so overlooked in the Lead category.
The brilliance of margots performance is that she made it look like an easy crowd pleasing turn in a blockbuster movie but there were so many layers to it.Truly a snub!
@@pb.j.1753I think it just comes down to genre bias. I dunno why the academy seems incapable of nominating more than one comedic performance in the lead category.

@@townsongsexcept he won. Unsure if Warren ever won outside of honorary Oscar. I think Williams got in because he says it's his last score and he's a vet in this.
Nothing for All Of Us Strangers. Such great performances and direction. To me, the biggest snub, especially considering Maestro, a film I didn't care much for at all, got nominations instead.
I just want to note a couple things in shorts: - Island in Between for doc short was 15th in odds and got a nomination for Documentary Short (for some reason?) - Invincible and Knight making it in Live Action Short as #10 and 11 - Good call on Once Upon a Studio not making it in Animated Short, there were also a couple of surprise noms there too (especially Pachyderme, which is so good)
By the way this the third year in a row where 2 categories at the Oscars had the exact same nominees this year being Costumes and Production Design, last year was Director and Original Screenplay and the year before that was Cinematography and Production Design.
13:50 They are oscars darlings . WHAT? When the last time Jodie got an oscar nomination you guys were not even an embryo. Foster has not been nominated for oscar since 1995. Benning hasnt been nominated since 2011.

@quentintickler4615 To be completely honest I like Spider-Verse better than a few of the films that got nominated (Maestro, Killers, Poor Things). But it’s fine, I knew it was dead as soon as it missed Critics Choice. It’ll probably win Animated still I would blame Pinocchio missing score and song on EEAAO’s over-performance
My Dad REFUSED to see Barbie, so I went with my mum. After we came out of the cinema she said "That was brilliant, I bet Ken will get a nomination, not Barbie, the Academy does stuff like that"

I feel like it must be said, just to make sure: Award nominations will never satisfy everyone. It’s okay to be at least a little sad/annoyed/possibly mad at things that made it/didn’t make it. Take a small consolation that your favourites are still your favourites even if they aren’t nominated for awards. What that DOESN’T mean is to bash award bodies because they didn’t choose your favourites. Every awards body is different and complicated. Everyone has opinions and that’s cool and all, but that does not entitle you to think that your picks are “better” than an awards body’s. Frankly, there is no such thing as a “better opinion” when it comes to awards because art is in some ways subjective. People will have different experiences and tastes to bring when they decide the nominees and the eventual winners. Be careful not to dehumanize awards bodies because there are people behind the decisions.
Oppenheimer is on a huge momentum shift, I would be big if they sweep. Plus, Greta gerwig snubbed for director and Margot robbie for actress a huge shocker. Past lives is done at this point
Margot deserved a Best Actress nomination 😢. She embodied the role of Barbie perfectly and brought the character to life. Her performance also invoked many emotions for girls and women worldwide.
Also can we take a second to realize that if, in a pre-2020 Oscars year, Oppenheimer was eligible for Visual Effects, it would’ve absolutely been nominated for Visual Effects AND Sound Editing? That would’ve made Oppenheimer the first movie in Oscars history to get 15 noms 😱
As much I don’t go crazy for Nyad, I was shocked it got some nominations. Margot and Gerwig was snubbed but they both got nominated in 2 different topics. Awesome vid guys 👍

I’m a really big John Williams fan, and sure the score of Indiana Jones Dial of Destiny is good, but hell nah it’s not an original score how did it even qualify for Oscar’s. Love that people are continuing to recognise his success but like this is kindof getting out of hand when he basically gets auto nominated just by making a score no matter how good it is. Also Academy needs to lose their anti-animated film mindset because it’s like they don’t think it’s a real film with the amount they just snub them from everything when they actually deserve it.
Joe Hisaishi’s score for The Boy and the Heron was worthy of a nomination. Numerous other scores he’s responsible for also have been worthy. Is The Taste of Things eligible for the next Oscars upon its official release? Just curious about that

Im very sad I dropped it on my predictions last minute.
I thought that the entirety of the academy voted on the animated categories instead of just the animation branch?
Animated feature isn't a brached category
@@joefrantzen6609 I think It's optional, and I think only at large members are allowed this Privilege, But I could be wrong; ethier way, I have a feeling this new rule isn't as powerful as one might think as movies. Klaus, Farmagdon , and now Robot Dreams, are clearly animation branch choices, making me wonder if very few membes actually vote, to make a massive difference
Never clicked on a video faster in my life
Never clicked off a video faster either. Yikes.
Me too 😂😂😂😂
I called the Killers screenplay snub, i got Mank vibes where it's like Is this REALLY one of the best screenplays
it really is and I don’t think that an oscar’s snub means it’s not
I think that shows how good the category was. Killers was a fantastic screenplay, but the others were just has popular or more so. Just because the Academy didn't nominate it, doesn't mean it was a bad screenplay.
@@aidanobrien6156 yeah no shit pal, ofc the academy doesn’t always nominate the best movies
@@grovers_paradise alright then
People can say whatever they want about this stuff but this is Christmas for me.
I’m shocked Spiderverse didn’t get in for score but I guess the takeaway is don’t doubt John Williams 🤷🏻♀️
I wish Joe Hisaishi made it in.
Jonathan Glazer Nation we're celebrating.
Most People: Zone of Interest will overperform!
Zone of Interest: Well yes, but actually no.
it still did well
12:05 A little annoying to hear Oscar Expert complain just because it didn’t get ALL the nominations he wanted. It got Picture, Director, took out Killers in screenplay. They clearly liked it
So happy for Sandra Hüller, the Zone of interest and Oppenheimer 🎉
Its 5am here in Australia and I just woke up to absolute whiplash
This year has the record for most amount of combined nominations from the best picture nominees with 71 nominations
I was so ecstatic to see Wazhazhe in original song! I'd been hopedicting it for a while, thinking it'd be amazing to see performed live at the ceremony. Definitely helped soften the blow of that god-awful score lineup lol.
Hopedicting!
i am SO EXCITED for that oscar stage to get indigenized when the song is performed
It’s actually “Poorppenheimer” guys, sorry Barbie!!!
Yeah, they made Jesse Plemons a supporting character and expanded the villain role!
It has to be noted that the couple in the movie existed in real life and Glazer researched their life and took information from statements of people who knew them. It really has nothing to do with the novel except for the concentration camp setting.
That John Williams reaction was an all time great. 😂😂😂
RIP Fantasia and Dominic
Literally look forward to this video every year
Happy "watching The Oscar Expert and Brother Bro meltdown" Day to all those who celebrate.
Yeah. I think Gerwig is a much better writer than a director.
Screenplay nom is very deserved.
I'm just happy for Emily Blunt. Her fist Oscar nom! 👏
It’s about damn time! She has been snubbed for way too long!
Emily Blunt? Really?
Her first???
@@davy209 for what though? you guys like to say that (insert actor here) is snubbed their entire careers but what has blunt done that warrants a nomination?
@marcochen9117- I think Emily Blunt was absolutely terrific in films like: “The Devil Wears Prada”, “Into The Woods”, “Sicario”, “The Girl on the Train”, and “A Quiet Place”. All of these really shows her range as a very versatile actress who can do comedy, drama, action, and musical film genres, and I wouldn’t complain if she was nominated for any one of those movies, in my opinion.
I told you Margot Robbie will be this year‘s Lady Gaga in House of Gucci - getting in everywhere but Oscars!!!
Yeah I was really thinking she might get nominated at first but yeah it definitely turned out the same Gaga with House Of Gucci
@@prathameshrane5841 I agree she actually deserved it. But she was just vulnerable in this competition.
@@pb.j.1753I think it just comes down to genre bias. I dunno why the academy seems incapable of nominating more than one comedic performance in the lead category.
Petition to have these two read the Oscar nominations next year.
I am more interested in this than the actual nominee reveals 😂
The nominations for Anatomy of a fall are a perfect combo... Excellent film...
Only wish Milo got nominated too but that was never going to happen
@@purekinemaMilo over Ruffalo would have been the best outcome
Someone mentioned a great stat: Lead Actresses have not all been from Best Picture nominees since like the 70‘s apparently. And he was right (Annette Benning - Nyad).
I wonder if that’s the reason Margot Robbie or Greta Lee didn’t get in.
@@laurajones1773 i don't think voters are actively thinking about that though haha

Ryan Gosling ironically carrying Barbie 😂
And Billie Eilish is their best shot at a win. Poor Things might take costume/production design.

@@singstreetcar5881 Of course Barbie is much better than House of Gucci it wasn’t about comparing movie qualities. Just one example of an actress missing Oscars while getting every precursors, Amy Adams could be another one for Robbie here
@@zeyneperatalar9216I think the Amy Adams comparison is more accurate. Since both Arrival and Barbie were both best picture juggernauts.
Not to mention both Arrival and Barbie had 8 nominations each.
Good to see Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Ryan Gosling in there! Three of my favorite performances of the year
Finally saw it over the weekend.
Emma Stone was very, very committed 😅
John Williams over Joe Hisaishi is the most heinous thing out of all the nominations
absolutely
I’m so disappointed that Joe Hisaishi got snubbed! He has consistently delivered great work for so many Studio Ghibli films for decades already and he should’ve received the recognition that he deserves!
john williams is the diane warren of score
@@townsongs so true
@@townsongsexcept he won. Unsure if Warren ever won outside of honorary Oscar. I think Williams got in because he says it's his last score and he's a vet in this.
Nothing for All Of Us Strangers. Such great performances and direction. To me, the biggest snub, especially considering Maestro, a film I didn't care much for at all, got nominations instead.
Video opens and Justin clutching the pillow
i'm so glad for mark ruffalo
Yes. But sad no Dafoe. He *just misses* so often. (I'm thinking The Lighthouse here....)
I just want to note a couple things in shorts:
- Island in Between for doc short was 15th in odds and got a nomination for Documentary Short (for some reason?)
- Invincible and Knight making it in Live Action Short as #10 and 11
- Good call on Once Upon a Studio not making it in Animated Short, there were also a couple of surprise noms there too (especially Pachyderme, which is so good)
By the way this the third year in a row where 2 categories at the Oscars had the exact same nominees this year being Costumes and Production Design, last year was Director and Original Screenplay and the year before that was Cinematography and Production Design.
Terrible day for the All of Us Strangers hive
Won't be forgotten by those who saw it.
Never had a chance
Both Gretas are not having a great morning... Happy for Sandra and her films' performance here 🎉
theres gonna be a stat on gretas not getting nominated in the future
I cannot believe that the Disney short film with all the characters was not nominated. Everyone said that that was the most likely to win!!
13:50 They are oscars darlings . WHAT? When the last time Jodie got an oscar nomination you guys were not even an embryo. Foster has not been nominated for oscar since 1995. Benning hasnt been nominated since 2011.
I think with how strong Anatomy of a Fall is it could snag a surprise win. Screenplay is the obvious one but what if we saw Huller take the Bafta!! Think about it…
I like the surprises. But the original score category made me mad.
Why can't they nominate Animated Films in ANY OTHER CATEGORIES?!?!?
It sucks animated films are only nominated in the animated feature category.
@laurajones1773 It used to not be that way, the last two years have been like that though. They clearly didn’t listen to what Guillermo del Toro said
@@seankoontz4235 yeah Pinocchio deserved song and score. Spider-Verse deserved at least score. Idk about VFX or Best Picture but 🤷
@quentintickler4615 To be completely honest I like Spider-Verse better than a few of the films that got nominated (Maestro, Killers, Poor Things). But it’s fine, I knew it was dead as soon as it missed Critics Choice. It’ll probably win Animated still
I would blame Pinocchio missing score and song on EEAAO’s over-performance
My Dad REFUSED to see Barbie, so I went with my mum. After we came out of the cinema she said "That was brilliant, I bet Ken will get a nomination, not Barbie, the Academy does stuff like that"
Exactly what I thought.
All I know is I hope this taught France a thing or two about choosing their international feature contenders lol
They did it before with Portrait of a lady on fire. They don't learn lol
@@BambuProductions well with Protrait of a Lady on Fire, that ended up not getting any nominations at all because France didn’t pick it for their selection. Anatomy was so strong it got nominated in other categories, almost guaranteeing it would’ve been in contention to win the international feature Oscar.
Anatomy of a fall is talked in English, couldn't be send for international film

I feel like it must be said, just to make sure:
Award nominations will never satisfy everyone.
Well said...
Oppenheimer is on a huge momentum shift, I would be big if they sweep. Plus, Greta gerwig snubbed for director and Margot robbie for actress a huge shocker. Past lives is done at this point
Past Lives was DOA unfortunately, at least it got a screenplay nom but will probably lose to Anatomy of a Fall
It was not shocking. Honestly.
Margot deserved a Best Actress nomination 😢. She embodied the role of Barbie perfectly and brought the character to life. Her performance also invoked many emotions for girls and women worldwide.
@@RyanM268 at least she got nominated for best picture as a producer
@Haldered unless if the holdovers win original screenplay
Also can we take a second to realize that if, in a pre-2020 Oscars year, Oppenheimer was eligible for Visual Effects, it would’ve absolutely been nominated for Visual Effects AND Sound Editing? That would’ve made Oppenheimer the first movie in Oscars history to get 15 noms 😱
