This is the first video of what I consider to be Herr Kaufmann's real voice. This video is actually a pleasure to listen to and I don't feel my throat tightening up.
You clearly know little about opera singing, the first thing you notice in this tenor is that his technique is really bad, he is opening his mouth too wide and thus you can clearly hear his voice remains inside and doesnt proyect correctly, he is pushing too much, and you can clearly hear he's pushing with the throat, the proyection of the voice is not free and not well placed, this tenor will ruin his voice in a few years... He is a tenor that has the voice coloring of a baritone. I bet he could have gone either way if he wanted to. You could even tell back then that some day he would be singing the Heldentenor roles.
Interesting ... I never knew that Kaufmann sang Mozart. I guess this was before his career really moved forward. Now he fully uses his voice with a dark, rich color and heavier repertoire. I enjoyed this interpretation.

Jonas has a fine voice here. I disagree with most of these comments. This is his real voice, extending into the upper range with no problem, no over darkening, or swallowing of the tone like he is doing in the heavier roles. In all the heavier stuff I have heard his voice lacks ping he sounds he is over covering the voice to make it sound more "Dramatic" much like Jose Cura.
After all this guessing, Jonas Kaufmann has now arrived and reading a lot about his problems 10-12 years ago is old history. We have now a tenor who has become the gold standard for all the tenors, and I am one who is eagerly awaiting his Lohengrin in July in Munich. It will be a revelation!
This video (as well as his Student Prince duet) presents a nice example of Jonas' vocal development. Search for his 'Carmen' videos and you'll notice that the voice is not pushed or forced but, rather, it has grown considerably since 1998. This is a great resource for the young singer!
Such an amazing lesson-a great singing voice is mainly about technique. Caruso, Del Monaco, Corelli and now Kaufman all had mediocre voices until they found the perfect technique for themselves. What a wonderfully encouraging lesson for all singers!!!

I agree with aspsingr. I was listening to a radio transmission of "La Traviata" and I heard a tremendous voice, beautiful and well projected. Really interesting! Lots of people talk of him as if he had just appeared out of nowhere and might as well just leave in a couple of years. This teaches us differently. The only thing i don't like about jonas Kaufmann is his way of singing piano in the higher register. i always have the feeling that his voice, for the purpose of singing softly, is falling back into his throat and that he's singing with too much air. He doesn't do that at all here! And he seems stronger in the high notes today.
I'm so surprised with the people who fail to see how the voice color in this recording is something that is consistent with the vocal color he has nowadays, he's just younger and not as advanced in technique.
You´re right. But is refreshing to listen a tenor "male" voice in opera roles. I like the Alfredo Kraus recording because this. This aria is very difficult... specially the "A´s" of the end.
people are inconsistent about that, sometimes they say node and sometimes lymph node. they're two different things and there's no reason to remove a lymph node, a plain old "node" however is a callous-like hard growth that occurs by the repeated rough interaction between two organic tissues. the first surgery shows up if you google "vocal surgery kaufmann", it was in 1995 and talked about on his website and wikipedia
I singer doesn't change technique just for fun. It's usually because they encounter vocal problems. If you change repertoire you don't change techniques if your voice is responding. But when it's not responding you start the Calvary of looking for solutions. Kaufmann decided to lower the larynx a little more and he found security and a darker sound. That as a listener a prefer the first one, no doubt. But look at his career before and after.
Hi Mariade: I think, you are not right. He never treid to be a spinto but has this colour in his voice. His voice doesn´t seem to be damaged when you remember the absolute gorgeous Don Jose. Actually he never really was a lyric mozart tenor.
He was very young then, so he sang accordingly. His voice eventually became suited to more demanding roles in both Wagner and Verdi operas. He didn’t hurry that is why he is so good now.
I agree. This is bright, healthy, resonant, sustainable, expressive, and flexible. Now, at least to my ears, it is over-dark, dull, inexpressive and inflexible. And it has proven to be unsustainable as well, as he has had vocal nodes twice since this video. It is sad that someone with such skills, good looks, and charisma should succumb to either lazy technique, bad technical advice, or both.
Kaufmann was young here, just starting out. It's not the most elegant rendition, but the voice was, and remains, beautiful. The bottom line is that Kaufmann has said that he couldn't have continued this method of singing - that it was strangling him. The proof is that he sings Verdi, Puccini, Wagner, Massenet - singing for hours and hours, and he sounds great in all of them.
+Dave Glo #AMEN I am studying his technique very closely. He made a huge comeback after loosing his technique. He is my idol ... and his voice is just perfection.

Raul, I am 100% with you.I wonder how my comment made you think that I dislike Jonas.I love Jonas very-very much and think that he is the most intelligent tenor of all times . Nobody , just nobody was singing in Wagner,Puccini , Mozart , Verdi, Massenet operas and was singing so good and in such short period of time. Jonas is best of the best.
+Arkady Kholodenko it doesn't matter if they do or don't. It doesn't change the fact that he is singing constricted and girding the tongue. Hell, you can heart he "uhr" in his vowels.
This aria has the power to melt anyone I do believe. Mozart was the master of the glorious line and beautiful aria. Try the David Hobson performance, he was only 29 at the time. This is also lovely.
I'm a great Jonnie fan! And lately he has become an extrovert... which he wasn't when he signed CDs with Helmut Deutsch at Glyptoteket in Copenhagen some years ago.-):-):-) SUPER!!!
Yes, but when you consider that he is actually a spinto tenor singing this incredibly difficult aria, you can appreciate his artistry and musicianship, that he is able to do as much as he does with this sublime Mozart aria.
Insulting? I prefer passionate. Probably a bit of both. I saw Allan Clayton at New York City Opera's 'Cosi' not long ago. Voice not quite as massive as the typical American listener likes(ie not full Italian Lyric), but the sensitivity, tuning and ease with which he sang made the aria nothing short of stunning. For the record, I don't mind big voices singing Mozart. I like this video to a degree. My point was only that although his voice is clearly amazing, he does not pull it off without fault.
Hear Hear. This guy is amazing. Emotional, musical, dynamic. Wide range of rep. One question -- his vocal color is SO much darker now. Does it make sense to move from this his sweet, leaner tone here, to a more baritonal timbre? I do know he had some vocal trouble -- but I believe that was only technical, not anything leading to a medical issue. Whatever, he's totally back on track now. Saw him in Parsifal. He rocked that sucker!
@arturotenor76 his dark timbre, full middle register, vibrato and lower passaggio all scream "please let me sing my real dramatic repertoire" but that's why I like this. dark, masculine tenor voices are so much more 3 dimensional and have more pleasant timbre
Almost every operatic aria posted on TH-cam gets comments like: "he / she is a horrible singer " , " he / she has the wrong voice for this part ", " he / she is too young / old for this part ". Thank God that all our wonderful artists don't pay attention to all the pompous know-it-alls on TH-cam. If they did we'd have no opera at all!
Both in voice and technique, he is one of the greatest today and ever. However, in this early performance he does in fact show various flaws in technique. Wisely, he was not satisfied with his accomplishments and he continued to study and refine his technique to the point that today he is one of the true masters. The maturing of his voice gives a beautiful darker color, but his continued study also played a big part.
@catbaddoc have you heard him in any of the recent wagner recordings? His "Mein lieber Schwan" has an abundance of competent dynamic variation. Honestly, Jonas Kaufmann is one of those currently performing tenors that DOES place a clear emphasis on expression instead of singing full throttle all the time. I don't understand why you guys are being nasty and rude. Everyone has their opinion I get it, but you don't have to be rude or disregard what others have to say.... You might disagree with what we say, great just don't feel superior by rejecting our comments.... if we said something is because we all agree (well majority of us) liked and have something nice to say and we love Jonas .... If you dont like it its fine ... but again dont be mean about it.
Jonas Kaufmann is a superb tenor!
This aria has the power to melt anyone I do believe. Mozart was the master of the glorious line and beautiful aria. Try the David Hobson performance, he was only 29 at the time. This is also lovely.
@GERMANYFrankie You're absolutly right, this is a gem before his technique got in the way of his talent, it happens too often, malleureusememt,
A very young JK. He now sings much heavier roles. But you could see then that he was going places....
He rocked that sucker!
wow, pitch is all over the place in this performance.
Great tenor!!! if someone has any thing else from him please post it
@arturotenor76
his dark timbre, full middle register, vibrato and lower passaggio all scream "please let me sing my real dramatic repertoire" but that's why I like this. dark, masculine tenor voices are so much more 3 dimensional and have more pleasant timbre
The maturing of his voice gives a beautiful darker color, but his continued study also played a big part.
this is very very nice...he's voice is much darker theese days. i wonder how would this sound now
Such a beautiful voice. Even though he seems to be singing easy here, he´s flat many times.
And nasal.
Nonsense!!
Minunata voce !
Wow, Kaufmann sounded great in 1998! Something must have gone horribly wrong in the 21st century for him...
I'm very suprised to hear your critique :P
