I figured I might as well share this story here. So round where I grew up, a little further east than Berea in Kentucky the power company used one of these Hughes (real one, not RC) to check for downed lines out in the brush for several counties. Well it turns out the pilot liked to stop for lunch at one of the restaurants in my town, so every now and then I’d go to lunch and see that helicopter parked in a field right next to the trucks in the parking lot. Always brought a smile to my face, especially when my folks let me stay long enough to see it take off.
Just loved it I used to have a scale Bell 47G petrol Heli with full scale cockpit and paint job that I used to fly at weekends but that was a long time ago I am now 70 and used to fly when I was 30 years old at bater point in Poole Dorset England so it brings back some lovely times and all radio then was Futaba so thanks for the memories it was so nice and just love Flitetest and all the shows thanks Josh and Josh. Bob
Love your guys stuff. I can't stop watching them. It's a hobby I doubt I can afford to ever pick up. But I just can't stop watching these vids. Great machines.
I've done many hours in 500's and this is a brilliant machine, even accurate sound effects. Only major spoiler is the 2 blade main rotors. Surely you can get a four blade head after going to all the other super efforts.
Love that you have a Scale Heli on your show! More please!! This is a Hughes 500D though not E as stated at 00:54. The E model has a pointy nose, not a round D shaped one!
Nice kit & the sound makes it seem almost real! My only slight criticism is obviously a scale five blade head (although mainly only noticeable when it's stationery), & the landing skids need to be moved further forward in the uprights like they are IRL. But with a rearward CoG, that can be overlooked. All in all though, it's still awesome! P.S. nicely flown too!👍
My friend and I got 500D kits back in the 80s, he finished his first and got in two flights, they he bought my kit from me to get the parts to put his back together after the crash. I've stuck with airplanes since then. Helos are really cool but, you've really got to have your stuff together.
Love the vids, stumbled on your YT channel and all of the sudden I see a local from my hometown! Im from Berea and have met bill before, long ago. such a surprise! great vids guys, keep it up!
T.C. would be proud to see this. I absolutely love this Magnum PI Scale Hughes 500. Awesome Sound System. I would buy this in a heartbeat if I was a proficient heli pilot. Thanks Guys. ~R~
CCWSig I can fly helies, just not well enough to invest in a nice, scale one like this. 26 years flying RC planes, but only a year flying RC Helies. No, my Visa cannot take the hits it would receive if I dove into helies like I have planes. :-) ~R~
Rick Head Either way, it can be a expensive hobby. My Idle up 2 used to be labeled as "Visa" in my aurora 9. I always got carried away when the head speed went up.
You said that there will be more stuff in the store, so there better be the flitetest jacket, not the hoodie that Josh was wearing this episode but the one Josh Bixler was wearing when you guys were outside on the RC FPV Kit episode. Please sell them! Thank you :)
Sounds and looks great! I've logged quite a few hours riding around in 500s and you have me impressed! You skipped the 2 minute cool down before shutting the turbine down though! ;-)
im building an electric Rc AH6 littlebird helicopter but its not gonna have the sound effects features. my only question about this project is what battery supply would you recommend for this build? Could a 6cell battery work? and how much flying time would there be?
Wow Berea, sooner or later I'm going to meet someone closer to Lawrenceburg, KY that can help this old fixed wing flyer learn to fly heli's ! Great vid.
Now you just need to set it up with the Gyro in Rate hold mode for the proper scale flying. Heading hold gyros are wrong for scale. It also makes turns smoother with a rate hold as the tail wind-vanes naturally
One item that should be mentioned with any flybarless system.. Once initialized the proper direction correction for the swash should also be confirmed prior to spool up
Yeah, I usually double check whether all controls steer correctly also. I've saved more than a few crashes by doing so with servos that didn't respond during that check-up and needed replacement. Must say I'm very glad I found out about that prior to flying. Don't know what they have checked off camera though, but I agree with you. Helicopters in this size are not to mess with. :)
Looks nice. For me the biggest difference with a scale heli vs 3D is the lack of tail authority. I think a large part of that is the aerodynamics of a scale heli. You can feel the air pulling the tail around because of all the bodywork. I imagine this contributes to the porpoising on this one.
While true because it tends to experience more 'drag' in flight because of it's higher mass and what a fuselage does aerodynamically (more or less like a 'weather vane'), a lot comes down to getting the tail control rod to work as effectively as possible. This takes a little bit of trial and error and some skill building the kit, but realising a scale fuselage helicopter flies better with weaker or no wind and going the extra mile getting your tail control right will make these helicopter fly so much better, you wouldn't believe it. :)
Lol, everyone hates on the 3GX. I have one in my trex 800, 550 and 450. Never had any issues and have always been happy with them. I gotta laugh when someone says it's too complicated.
Love the model of T.C's helicopter. But the landing skids are not right for a scale helicopter............they must be put much forward in the holders at the Hughes 500
That sound system would be a great addition to any scale model... Now get a five blade rotor head, move those skid pipes to the correct location, and angle the tail boom down some, and you got a great scale 500D! In fairness to the 3GX it wont like any form of binding on your tail control rod (nor would a Vbar), and I wonder if the forward tilt on the rotormast has some untoward affect on its performance? BTW Scale is very addictive, and they are never completely finished! The devil is in the detail! Thanks for the share :)
Thank U , This must be the road less walked on in RC (scaled heli models). It's my cup of tea, just need patience, attention to details. Sacrifice power for realism. And if U still have a small part of the kid in U, and U see those models coming towards U, U get that chill on ur spine, lasting for the whole flight. Scaled helis are the only ones making me really intensely thrilled, to a point to lie on the floor beside the model to simply admire it. U get to a point to name ur models. Remember that Awesome plastic model plane U build when U were a kid, well now it's much much bigger & U can fly it. :) x 10
Parkzone has a real nice little three channel ready to fly plane that flys super slow easy to control looks like little butter fly I can fly it indoors in my apartment great first starter plane called night vapor has little LED's you can fly it at night too.
Hello FliteTest! I love your channel and productions! Quick question: I am about to install this RC Aerodyne MD 500 fuselage to my Blade 450X heli, but I am wondering what kind of performance decrease (battery life for example) I should expect? I am installing this because I dislike 3D flying on helis, however, I do like to sometimes fly fast and do the occasional flip and loop in Idleup. Would installing this upgrade pose a problem with a bit of aggressive scale flying? Thank you!

i love how Bill Blair adds a salute at the end =D, just makes me smile, he seems a cheery guy, and such a nice mint heli.
Just got a five blade head for my 500 ,should look really nice when I finish it ,great video thanks for sharing
Love your guys stuff. I can't stop watching them. It's a hobby I doubt I can afford to ever pick up. But I just can't stop watching these vids. Great machines.
Nice! I heard the Magnum PI theme in my head as soon as I saw the model!
you should add those sound cards to the builds love the realism it adds to what are amazing builds
I've done many hours in 500's and this is a brilliant machine, even accurate sound effects. Only major spoiler is the 2 blade main rotors. Surely you can get a four blade head after going to all the other super efforts.

Yeah I was thinking the same, or you could say it is and "E" model with a "D" model nose cone
I loved that helicopter as a kid. My dad even built me and my brother one to play in!
Yeah that was TC's helicopter in magnum i watched that show just for that helicopter and that car.
W4RD1N8ER i thought the exact thing
I just watched it for the helicopter too
I knew it looked familiar
Ha! Me too
Same here!
Nice kit & the sound makes it seem almost real!

Hey! My favorite TV heli! Always thought TC's chopper had a cool paint scheme. The sound effects board is a nice feature too. :-)
David rocking that awesome jacket and shades...
The only Thing what i have to say is ... Gut gemacht Flitetest und macht so weiter wie bisher ... And thank you from Germany
"T.C." Calvin's MD 500D from Magnum P.I.! Cool!
Its's good to see "Balsa Bustin' Bill" runnin' with the big dogs!
I had great luck with a Helicox system on a 450 scaler FBL. Nice heli. Thanks
This is way cooler because it has the Island Hopper paint job from Magnum PI.
Great to see a scale heli on the show!

I love it. That was great , the memorys, it took me back in the day in the 80`s
T.C. would be proud to see this. I absolutely love this Magnum PI Scale Hughes 500. Awesome Sound System. I would buy this in a heartbeat if I was a proficient heli pilot.
Thanks Guys.

But you too can be... If I can learn to fly them, trust me anyone can. Now can your Visa support it? That's the question.
CCWSig I can fly helies, just not well enough to invest in a nice, scale one like this. 26 years flying RC planes, but only a year flying RC Helies. No, my Visa cannot take the hits it would receive if I dove into helies like I have planes. :-)

Great video as always guys. We had a great time hanging out with yall. :) Yes I said Yall :)
flite test is my favoritest channel
Bill is so chill
Hi flite test team, can you make a video on RC ship making?
holy hell its about time they did a helicopter video!!! sweet sweet!
Man, this reminds me how much I miss the old intro music.
You said that there will be more stuff in the store, so there better be the flitetest jacket, not the hoodie that Josh was wearing this episode but the one Josh Bixler was wearing when you guys were outside on the RC FPV Kit episode. Please sell them! Thank you :)
For some reason I reconize the name Bill Blair.... How did you get clearance to fly over niagra falls?
Cool glasses bro...
Expo on the rudder will make yaw easier on the thumbs.
U R THE BEST i love this channel it is really relaxing
Awesome! I don't know much about helos and it would be really cool if you did a beginners series like you did for airplanes
from where to get these huge helicopter models
Sounds and looks great! I've logged quite a few hours riding around in 500s and you have me impressed! You skipped the 2 minute cool down before shutting the turbine down though! ;-)
Good choice of paint scheme!
Great guy. Great helicopter 🚁. Great video.
5:47 is that some ground resonance going on there?
im building an electric Rc AH6 littlebird helicopter but its not gonna have the sound effects features. my only question about this project is what battery supply would you recommend for this build? Could a 6cell battery work? and how much flying time would there be?
Nice video, Guys!! Keep up the good work!!
Wow Berea, sooner or later I'm going to meet someone closer to Lawrenceburg, KY that can help this old fixed wing flyer learn to fly heli's ! Great vid.
come on down to Berea and fly with us. Lexington has a great club but thats still aways from you.
That guy was the definition of chill
The only thing i can say about David:
LIKE A SIR !!! :D
With the new series of Magnum P.I., this helicopter is back!
you guys are so awesome I wish I could fly just like you
More Helis PLEASE!
I was worried about the chase cam heli getting a little to close
How do I get my Heli to huvver?
Great job on that heli Bill Awesome turbine sound ! I like it!!
Now you just need to set it up with the Gyro in Rate hold mode for the proper scale flying. Heading hold gyros are wrong for scale. It also makes turns smoother with a rate hold as the tail wind-vanes naturally
Awesome.. magnum pi.. omg I feel old.
Yes David should were that jacket for every episode. Wheres bixlers jacket?
U guys should come up here to alaska
One item that should be mentioned with any flybarless system..

Beautiful craft. I recognized the paint scheme immediately. I guess that dates me! :)
MyTechWebTV I’m 15 but my parents raised me right so I love shows like magnum pi, airwolf, night rider, and of course black sheep squadron
@@trentonnicholson4743 same bro
hey can you make a double prop in one quad
Is this available for purchase?
The speakers would be really cool if it was in the exhaust pipe (or whatever it is) on the back of the cockpit.
Which radio does he use, looks like a DX18 from the snippet I saw!
FliteTest
DX18

David your face just says it all. Nice video cool helicopter. David David David you make me smile.
Where do i buy one of these?
I love it when you put the Magnum PI helicopter theme music on the speakers. Register# N58243
This is a great Chanel because me and my dad fly roc planes we come here before we buy
Has David gone back to Sweden?
Its very stable and very big which is why i like big scale flight objects
David in his jacket!? What the...? :)))
Haha loving David's blazer!!
like the colors and the shape cool
nice suit david! is that a rocket pin?
This is Hughes 500D, the "E" model has a pointed nose :-)
Nice! What kind of aviator sunglasses is David wearing through these vids? I want a pair XD
It has the Magnum P.I livery!
cool! How much do you pay for a bird like this?
About $2,000.
is there a cg on a helicoper
Yes. The center of gravity is perpendicular to the main rotor shaft.
Who was flying the camera that was freekin wicked.
If I can find a good airfix md500 shell I'd love to fit it over an xk 100 lol
That thing is awesome!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful bird! Well done! Love the sounds too... gives me ideas. :)
Lol, everyone hates on the 3GX. I have one in my trex 800, 550 and 450. Never had any issues and have always been happy with them. I gotta laugh when someone says it's too complicated.
nice, looks like its near 1/10 scale.. I would really love to have one to pair my 1/10 trucks...
It's 1/8 scale
How much?this scale!
pls do a review on hobby king orange tx and rx series
Love the model of T.C's helicopter. But the landing skids are not right for a scale helicopter............they must be put much forward in the holders at the Hughes 500

Where's TC & Magnum??
This looks like the hughes loach that TC flew in magnum PI! !
Yeah!
Apparently, that was a standard paint job on all Hughes 500s
David would make a great Higgins!!!
More helis please! :-D
how can i choose a rc plane for 12 year old child?
The Champ! Durable and cheap.
Parkzone has a real nice little three channel ready to fly plane that flys super slow easy to control looks like little butter fly I can fly it indoors in my apartment great first starter plane called night vapor has little LED's you can fly it at night too.
David, something happened? Or did you just felt like wearing it?
Thanks for the video :-)

Great job, amazing, that heli flies rocksolid, th for the vid!
