I thought Smash Tour wasn’t as bad as people said, but I tried it. I literally lost first and then I was brought in for Sudden Death and I won. I was like, “WHAT WAS THAT?!??” It was so idiotic. And why is it time battle?
Yeah... the final battle event makes that the player who plays better when time's over have a good chance to win, even if they get defeated 1st. meaning that if your stats are better than the rest, even if you have a single character, as long as you KO the most characters from the other players/AI, you can win when you get defeated as long as the fight ends via time, and as you said, if for some reason the KO numbers from you ties with another player who managed to survive until time over or got defeated, get 1 last chance to take the game via Sudden Death (which honestly is stupid and wished they used the online tournament judgment rules... which made Sudden Deaths extremely unlikely to happen as a lot of things would have to tie in the status results like attack accuracy, how much damage you did and took, etc. when it is a stock and/or KO tie).
I must admit I hated it at first… but a friend convainced me it was fun. I gave it another shot. And we had a lot of fun and we played it multiple times.

The hyperaggressiveness of the bots is just ridiculous when you're playing with only bots too. I once had all 3 use a consumable on me starting a match so I started at 100%, tiny, and asleep and unable to move. How in the hell did they think that was any fun?
The bots not having ANY difficulty options is my biggest gripe with this entire mode. While I'd say I'm decent at Smash and my sis *isn't exactly awful at it* either, both of us would enjoy this mode a hell of a lot more if we could just take it easy during it, fighting off lower level CPUs like we always do, just in a more roundabout way that could be fun for the novelty of it.
What annoyed me the most about Smash Tour was one of the achievements. First, you must be lucky enough to have a Metroid spawn onto the board. Then, you must be lucky enough to run into it before another player does to have it steal your stat boosts. And lastly, you must be lucky enough to run into it yet again to recover the stat boosts.
I genuinely wonder how much the game would benefit from a fixed turn order. Nothing is stopping you from just treating it as such. Just roll a dice to determine a turn order. Then have everyone put down the controllers while it isn't your turn.
Would be possible... if the overworld section didn't ALSO have a time limit, making it impossible for any of the player to take the slightest bit of time to strategize without impeding on another player's time (or their own if they're last to go)
I actually enjoyed smash tour, but I agree with your criticisms. It feels very half baked. More boards with interesting themes and better customization options would have gone a long way.
Wanna know of a game where players move on an open map, explore different checkpoints, collect items to alter the events and/or mess with other players, and features actual goals to aim towards? 100% Orange Juice is essentially all that, and it works really well.
I feel like this is a you problem and not a problem with the mode. Like, at one point in the video you talk fast to make it seems like there is a lot in the mode, but what you are describing is very simple. Move around the board and if you run into someone a battle starts. Thats not hard to understand. I can sympathize with the amount of info, but its something you get after a few rounds. If there is one sin Smash Tour has, it's moving too fast which I think turned people off on a fun mode (better than WoL but most modes are better than WoL). The reason I say its a you problem because if the footage is all yours, you should have understood what to do. It's very easy to plan a turn since what you are going for is very obvious. Got to towers, pick up items on the way. The difficulty is in there being a lot but this comes with time. If you didn't like it, fine. Can't change your opinion. But I think some of these criticism wont apply to people who played it more than once or twice.
Quick reminder: Sakurai considers Smash 3DS and Smash Wii U separate games, as stated in his interview with Kotaku about Mega Man's inclusion. This makes Smash 3DS Smash 4 while Smash Wii U is Smash 5, and Smash Ultimate is Smash 6. But wait! The word "for" in Smash for 3DS and Smash for Wii U has to be a deliberate way of saying "4" as in "Smash 4" - right? Wrong. Japanese don't have a number association with the English word "For" the only reason the games were named as they were was because if they were given proper subtitles like Melee and Brawl, Sakurai thought that parents would confuse the two Smash games since they would be released close to each other, which is why they are given the monikers of "For 3DS" and "For Wii U" respectively, to make it clearer. This is numbering of Smash games is also referenced in Ultimate: The stage list goes from in order of Ultimate's Battlefield and Final Destination, Smash 64, Melee, Brawl, Smash 3DS, Smash Wii U, the DLC stages of Smash 3DS/Wii U, and finally Ultimate's stages and its DLC. So when you're asking for Smash 6, just be aware you're already playing it, you should be asking for Smash 7.
You also should've brought up all the challenges associated with the mode (challenges being one of the only things to actually do in this soulless husk of a game). While there isn't an insane number of Smash Tour-related challenges (though granted, having to play this god-awful mode even once is too much), there is quite a bit of BS tied to them. I especially despised that stupid Metroid challenge, the one where you have to let your bonuses get stolen to then steal them back from that same Metroid. What really makes this challenge unbearable is how freakishly rare the Metroid is. For whatever ungodly reason, they seem to have made the Metroid the least frequently appearing hazard there is (even less frequent than the likes of bosses), and just to make it all worse, when the Metroid finally does appear, it's only around for a few turns, giving you a VERY narrow window to pull this off (I managed to do it after a few hours of having to play through this horrible mode, and I doubt I would've been able to pull it off had I not cheesed most of the board with 3 different controllers).

I remember Smash Tour giving me a hard time before, but oh my god, I have never felt SO personally attacked by a game mode. 😖 I even remember cheating by grabbing some Wii remotes to make them take control of the three other miis because they were giving me such a hard time along with the RNG and bad luck, and I got sick of it. And then I’ve recently decided to revisit Smash Bros for Wii U years later and tried to finish as many challenges as possible just to kill time, and decided to revisit Smash Tour to finish the remaining challenges that are tied to it, and was reminded of how much of a bad time this gave me. I got tired of it to the point where I’ve decided to gain the remaining Smash Tour challenge rewards with hammers since I was just so done with it. Worst thing I’ve ever played. If I ever decide to start fresh again with this game, which probably isn’t too likely to happen, I’m seriously going to use golden hammers to immediately unlock the rewards you get from those challenges so I won’t ever have to start a single game of Smash Tour, which is what I should’ve done the moment those challenges became visible on the challenge menu. As someone who really enjoys the Subspace Emissary from Brawl, they should’ve just taken Smash Run from the 3DS version of Smash 4 and put it in Smash Bros for Wii U. I know that’s kinda in there with Master Fortress in Classic on 8.0-9.0 difficulty, which I’m happy with by the way, but they still should’ve incorporated Smash Run nevertheless. I mean, heck, imagine how good the game mode would even look on SSB for Wii U, let alone Ultimate on switch.
