  • James on Cameo singing Innocence Faded by Dream Theater.
    "Callow and vain
Fixed like a fossil, shrouding pain
    Passionless stage
Distant like brothers, wearing apathetic displays
Sharing flesh like envy in cages
    Condescending
    Not intending to end
    Some will transcend spinning years
    One as if time disappears".

I saw people saying LaBrie couldn't reach high notes from this song anymore (Condescending Not Intending part), specially because when he sang this song last year in another Cameo snippet, he skipped this high note and finished the snippet before that part. And then he comes right now and slay all the parts even when he's older. Time proved that what James LaBrie really needed was rest and appropiate technique.

Damn, I love the guy and all his work, but we have to see how it turns out live. He's singing the songs a bit slower in all these Cameos. Hope he can manage it and destroy everything with an amazing return to the stages.

@@alecolon4601 you must be deaf. I saw a show on the recent tour and this was the first time he used this much backing tracks to carry him through the set. He doesn't sing a single high note. They are all from tape and he sings in a lower register over it, and he does it so quiet that you are hearing more of the backing tracks than the live singing.

It's clear the COVID break helped give his voice some much-needed rest. I'm just afraid that once they get fully back on tour, it'll just go right back. DT tours WAY too much and too vigorously. It doesn't matter who you are or how good your technique is, touring that much will kill your voice.

So if I can narrow the two main faults to his vocals over the years:
1: His vibrato is very slow and often unstable
2: His attack is very soft and doesn't punch as hard as it used to.
This is just what i've noticed. I still think he's a great vocalist, but he's definitely not on the level he once was, and I don't think touring with his older songs ever helps.

This is an F5, only a half step below the fabled F#5 in Learning to Live, and a whole step below a G5 in his early 90s performances of The Killing Hand.

I am a big fan of James Labrie. I am sorry that most often than not his live performances are bad. It is one thing listening to a studio album and another on live performances. Live at budokan was still very good, but it had a steep decline over the years. I am fan of another singer that suffered this, Edu Falaschi (ex- Angra, substituted by Fabio Leone). Edu is now back in solo, singing as his early days. It seems that the constant struggle really affects the health of a lot of singers, and if they are given enough time they really may return to their best shape. I am really hoping James Labrie is able to return to his glory days.
